Gravitational Instantons and Fluxes from M/F-theory on Calabi-Yau fourfolds
We compactify four-dimensional N=1 gauged supergravity theories on a circle
including fluxes for shift-symmetric scalars. Four-dimensional Taub-NUT
gravitational instantons universally correct the three-dimensional
superpotential in the absence of fluxes. In the presence of fluxes these
Taub-NUT instanton contributions are no longer gauge-invariant. Invariance can
be restored by gauge instantons on top of Taub-NUT instantons. We establish the
embedding of this scenario into M-theory. Circle fluxes and gaugings arise from
a restricted class of M-theory four-form fluxes on a resolved Calabi-Yau
fourfold. The M5-brane on the base of the elliptic fourfold dualizes into the
universal Taub-NUT instanton. In the presence of fluxes this M5-brane is
anomalous. We argue that anomaly free contributions arise from involved
M5-brane geometries dual to gauge-instantons on top of Taub-NUT instantons.
Adding a four-dimensional superpotential to the gravitational instanton
corrections leads to three-dimensional Anti-de Sitter vacua at stabilized
compactification radius. We comment on the possibility to uplift these M-theory
vacua, and to tunnel to four-dimensional F-theory vacua.Comment: 47 pages, 2 figure
Global Spinors and Orientable Five-Branes
Fermion fields on an M-theory five-brane carry a representation of the double
cover of the structure group of the normal bundle. It is shown that, on an
arbitrary oriented Lorentzian six-manifold, there is always an Sp(2) twist that
allows such spinors to be defined globally. The vanishing of the arising
potential obstructions does not depend on spin structure in the bulk, nor does
the six-manifold need to be spin or spin-C. Lifting the tangent bundle to such
a generalised spin bundle requires picking a generalised spin structure in
terms of certain elements in the integral and modulo-two cohomology of the
five-brane world-volume in degrees four and five, respectively.Comment: 18 pages, LaTeX; v2: version to appear in JHE
Ultrastable CO2 Laser Trapping of Lithium Fermions
We demonstrate an ultrastable CO2 laser trap that provides tight confinement
of neutral atoms with negligible optical scattering and minimal laser-noise-
induced heating. Using this method, fermionic 6Li atoms are stored in a 0.4 mK
deep well with a 1/e trap lifetime of 300 sec, consistent with a background
pressure of 10^(-11) Torr. To our knowledge, this is the longest storage time
ever achieved with an all-optical trap, comparable to the best reported

Charges of twisted branes: the exceptional cases
The charges of the twisted D-branes for the two exceptional cases (SO(8) with
the triality automorphism and E_6 with charge conjugation) are determined. To
this end the corresponding NIM-reps are expressed in terms of the fusion rules
of the invariant subalgebras. As expected the charge groups are found to agree
with those characterising the untwisted branes.Comment: 15 page
Generalised permutation branes
We propose a new class of non-factorising D-branes in the product group GxG
where the fluxes and metrics on the two factors do not necessarily coincide.
They generalise the maximally symmetric permutation branes which are known to
exist when the fluxes agree, but break the symmetry down to the diagonal
current algebra in the generic case. Evidence for the existence of these branes
comes from a Lagrangian description for the open string world-sheet and from
effective Dirac-Born-Infeld theory. We state the geometry, gauge fields and, in
the case of SU(2)xSU(2), tensions and partial results on the open string
spectrum. In the latter case the generalised permutation branes provide a
natural and complete explanation for the charges predicted by K-theory

D-branes on general N=1 backgrounds: superpotentials and D-terms
We study the dynamics governing space-time filling D-branes on Type II flux
backgrounds preserving four-dimensional N=1 supersymmetry. The four-dimensional
superpotentials and D-terms are derived. The analysis is kept on completely
general grounds thanks to the use of recently proposed generalized
calibrations, which also allow one to show the direct link of the
superpotentials and D-terms with BPS domain walls and cosmic strings
respectively. In particular, our D-brane setting reproduces the tension of
D-term strings found from purely four-dimensional analysis. The holomorphicity
of the superpotentials is also studied and a moment map associated to the
D-terms is proposed. Among different examples, we discuss an application to the
study of D7-branes on SU(3)-structure backgrounds, which reproduces and

Adopting Immunization Recommendations: A New Dissemination Model
Objective: This paper presents a new approach for understanding factors related to physician adoption of clinical guidelines, using children's vaccine recommendations as a case study. Methods: The model traces sequential steps, from awareness to agreement to adoption and, finally, adherence to the guideline. Movement through these stages can be catalyzed or retarded by many influences, grouped into two major categories: environmental characteristics of the physician's practice, and information characteristics of the guideline. Environmental characteristics include sociocultural factors, professional characteristics, and practice organization factors. Information characteristics include the guideline's relative advantage, complexity, and compatibility with existing guidelines and protocols, as well as mechanisms of guideline dissemination. Solitons in Seiberg-Witten Theory and D-branes in the Derived Category
We analyze the "geometric engineering" limit of a type II string on a
suitable Calabi-Yau threefold to obtain an N=2 pure SU(2) gauge theory. The
derived category picture together with Pi-stability of B-branes beautifully
reproduces the known spectrum of BPS solitons in this case in a very explicit
way. Much of the analysis is particularly easy since it can be reduced to

Correct quantum chemistry in a minimal basis from effective Hamiltonians
We describe how to create ab-initio effective Hamiltonians that qualitatively
describe correct chemistry even when used with a minimal basis. The
Hamiltonians are obtained by folding correlation down from a large parent basis
into a small, or minimal, target basis, using the machinery of canonical
transformations. We demonstrate the quality of these effective Hamiltonians to
correctly capture a wide range of excited states in water, nitrogen, and
ethylene, and to describe ground and excited state bond-breaking in nitrogen
and the chromium dimer, all in small or minimal basis sets
