    Skill-biased technological change and the business cycle

    Over the past two decades, technological progress in the United States has been biased towards skilled labor. What does this imply for business cycles? We construct a quarterly skill premium from the CPS and use it to identify skill-biased technology shocks in a VAR with long-run zero and sign restrictions. Hours fall in response to skill-biased technology shocks, indicating that part of the technology-induced fall in hours is due to a compositional shift in labor demand. Investment-specific technology shocks reduce the skill premium, indicating that capital and skill are not complementary in aggregate production

    Production of the dinoflagellate Amphidoma languida in a large scale photobioreactor and structure elucidation of its main metabolite AZA-39

    Shellfish contamination with azaspiracids (AZA) is a major and recurrent problem for the Irish shellfish industry. Amphidoma languida, a small thecate dinoflagellate of the family Amphidomataceae, is widely distributed in Irish coastal waters and is one of the identified source species of azaspiracids. Irish and North Sea strains of Am. languida have been found to produce as major metabolites AZA-38 and -39 whose structures have only been provisionally elucidated by mass spectrometry and their toxic potential is currently unknown. In order to provide pure AZA-38 and -39 for subsequent structural and toxicological analyses, we present the first successful large-scale culture of Am. languida. A 180 L in house prototype bioreactor was used for culture growth and harvesting in semi-continuous mode for two months. Two different runs of the photobiorector with different light and pH setting showed the highest toxin yield at higher light intensity and slightly higher pH. AZA-38 and -39 cell quota were measured throughout the complete growth cycle with AZA-39 cell quota increasing in proportion to AZA-38 at late stationary to senescence phase. Over two experiments a total of 700 L of culture was harvested yielding 0.45 mg of pure AZA-39. The structure of AZA-39 was elucidated through NMR data analyses, which led to a revision of the structure proposed previously by mass spectrometry. While the spirotetrahydrofuran/tetrahydrofuran of rings A and B has been confirmed by NMR for AZA-39, a methyl is still present in position C-14 and the carboxylic acid chain is different from the structure proposed initially

    Antiparasitic Bromotyrosine Derivatives from the Marine Sponge Verongula rigida

    Nine bromotyrosine-derived compounds were isolated from the Caribbean marine sponge Verongula rigida. Two of them, aeroplysinin-1 (1) and dihydroxyaerothionin (2), are known compounds for this species, and the other seven are unknown compounds for this species, namely: 3,5-dibromo-N,N,N-trimethyltyraminium (3), 3,5-dibromo-N,N,N, O-tetramethyltyraminium (4), purealidin R (5), 19-deoxyfistularin 3 (6), purealidin B (7), 11-hydroxyaerothionin (8) and fistularin-3 (9). Structural determination of the isolated compounds was performed using one- and two-dimensional NMR, MS and other spectroscopy data. All isolated compounds were screened for their in vitro activity against three parasitic protozoa: Leishmania panamensis, Plasmodium falciparum and Trypanosoma cruzi. Compounds 7 and 8 showed selective antiparasitic activity at 10 and 5 ÎŒM against Leishmania and Plasmodium parasites, respectively. Cytotoxicity of these compounds on a human promonocytic cell line was also assessed

    EXCEDE Technology Development III: First Vacuum Tests

    This paper is the third in the series on the technology development for the EXCEDE (EXoplanetary Circumstellar Environments and Disk Explorer) mission concept, which in 2011 was selected by NASA's Explorer program for technology development (Category III). EXCEDE is a 0.7m space telescope concept designed to achieve raw contrasts of 1e6 at an inner working angle of 1.2 l/D and 1e7 at 2 l/D and beyond. This will allow it to directly detect and spatially resolve low surface brightness circumstellar debris disks as well as image giant planets as close as in the habitable zones of their host stars. In addition to doing fundamental science on debris disks, EXCEDE will also serve as a technological and scientific precursor for any future exo-Earth imaging mission. EXCEDE uses a Starlight Suppression System (SSS) based on the PIAA coronagraph, enabling aggressive performance. We report on our continuing progress of developing the SSS for EXCEDE, and in particular (a) the reconfiguration of our system into a more flight-like layout, with an upstream deformable mirror and an inverse PIAA system, as well as a LOWFS, and (b) testing this system in a vacuum chamber, including IWA, contrast, and stability performance. The results achieved so far are 2.9e-7 contrast between 1.2-2.0 l/D and 9.7e-8 contrast between 2.0-6.0 l/D in monochromatic light; as well as 1.4e-6 between 2.0-6.0 l/D in a 10% band, all with a PIAA coronagraph operating at an inner working angle of 1.2 l/D. This constitutes better contrast than EXCEDE requirements (in those regions) in monochromatic light, and progress towards requirements in broadband light. Even though this technology development is primarily targeted towards EXCEDE, it is also germane to any exoplanet direct imaging space-based telescopes because of the many challenges common to different coronagraph architectures and mission requirements.Comment: 12 pages, 12 figures, to be published in proceedings of SPIE Astronomical Telescopes + Instrumentation (2014

    Importance of Blood Glucose Management Before 18F-FDG PET/CT in 322 Patients with Bacteremia of Unknown Origin

    We investigated the effects of blood glucose levels on the performance of 18F-FDG PET/CT for detecting an infection focus in patients with bacteremia. Methods: A total of 322 consecutive patients with bacteremia who underwent 18F-FDG PET/CT between 2010 and 2021 were included. Logistic regression analysis was performed to evaluate the association between finding a true-positive infection focus on 18FFDG PET/CT and blood glucose level, type of diabetes, and use of hypoglycemic medication. C-reactive protein, leukocyte count, duration of antibiotic treatment, and type of isolated bacteria were considered as well. Results: Blood glucose level (odds ratio, 0.76 per unit increase; P=,0.001) was significantly and independently associated with 18F-FDG PET/CT outcome. In patients with a blood glucose level between 3.0 and 7.9mmol/L (54-142mg/dL), the true-positive detection rate of 18F-FDG PET/CT varied between 61% and 65%, whereas in patients with a blood glucose level between 8.0 and 10.9mmol/L (144-196mg/dL), the true-positive detection rate decreased to 30%- 38%. In patients with a blood glucose level greater than 11.0mmol/L (200mg/dL), the true-positive detection rate was 17%. In addition to C-reactive protein (odds ratio, 1.004 per point increase; P = 0.009), no other variables were independently associated with 18F-FDG PET/CT outcome. Conclusion: In patients with moderate to severe hyperglycemia, 18F-FDG PET/CT was much less likely to identify the focus of infection than in normoglycemic patients. Although current guidelines recommend postponing 18F-FDG PET/CT only in cases of severe hyperglycemia with glucose levels greater than 11mmol/L (200mg/dL), a lower blood glucose threshold seems to be more appropriate in patients with bacteremia of unknown origin and other infectious diseases.</p

    Science yield estimate with the Wide-Field Infrared Survey Telescope coronagraph

    The coronagraph instrument (CGI) on the Wide-Field Infrared Survey Telescope will directly image and spectrally characterize planets and circumstellar disks around nearby stars. Here we estimate the expected science yield of the CGI for known radial-velocity (RV) planets and potential circumstellar disks. The science return is estimated for three types of coronagraphs: the hybrid Lyot and shaped pupil are the currently planned designs, and the phase-induced amplitude apodizing complex mask coronagraph is the backup design. We compare the potential performance of each type for imaging as well as spectroscopy. We find that the RV targets can be imaged in sufficient numbers to produce substantial advances in the science of nearby exoplanets. To illustrate the potential for circumstellar disk detections, we estimate the brightness of zodiacal-type disks, which could be detected simultaneously during RV planet observations

    Thermal emission from the Earth-sized exoplanet TRAPPIST-1 b using JWST

    The TRAPPIST-1 system is remarkable for its seven planets that are similar in size, mass, density, and stellar heating to the rocky planets Venus, Earth, and Mars in our own Solar System (Gillon et al. 2017). All TRAPPIST-1 planets have been observed with the transmission spectroscopy technique using the Hubble or Spitzer Space Telescopes, but no atmospheric features have been detected or strongly constrained (Ducrot et al. 2018; de Wit et al. 2018; Zhang et al. 2018; Garcia et al. 2022). TRAPPIST-1 b is the closest planet to the system's M dwarf star, and it receives 4 times as much irradiation as Earth receives from the Sun. This relatively large amount of stellar heating suggests that its thermal emission may be measurable. Here we present photometric secondary eclipse observations of the Earth-sized TRAPPIST-1 b exoplanet using the F1500W filter of the MIRI instrument on JWST. We detect the secondary eclipse in each of five separate observations with 8.7-sigma confidence when all data are combined. These measurements are most consistent with the re-radiation of the TRAPPIST-1 star's incident flux from only the dayside hemisphere of the planet. The most straightforward interpretation is that there is little or no planetary atmosphere redistributing radiation from the host star and also no detectable atmospheric absorption from carbon dioxide (CO2_2) or other species.Comment: Submitted to Natur
