Parity-violating DIS and the flavour dependence of the EMC effect
Isospin-dependent nuclear forces play a fundamental role in nuclear
structure. In relativistic models of nuclear structure constructed at the quark
level these isovector nuclear forces affect the u and d quarks differently,
leading to non-trivial flavour dependent modifications of the nuclear parton
distributions. We explore the effect of isospin dependent forces for
parity-violating deep inelastic scattering on nuclear targets and demonstrate
that the cross-sections for nuclei with N /= Z are sensitive to the flavour
dependence of the EMC effect. Indeed, for nuclei like lead and gold we find
that these flavour dependent effects are large.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure
Spin-dependent structure functions in nuclear matter and the polarized EMC effect
An excellent description of both spin-independent and spin-dependent quark
distributions and structure functions has been obtained with a modified
Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model, which is free of unphysical thresholds for nucleon
decay into quarks - hence incorporating an important aspect of confinement. We
utilize this model to investigate nuclear medium modifications to structure
functions and find that we are readily able to reproduce both nuclear matter
saturation and the experimental F^A_2N / F_2N ratio, that is, the EMC effect.
Applying this framework to determine g^A_1p, we find that the ratio g^A_1p /
g_1p differs significantly from 1, with the quenching caused by the nuclear
medium being about twice that of the spin-independent case. This represents an
exciting result, which if confirmed experimentally, will reveal much about the
quark structure of nuclear matter.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
On the genus Anchonus Schönherr in Florida (Coleoptera: Curculionidae)
Four species of Anchonus Schonherr occur in Florida: A. flol'idanus Schwarz, A. dul'yi Blatchley, A. blatchleyi Sleeper, and A. suillus (Fabricius), which is recorded from Florida and the continental United States for the first time. The species are distinguished in a key and illustrated. A lectotype is selected for A. floridanus
A Method for Establishing Outdoor Recreation Project Priorities in Alaska

in this research project.The objectives of this study are to define outdoor recreation benefits to
the public and to develop a priority ranking method for proposed outdoor
recreation projects. A careful analysis of the benefits which people derive
from outdoor recreation provides a frame of reference for evaluating a
recreational facility. A project should supply those benefits which are most
highly demanded by the public. Fifteen benefits of recreation are defined
and discussed. They are divided into two major categories; those which
accrue to recreational participants and those which accrue to

Renormalization of Bilinear Quark Operators for Overlap Fermions
We present non-perturbative renormalization constants of fermionic bilinears
on the lattice in the quenched approximation at beta=6.1 using an overlap
fermion action with hypercubic(HYP)-blocked links. We consider the effects of
the exact zero modes of the Dirac operator and find they are important in
calculating the renormalization constants of the scalar and pseudoscalar
density. The results are given in the RI' and MS bar schemes and compared to
the perturbative calculations.Comment: 14 pages, 13 figure
Unified chiral analysis of the vector meson spectrum from lattice QCD
The chiral extrapolation of the vector meson mass calculated in
partially-quenched lattice simulations is investigated. The leading one-loop
corrections to the vector meson mass are derived for partially-quenched QCD. A
large sample of lattice results from the CP-PACS Collaboration is analysed,
with explicit corrections for finite lattice spacing artifacts. To incorporate
the effect of the opening decay channel as the chiral limit is approached, the
extrapolation is studied using a necessary phenomenological extension of chiral
effective field theory. This chiral analysis also provides a quantitative
estimate of the leading finite volume corrections. It is found that the
discretisation, finite-volume and partial quenching effects can all be very
well described in this framework, producing an extrapolated value of M_\rho in
excellent agreement with experiment. This procedure is also compared with
extrapolations based on polynomial forms, where the results are much less
