    Is statistical learning trainable?

    Statistical learning (SL) is the ability to implicitly extract regularities in the environment, and likely supports various higher-order behaviors, from language to music and vision. While specific patterns experience are likely to influence SL outcomes, this ability is tacitly conceptualized as a fixed construct, and few studies to date have investigated how experience may shape statistical learning. We report one experiment that directly tested whether SL can be modulated by previous experience. We used a prepost treatment design allowing us to pinpoint what specific aspects of \u201cprevious experience\u201d matter for SL. The results show that performance on an artificial grammar learning task at post-test depends on whether the grammar to be learned at post-test matches the underlying grammar structures learned during treatment. Our study is the first to adopt a pre-post test design to directly modulate the effects of learning on learning itself

    Mars Science Laboratory Engineering Cameras

    NASA's Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) Rover, which launched to Mars in 2011, is equipped with a set of 12 engineering cameras. These cameras are build-to-print copies of the Mars Exploration Rover (MER) cameras, which were sent to Mars in 2003. The engineering cameras weigh less than 300 grams each and use less than 3 W of power. Images returned from the engineering cameras are used to navigate the rover on the Martian surface, deploy the rover robotic arm, and ingest samples into the rover sample processing system. The navigation cameras (Navcams) are mounted to a pan/tilt mast and have a 45-degree square field of view (FOV) with a pixel scale of 0.82 mrad/pixel. The hazard avoidance cameras (Haz - cams) are body-mounted to the rover chassis in the front and rear of the vehicle and have a 124-degree square FOV with a pixel scale of 2.1 mrad/pixel. All of the cameras utilize a frame-transfer CCD (charge-coupled device) with a 1024x1024 imaging region and red/near IR bandpass filters centered at 650 nm. The MSL engineering cameras are grouped into two sets of six: one set of cameras is connected to rover computer A and the other set is connected to rover computer B. The MSL rover carries 8 Hazcams and 4 Navcams

    Na região produtora de batata-doce do RS, onde destaca-se o município de Mariana Pimentel, significativa parcela dos agricultores familiares são dependentes da renda gerada pela batatadoce e pelo fumo. A disponibilidade de resíduos de batata-doce estimulou a realização de uma experiência de seu processamento e secagem em estufa de fumo com o objetivo de sua posterior utilização na composição de ração para aves coloniais. A diversificação do sistema, com a autonomia na produção do componente energético da ração, poderia permitir maior autonomia aos avicultores coloniais. O trabalho foi conduzido utilizando metodologia participativa e em parceria entre o "Conjunto Agrotécnico Visconde da Graça" - CAVG/UFPel, Secretaria de Agricultura de Mariana Pimentel-RS, Fepagro-RS (Taquari), Brastec Nutrição, Senar-RS e Embrapa Clima Temperado. Os resultados obtidos mostraram bom desempenho zootécnico quanto ao ganho de peso, onde as aves atingiram 2.650 gr. na 14ª semana, superiores ao peso padrão esperado (2.601 gr/ave).Resumos do VI CBA e II CLAA

    Modelling the atmospheric dispersion of radiotracers in small-scale, controlled detonations: validation of dispersion models using field test data

    A series of modelling exercises, based on field tests conducted in the Czech Republic, were carried out by the ‘Urban’ Working Groups as part of the International Atomic Energy Agency’s Environmental Modelling for Radiation Safety II, Modelling and Data for Radiological Impact Assessment (MODARIA) I and MODARIA II international data compilation and model validation programmes. In the first two of these programmes, data from a series of field tests involving dispersion of a radiotracer, 99mTc, from small-scale, controlled detonations were used in a comparison of model predictions with field measurements of deposition. In the third programme, data from a similar field test, involving dispersion of 140La instead of 99mTc, were used. Use of longer-lived 140La as a radiotracer allowed a greater number of measurements to be made over a greater distance from the dispersion point and in more directions than was possible for the earlier tests involving shorter-lived 99mTc. The modelling exercises included both intercomparison of model predictions from several participants and comparison of model predictions with the measured data. Several models (HotSpot, LASAIR, ADDAM/CSA-ERM, plus some research models) were used in the comparisons, which demonstrated the challenges of modelling dispersion of radionuclides from detonations and the need for appropriate meteorological measurements
