Role of dynamic Jahn-Teller distortions in Na2C60 and Na2CsC60 studied by NMR

Through 13C NMR spin lattice relaxation (T1) measurements in cubic Na2C60, we detect a gap in its electronic excitations, similar to that observed in tetragonal A4C60. This establishes that Jahn-Teller distortions (JTD) and strong electronic correlations must be considered to understand the behaviour of even electron systems, regardless of the structure. Furthermore, in metallic Na2CsC60, a similar contribution to T1 is also detected for 13C and 133Cs NMR, implying the occurence of excitations typical of JT distorted C60^{2-} (or equivalently C60^{4-}). This supports the idea that dynamic JTD can induce attractive electronic interactions in odd electron systems.Comment: 3 figure

DVFS is generally useful to provide a compromise between computing demands and power consumption, especially in the areas of resource-constrained computing systems. Many modern processors support some form of DVFS. In this article we focus on the development of an execution framework that provides light-weight DVFS support for reactive stream-processing systems (RSPS). RSPS are a common form of embedded control systems, operating in direct response to inputs from their environment. At the execution framework we focus on support for many-core scheduling for parallel execution of concurrent programs. We provide a DVFS strategy for RSPS that is simple and lightweight, to be used for dynamic adaptation of the power consumption at runtime. The simplicity of the DVFS strategy became possible by sole focus on the application domain of RSPS. The presented DVFS strategy does not require specific assumptions about the message arrival rate or the underlying scheduling method. While DVFS is a very active field, in contrast to most existing research, our approach works also for platforms like many-core processors, where the power settings typically cannot be controlled individually for each computational unit. We also support dynamic scheduling with variable workload. While many research results are provided with simulators, in our approach we present a parallel execution framework with experiments conducted on real hardware, using the SCC many-core processor. The results of our experimental evaluation confirm that our simple DVFS strategy provides potential for significant energy saving on RSPS.Peer reviewe

Deformation of aluminum in situ SEM and full field measurements by digital image correlation: evidence of concomitant crystal slip and grain boundary sliding

Mechanical testing in situ scanning electron microscopy (SEM) has become a standard technique for multiscale micromechanical investigation of polycrystalline materials. Direct observation of developing strain heterogeneities allows identification of the active mechanisms and quantification of their respective contributions to the overall strain. We developed a novel experimental setup for thermomechanical testing in situ SEM, especially suited to full strain field measurements. These are based on digital image correlation (DIC), from the sample scale to the scales of the aggregate and the single grain. We present results obtained during simple compression, at controlled displacement rates and at temperatures up to 400°C, of nearly pure polycrystalline aluminum exhibiting randomly oriented coarse grains (ca. 300 m in size). Electron microlithography was applied to produce specific surface marking patterns appropriate for the different scales of interest. Full surface strain fields were obtained by digital image correlation (DIC) analysis. The localization patterns evidenced dominant crystal slip plasticity, but also substantial simultaneous and continuous activity of grain boundary sliding (GBS), the contribution of which increased with temperature. We therefore advocate that experiments such as these here presented are necessary to go beyond a description in terms of deformation mechanism maps, which attribute deformation to a single mechanism
