This study compares the features of poetry works of Victor Hugo from the Romantic Movement to those of Alfred Lord Tennyson from the Victorian Age of literature who lived in cutting age of the two periods of literature. These two ages experienced great expansion of industrial and agricultural revolutions, expansion of British as a super power nation with many colonies and the French revolution which to a great extent influenced the writings of these authors. Romanticism style of portraying themes of imagination, natural beauty and individual emotions over reasoning and sense of intellect influenced the poets of the age of Victorian literature though they still addressed the problems of the Victorian age. Both poets composed short and long poems, used description and sentimental styles, used nature metaphorically to create imagery and describe the emotions of appreciating beauty of the nature and reflecting peoples struggle in different situations of life.Key words: Literature of the Romantic period, literature of the Victorian Age, Victor Hugo,Alfred Tennyson

Effects of Cognitive Style on Food Perception and Eating Behavior

    Get PDF
Within the fields of psychology, notably cultural psychology, the analytic-holistic cognitive style theory has been introduced, developed, fine-tuned, and validated across a wide range of situations, stimuli, and populations. This research, combined with recent applications of the analytic-holistic theory, suggests that the differences in analytic or holistic tendencies of individuals in food, sensory, and consumer tests can impact food perception and associated behaviors. This dissertation aimed to investigate the impact of analytic-holistic cognitive styles of consumers in food situations. The first objective to accomplish this goal was to conduct exploratory research to identify if and where the analytic-holistic theory may be applicable across areas of the consumer food experience. The second objective was then to replicate one of the paramount differences of analytic and holistic groups by investigating the effect of the eating environment and how analytic-holistic cognitive styles may mediate this effect. The third objective was to identify where and how analytic and holistic groups differ in their responses to standard sensory evaluation tasks. Finally, the fourth objective was to develop and validate an analytic-holistic measurement tool that could accurately separate participants based on their analytic-holistic tendencies in food-related situations. Through completing these objectives, it was first found and continuously supported that analytic and holistic groups have significantly different perceptions of and reactions to food stimuli and food experiences. In addition, the completed studies also provide evidence that the two cognitive style groups subsequently have significantly different response data in sensory evaluation tasks, while also showing indications the current methodology to separate consumers based on analytic-holistic tendencies is not the most accurate within food-related applications. Finally, the completed studies were able to show that a food-related analytic-holistic measurement tool could be adequately developed and had superior performance to the existing assessment tool in validation testing. Combining the studies within this dissertation offers valuable insights to food science, sensory, and consumer researchers across academia and industry by showing the necessity of accounting for analytic-holistic consumer differences in their respective fields. Moreover, this dissertation provides these researchers a new, more accurate measurement tool to allow them to easily and accurately separate analytic and holistic groups within their own research. To conclude, this dissertation offers ample evidence for the importance of accounting for analytic-holistic differences in food-related consumer testing through a variety of studies showing significant differences between analytic and holistic consumer groups in terms of food perception and food-related behavior

Training programmes are increasingly drawing attention to the specific skills and knowledge that employees demand for performance. This is formulated on the basis of the challenges that the public sector faces with training programmes that are relevant to employee performance. It is from this ground that the paper assessed the training programmes for employee performance in Tanzania, taking DUWASA as a case. It determined the types of training programmes offered by DUWASA for employee performance and ascertained the link between training programmes and employee performance. A case study design was applied under the mixed approach, which offered a combination of qualitative and quantitative approaches, to allow the provision of complete knowledge of the research problem in either one of the approaches. The findings revealed that DUWASA provides different types of training programmes for employees' performance. It facilitates employee performance in terms of knowledge and skills. The training programmes for employee performance have improvement measures to the organization’s advantage. Likewise, the findings noted the existence of a strong link or relationship between training and employee performance. In most instances, employees received training for the expectation of performance. The study recommends that DUWASA needs to develop motivational means for employee training programmes. The Ministry of Water needs to provide sufficient funds for DUWASA to offer efficient and effective training programmes for employee performance. In this way, the position of new knowledge and skills acquisition is to improve employees’ performance in sensitive organizations such as DUWASA with profound services like water. This study analyses the perspectives of teachers on English as a language of learning and teaching in the context of government recommendations that Shona and Ndebele be used alongside English as languages of learning and teaching in Zimbabwean secondary schools. Through a questionnaire survey, open interviews and classroom observation, it was found that the teachers regard English as a language of learning and teaching in a positive way though they are aware of the difficulties associated with its use. There was a high consensus on the desirability of English among teachers as informants with various attributes obtained attitude, pedagogical beliefs and perceived difficulties scores that were, in the main, not statistically significant. It also emerged that government recommendations for the use of endoglossic languages as languages of learning and teaching (LoLT) have not been complemented by concrete measures and that the subsequent efforts to change the language-in-education policy have so far seemed insincere.Linguistics and Modern LanguagesM.A. (With specialisation in Applied Linguistics
