Using ‘E-portfolio’ on Google Sites to help Students develop their autonomy in the credit-based training system

The application of ‘E-portfolio’ on Google Sites as a tool for continuous assessment of students’learning process to help them develop their autonomy is the main aim of the authors. 101 students (in 25 groups) took part in the testing and assessment method in the summer term of the academic year 2015-2016. First, students were asked to create their group web, ‘E-portfolio’ on Google Sites. Then they had to post each of their products (an English test) after attending a lecture on each topic. By the end of the course, they finished five tests and posted them in their ‘E- portfolio’. The questionnaire (including 30 items) was used to investigate the benefits of ‘E-portfolio’, and students’ independence of learning. The analysis of the questionnaire showed that students obtained a lot of benefits such as improving some personal qualities of an English teacher, deepening professional knowledge and developing their ability to design English tests. Especially, students highly evaluated their responsibility and motivation during the time they worked with their ‘E-portfolio’. The findings from two lecturers’ evaluations indicate that students were very successful in constructing their own tests of English although their ability to create ‘E-portfolio’ was not high. These authors strongly recommend the use of ‘E- portfolio’ as an assessment tool in the coming years, and the lecturer should find some solutions to help students to improve their self-confidence when studying independently

The Survey of Teaching, Testing and Assessment Methods Employed by Teachers of English (Grade 10) in Four Senior High Schools in Ho Chi Minh City

The survey research reported in this article examines teaching, testing and assessment methods applied in senior high schools in Ho Chi Minh City. 38 teachers of English (Grade 10) from four schools participated in this survey. The results of the survey revealed that most of these teachers did not apply the Communicative Approach to language teaching recommended by the Ministry of Education and Training and the textbook (English 10) writers. Their teaching techniques are also in line with their testing techniques because their tests only included grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation and reading items which cannot measure students’ communicative competence. Besides, the contrastive analysis of the recommended teaching approach, testing and assessment methods for senior high schoolers and the contents of major subjects in the curriculum of students majoring in English language teaching; and the results of the survey prove that what students have learned at university is appropriate for teaching English grade 10 in senior high schools. Some recommendations for further research and implications of the findings can be found at the end of this article

EVALUATION ON AGRONOMICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF F1 HYBRID TOMATO LINES IN SPRING-SUMMER SEASON 2015 IN THUA THIEN HUE

The four F1 hybrid tomato lines (CT2011, CW2011, TS2011, and CLN2011) and two commercial F1 hybrid tomato cultivars used as Control check (TN52 and TN561) were used in this study. The experiment was laid out in RCBD with three replications in spring-summer season 2015. Data was recorded on five plants for each replication. The results indicated that all of F1 tomato hybrid lines grew well under Thua Thien Hue condition. CT2011 had highest plant height and following was TS2011 and CLN2011. CT2011 is a cherry type and obtained highest percentage of fruit setting (82.87%) and highest of Brix (4.97). This line also had high yield (70.91 tons/ha). TN52 had highest yield (80.69 tons/ha) among the processing tomato lines, and TN561 had biggest fruit (90.1 g). All of F1 hybrid tomato lines had high resistant level to late blight and bacterial wilt diseases

Evaluation of Agronomic Traits of Sponge Gourd (Luffa cylindrica) Inbred Lines Under Plastic House in Thua Thien Hue

In order to establish the pure line of sponge gourd containing aroma feature, we selected the desirable inbred lines by using a self-pollinating method. The present study was investigated to estimate the morphological traits and fruit quality of 6 sponge gourd inbred lines which generated at 4th generation of an aroma Luffa accession B29 under plastic house conditions. The experiment was conducted in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications, from May to November in 2016. Five plants per replication were examined. The results indicated that all inbred lines could grow well under plastic house conditions. The inbred lines had the same stem and leaf traits; whereas fruit shape, skin color and fruit veins color were observed differently among inbred lines. The aromatic trait was retained in all inbred lines either before or after cooking. The high yield was found in lines BC1 and BC2 by 10.1 tons/ha and 10.7 tons/ha, respectively. These inbred lines should be examined in open field condition to confirm the presence of aromatic trait and yield potential before completion of the procedures for recognition of new Luffa varieties.
