The Survey of Teaching, Testing and Assessment Methods Employed by Teachers of English (Grade 10) in Four Senior High Schools in Ho Chi Minh City

Abstract

The survey research reported in this article examines teaching, testing and assessment methods applied in senior high schools in Ho Chi Minh City. 38 teachers of English (Grade 10) from four schools participated in this survey. The results of the survey revealed that most of these teachers did not apply the Communicative Approach to language teaching recommended by the Ministry of Education and Training and the textbook (English 10) writers. Their teaching techniques are also in line with their testing techniques because their tests only included grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation and reading items which cannot measure students’ communicative competence. Besides, the contrastive analysis of the recommended teaching approach, testing and assessment methods for senior high schoolers and the contents of major subjects in the curriculum of students majoring in English language teaching; and the results of the survey prove that what students have learned at university is appropriate for teaching English grade 10 in senior high schools. Some recommendations for further research and implications of the findings can be found at the end of this article
