Full-analytic frequency domain gravitational wave forms from eccentric compact binaries to second post-Newtonian accuracy
Full-analytic gravitational wave forms for inspiralling eccentric compact binaries of arbitary mass ratio have been provided in the frequency domain for the case of vanishing spins. Tail terms are not considered. In the given prescription, the semi-analytical property of recent descriptions, which demand inverting the higher order Kepler equation numerically, but keeping all other computations analytic is avoided
Local Current Distribution and "Hot Spots" in the Integer Quantum Hall Regime
In a recent experiment, the local current distribution of a two-dimensional
electron gas in the quantum Hall regime was probed by measuring the variation
of the conductance due to local gating. The main experimental finding was the
existence of "hot spots", i.e. regions with high degree of sensitivity to local
gating, whose density increases as one approaches the quantum Hall transition.
However, the direct connection between these "hot spots" and regions of high
current flow is not clear. Here, based on a recent model for the quantum Hall
transition consisting of a mixture of perfect and quantum links, the relation
between the "hot spots" and the current distribution in the sample has been
investigated. The model reproduces the observed dependence of the number and
sizes of "hot spots" on the filling factor. It is further demonstrated that
these "hot spots" are not located in regions where most of the current flows,
but rather, in places where the currents flow both when injected from the left
or from the right. A quantitative measure, the harmonic mean of these currents
is introduced and correlates very well with the "hot spots" positions
Aligned Spins: Orbital Elements, Decaying Orbits, and Last Stable Circular Orbit to high post-Newtonian Orders
In this article the quasi-Keplerian parameterisation for the case that spins
and orbital angular momentum in a compact binary system are aligned or
anti-aligned with the orbital angular momentum vector is extended to 3PN
point-mass, next-to-next-to-leading order spin-orbit, next-to-next-to-leading
order spin(1)-spin(2), and next-to-leading order spin-squared dynamics in the
conservative regime. In a further step, we use the expressions for the
radiative multipole moments with spin to leading order linear and quadratic in
both spins to compute radiation losses of the orbital binding energy and
angular momentum. Orbital averaged expressions for the decay of energy and
eccentricity are provided. An expression for the last stable circular orbit is
given in terms of the angular velocity type variable .Comment: 30 pages, 2 figures, v2: update to match published versio
Full-analytic frequency-domain 1pN-accurate gravitational wave forms from eccentric compact binaries
The article provides ready-to-use 1pN-accurate frequency-domain gravitational
wave forms for eccentric nonspinning compact binaries of arbitrary mass ratio
including the first post-Newtonian (1pN) point particle corrections to the
far-zone gravitational wave amplitude, given in terms of tensor spherical
harmonics. The averaged equations for the decay of the eccentricity and growth
of radial frequency due to radiation reaction are used to provide stationary
phase approximations to the frequency-domain wave forms.Comment: 28 pages, submitted to PR
Cooperative Cluster Formation, DNA Bending and Base-Flipping by O\u3csup\u3e6\u3c/sup\u3e-Alkylguanine-DNA Alkyltransferase
O6-Alkylguanine-DNA alkyltransferase (AGT) repairs mutagenic O6-alkylguanine and O4-alkylthymine adducts in DNA, protecting the genome and also contributing to the resistance of tumors to chemotherapeutic alkylating agents. AGT binds DNA cooperatively, and cooperative interactions are likely to be important in lesion search and repair. We examined morphologies of complexes on long, unmodified DNAs, using analytical ultracentrifugation and atomic force microscopy. AGT formed clusters of ≤11 proteins. Longer clusters, predicted by the McGhee–von Hippel model, were not seen even at high [protein]. Interestingly, torsional stress due to DNA unwinding has the potential to limit cluster size to the observed range. DNA at cluster sites showed bend angles (∼0, ∼30 and ∼60°) that are consistent with models in which each protein induces a bend of ∼30°. Distributions of complexes along the DNA are incompatible with sequence specificity but suggest modest preference for DNA ends. These properties tell us about environments in which AGT may function. Small cooperative clusters and the ability to accommodate a range of DNA bends allow function where DNA topology is constrained, such as near DNA-replication complexes. The low sequence specificity allows efficient and unbiased lesion search across the entire genome
Investigating the relationship between material properties and laser-induced damage threshold of dielectric optical coatings at 1064 nm
The Laser Induced Damage Threshold (LIDT) and material properties of various multi-layer amorphous dielectric
optical coatings, including Nb2O5, Ta2O5, SiO2, TiO2, ZrO2, AlN, SiN, LiF and ZnSe, have been studied. The coatings
were produced by ion assisted electron beam and thermal evaporation; and RF and DC magnetron sputtering at Helia
Photonics Ltd, Livingston, UK. The coatings were characterized by optical absorption measurements at 1064 nm by
Photothermal Common-path Interferometry (PCI). Surface roughness and damage pits were analyzed using atomic force
microscopy. LIDT measurements were carried out at 1064 nm, with a pulse duration of 9.6 ns and repetition rate of 100
Hz, in both 1000-on-1 and 1-on-1 regimes. The relationship between optical absorption, LIDT and post-deposition heattreatment
is discussed, along with analysis of the surface morphology of the LIDT damage sites showing both coating
and substrate failure
Local atomic structure and discommensurations in the charge density wave of CeTe3
The local structure of CeTe3 in the incommensurate charge density wave
(IC-CDW) state has been obtained using atomic pair distribution function (PDF)
analysis of x-ray diffraction data. Local atomic distortions in the Te-nets due
to the CDW are larger than observed crystallographically, resulting in distinct
short and long Te-Te bonds. Observation of different distortion amplitudes in
the local and average structures are explained by the discommensurated nature
of the CDW since the PDF is sensitive to the local displacements within the
commensurate regions whereas the crystallographic result averages over many
discommensurated domains. The result is supported by STM data. This is the
first quantitative local structural study within the commensurate domains in an
IC-CDW system.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Imaging of Low Compressibility Strips in the Quantum Hall Liquid
Using Subsurface Charge Accumulation scanning microscopy we image strips of
low compressibility corresponding to several integer Quantum Hall filling
factors. We study in detail the strips at Landau level filling factors
2 and 4. The observed strips appear significantly wider than predicted by
theory. We present a model accounting for the discrepancy by considering a
disorder-induced nonzero density of states in the cyclotron gap.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure
