    Diagnosis and Management of Exit Site Infection in Peritoneal Dialysis Patients

    Exit site infection (ESI) is an important clinical problem in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients and is a significant cause of peritonitis and catheter loss. While most ESIs are caused by skin commensals, rising incidence of atypical and resilient organisms such as mycobacteria, Pseudomonas and Burkholderia species has been observed. The diagnosis and management of these emerging pathogen remain difficult and poorly defined. This chapter highlights the evaluation and management of ESI in PD patients. The clinical features, microbiology, and ultrasonographic findings are discussed. The general and specific management of ESI due to different organisms will also be elaborated. ESI is usually a clinical diagnosis, but the use of bedside ultrasound can help assess for any collection around the cuff and tunnel tract involvement. Topical prophylaxis remains an effective way to prevent ESI. While the majority ESIs are related to skin flora and can be managed successfully by topical or systemic antimicrobials, clinicians should be alert to the emergence of resistant and atypical microorganisms. Surgical treatment should be reserved for ESI refractory to medical treatment or those with associated peritonitis

    This paper examines the impact of the convergence of Hong Kong Accounting Standard 40 (HKAS 40) with the International Financial Reporting Standard (IFRS) on the stock prices of firms in the property industry.     Population genomic analyses of protected incense trees Aquilaria sinensis reveal the existence of genetically distinct subpopulations

    The incense tree Aquilaria sinensis (Thymelaeaceae) can produce agarwood with commercial values and is now under threat from illegal exploitation in Hong Kong, impairing the local population and biodiversity. Together with other species of Aquilaria, it is listed in the CITES Appendix II, which strictly regulates its international trade. To understand the population structure of A. sinensis and to make relevant conservation measures, we have sequenced 346 individuals collected in Hong Kong and southern mainland China. Population genomic analyses including principal component analysis, neighbor-joining tree construction, ADMIXTURE, and hierarchical pairwise-FST analyses suggested that genetically distinct populations are contained in certain areas. Genomic scan analyses further detected single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) outliers related to plant defense, including the CYP71BE gene cluster. In addition to the population analyses, we have developed a modified hexadecyltrimethyl-ammonium bromide (CTAB) DNA extraction protocol for obtaining DNA from agarwood samples in this study, and resequencing of DNA extracted from two agarwood samples using this method allows us to successfully map to the sample corresponding localities in the phylogenetic tree. To sum up, this study suggested that there is a genetically distinct subpopulation of incense tree in Hong Kong that would require special conservation measures and established a foundation for future conservation measures

    Data exists everywhere in a campus, from those housed in the enterprise system to information located in a departmental officer’s drawers. Too often it is difficult or impossible to find data when needed the most. And, at times, similar data must be collected and organized over and over again to facilitate different operational needs at different times. Worse yet, we run the risk of not making data available to people who could benefit most from access. With the establishment of a new Institution Research office, coupled with the library’s information organization know-how and IT’s expertise managing data and access to data, we created an information gateway where core data, statistics, campus wide surveys and KPIs reports are organized and readily available to all departments, providing easy and efficient data access to facilitate university operations

    Prevalence and significance of hepatitis GB virus-C/hepatitis G virus viremia in a large cohort of patients with chronic hepatitis B infection, with chronic hepatitis C infection, and on renal replacement therapy in Hong Kong

    A total of 455 patients were recruited to study the prevalence of hepatitis GB virus-C/hepatitis G virus viremia in Hong Kong. There was no significant increase in the prevalence of hepatitis GB virus-C viremia in asymptomatic hepatitis B virus- and hepatitis C virus-infected patients compared to that of controls (1.56% and 7.14%, respectively, vs 3.85%, both P = NS). Renal patients as a whole had a significantly higher prevalence of hepatitis GB virus-C viremia compared to that of controls (13.95% vs 3.85%, P = 0.0271). The duration of the replacement therapy, especially for patients with peritoneal dialysis was associated with a higher chance of hepatitis GB virus-C viremia. Among renal patients, renal transplanted patients had the highest prevalence of hepatitis GB virus-C viraemia (19.1%) probably because of a higher susceptibility as a result of immunosuppression. However, hepatitis GB virus-C viraemia did not cause liver biochemistry derangement in renal transplanted patients.link_to_subscribed_fulltex
