Self-consistent Skyrme QRPA for use in axially-symmetric nuclei of arbitrary mass

    Get PDF
We describe a new implementation of the quasiparticle random phase approximation (QRPA) in axially-symmetric deformed nuclei with Skyrme and volume-pairing energy-density functionals. After using a variety of tests to demonstrate the accuracy of the code in ^{24,26}Mg and ^{16}O, we report the first fully self-consistent application of the Skyrme QRPA to a heavy deformed nucleus, calculating strength distributions for several K^pi in ^{172}Yb. We present energy-weighted sums, properties of gamma-vibrational and low-energy K^pi=0^+ states, and the complete isovector E1 strength function. The QRPA calculation reproduces the properties of the low-lying 2^+ states as well or better than it typically does in spherical nuclei.Comment: 5 pages, 6 figure

An Electronic Model for CoO2CoO_2 layer based systems: Chiral RVB metal and Superconductivity

    Get PDF
Takada et al. have reported superconductivity in layered Na__x CoO_2.yH_2O (Tc≈5KT_c \approx5 K) and more recently Wen et al. in AxCoO2+δA_xCoO_{2+\delta} (A=Na,KA = Na,K)(\tc≈ 31K\approx~31 K). We model a reference neutral \cob layer as an orbitally non-degenerate spin-\half antiferromagnetic Mott insulator on a triangular lattice and Na__x CoO_2.yH_2O and AxCoO2+δA_xCoO_{2+\delta} as electron doped Mott insulators described by a t-J model. It is suggested that at optimal doping chiral spin fluctuations enhanced by the dopant dynamics leads to a d-wave superconducting state. A chiral RVB metal, a PT violating state with condensed RVB gauge fields, with a possible weak ferromagnetism and low temperature p-wave superconductivity are also suggested at higher dopings.Comment: 4 pages of LaTex file, 6 figures in eps files. Impurity-induced transition and impurity-enhanced thermopower in the thermoelectric oxide NaCo_{2-x}Cu_x$O_4

Various physical quantities are measured and analysed for the Cu-substituted thermoelectric oxide NaCo_{2-x}Cu_xO_4. As was previously known, the substituted Cu enhances the thermoelectric power, while it does not increase the resistivity significantly. The susceptibility and the electron specific-heat are substantially decreased with increasing x, which implies that the substituted Cu decreases the effective-mass enhancement. Through a quantitative comparison with the heavy fermion compounds and the valence fluctuation systems, we have found that the Cu substitution effectively increases the coupling between the conduction electron and the magnetic fluctuation. The Cu substitution induces a phase transition at 22 K that is very similar to a spin-density-wave transition.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev.

Ferromagnetism and large negative magnetoresistance in Pb doped Bi-Sr-Co-O misfit-layer compound

Ferromagnetism and accompanying large negative magnetoresistance in Pb-substituted Bi-Sr-Co-O misfit-layer compound are investigated in detail. Recent structural analysis of (Bi,Pb)2{}_2Sr3{}_{3}Co2{}_2O9{}_9, which has been believed to be a Co analogue of Bi2{}_2Sr2{}_2CaCu2{}_2O8+δ{}_{8+\delta}, revealed that it has a more complex structure including a CoO2{}_2 hexagonal layer [T. Yamamoto {\it et al.}, Jpn. J. Appl. Phys. {\bf 39} (2000) L747]. Pb substitution for Bi not only introduces holes into the conducting CoO2{}_2 layers but also creates a certain amount of localized spins. Ferromagnetic transition appears at TT = 3.2 K with small spontaneous magnetization along the cc axis, and around the transition temperature large and anisotropic negative magnetoresistance was observed. This compound is the first example which shows ferromagnetic long-range order in a two-dimensional metallic hexagnonal CoO2{}_2 layer.Comment: 8 pages including eps figures. To be published in J. Thermal and Electrical Properties of gamma-NaxCoO2 (0.70 < x < 0.78)

We have performed specific heat and electric resistivity measurements of Nax_{x}CoO2_{2} (x=0.70x=0.70-0.78). Two anomalies have been observed in the specific heat data for x=0.78x=0.78, corresponding to magnetic transitions at Tc=22T_{c}=22 K and Tk≃9T_{k}\simeq 9 K reported previously. In the electrical resistivity, a steep decrease at TcT_{c} and a bending-like variation at TbT_{b}(=120K for x=0.78x=0.78) have been observed. Moreover, we have investigated the xx-dependence of these parameters in detail. The physical properties of this system are very sensitive to xx, and the inconsistent results of previous reports can be explained by a small difference in xx. Furthermore, for a higher xx value, a phase separation into Na-rich and Na-poor domains occurs as we previously proposed, while for a lower xx value, from characteristic behaviors of the specific heat and the electrical resistivity at the low-temperature region, the system is expected to be in the vicinity of the magnetic instability which virtually exists below x=0.70x=0.70.Comment: 4 pages (3 figures included) and an extra figure (gif), to be published in J. Dielectric responses of the layered cobalt oxysulfide Sr_2Cu_2CoO_2S_2 with CoO_2 square-planes

We have studied the dielectric responses of the layered cobalt oxysulfide Sr2_2Cu2_2CoO2_2S2_2 with the CoO2_2 square-planes. With decreasing temperature below the N\'eel temperature, the resistivity increases like a semiconductor, and the thermopower decreases like a metal. The dielectric constant is highly dependent on temperature, and the dielectric relaxation is systematically changed with temperature, which is strongly correlated to the magnetic states. These behaviors suggest that carriers distributed homogeneously in the paramagnetic state at high temperatures are expelled from the antiferromagnetically ordered spin domain below the N\'eel temperature.Comment: 3 pages, 4 eps figures, to be published in J. Optical Properties and Correlation Effects in NaxCoO2

We have calculated the optical spectra of Nax_{x}CoO2_2 for xx=0.3, 0.5, and 0.7 within the LDA. We compare our results to available experimental data and show that the important features and trends are reproduced well, but there is a nearly uniform shift of peak positions and poor agreement in intensities. We show, through application of a simple model, that these differences can be attributed to overhybridization between Co and O orbitals and spin fluctuations which renormalize the bandwidth. Applying the LDA+U procedure shifts the optical peaks further from their experimental locations, indicating that this method of incorporating correlation effects is ill-suited for the case NaxCoO2

Transport properties of the layered Rh oxide K_0.49RhO_2

We report measurements and analyses of resistivity, thermopower and Hall coefficient of single-crystalline samples of the layered Rh oxide K_0.49RhO_2. The resistivity is proportional to the square of temperature up to 300 K, and the thermopower is proportional to temperature up to 140 K. The Hall coefficient increases linearly with temperature above 100 K, which is ascribed to the triangular network of Rh in this compound. The different transport properties between Na_xCoO_2 and K_0.49RhO_2 are discussed on the basis of the different band width between Co and Rh evaluated from the magnetotransport.Comment: 3 figures, submitted to PR
