Uniform order phase and phase diagram of scalar field theory on fuzzy CPn\mathbb C P^n

We study the phase structure of the scalar field theory on fuzzy CPn\mathbb C P^n in the large NN limit. Considering the theory as a hermitian matrix model we compute the perturbative expansion of the kinetic term effective action under the assumption of distributions being close to the semicircle. We show that this model admits also a uniform order phase, corresponding to the asymmetric one-cut distribution, and we find the phase boundary. We compute a non-perturbative approximation to the effective action which enables us to identify the disorder and the non-uniform order phases and the phase transition between them. We locate the triple point of the theory and find an agreement with previous numerical studies for the case of the fuzzy sphere.Comment: 22 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables; v2 - typos corrected, version published in JHE

The Isospin Asymmetry in Anomalous Fluid Dynamics

The dynamics of fluids in which the constituent particles carry nonabelian charges can be described succinctly in terms of group-valued variables via a generalization of the co-adjoint orbit action for particles. This formalism, which is particularly suitable for incorporating anomalies, has previously been used for the chiral magnetic and chiral vorticity effects. Here we consider the similar effect for the isospin which corresponds to an angular asymmetry for neutral pions.Comment: 12 page

On quarkonium masses in 3D non-commutative space

We modify the calculation of quarkonium masses using the radial WKB and Pekeris-type approximations for the case of three-dimensional, rotationally invariant non-commutative space. We obtain corrections to the charmonium (ccˉ\text{c}\bar{\text{c}}), bottomonium (bbˉ\text{b}\bar{\text{b}}) and bottom-charmed meson (cbˉ\text{c}\bar{\text{b}}) masses due to the discrete short distance structure of the space introduced by the space non-commutativity. For the fundamental length at the Planck scale we obtain relative correction at the order of 103910^{-39}, and taking into account the current experimental data, we obtain the upper bound 1018 m{\sim 10^{-18}\textrm{ m}} for the fundamental length scale of space

Russian Language Translation in the U.S. Intelligence Community

This thesis discusses the role of Russian language translators in the U.S. intelligence community. Although the intelligence community recognizes that translations are indispensable to the analysis of foreign nations' actions and intentions, translators still lack the language and cross-cultural training necessary to turn out accurate translations. They are products of U.S. culture, which does not strongly promote foreign language and area studies. Translators are also limited by the absence of military coursework taken in their formal language training as well as a lack of cultural understanding of foreign nations. Poor and inaccurate translations are a result of the above deficiencies. Because analysts are also prone to the same linguistic deficiencies, they cannot always rectify the resulting errors, which could have serious repercussions on final policy decisions. Once the intelligence community recognizes the problems, it can provide in-house training and tools such as annotated glossaries, to help the translators improve on the final product.Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited.Civilian, Department of Defens

Eigenvalue-flipping Algorithm for Matrix Monte Carlo

Many physical systems can be described in terms of matrix models that we often cannot solve analytically. Fortunately, they can be studied numerically in a straightforward way. Many commonly used algorithms follow the Monte Carlo method, which is efficient for small matrix sizes but cannot guarantee ergodicity when working with large ones. In this paper, we propose an improvement of the algorithm that, for a large class of matrix models, allows to tunnel between various vacua in a proficient way, where sign change of eigenvalues is proposed externally. We test the method on two models: the pure potential matrix model and the scalar field theory on the fuzzy sphere.Comment: v2: minor corrections, references adde
