Variable abstraction and approximations in supervisory control synthesis
This paper proposes a method to simplify Extended Finite-state Automata (EFA) in such a way the least restrictive controllable supervisor is preserved. The method is based on variable abstraction, which involves the identification and removal of irrelevant variables from a model. Variable abstraction preserves controllability, and the paper shows how approximations can be used to ascertain least restrictiveness of the synthesis result. The approach has the modelling benefits of Extended Finite-state Automata, leads to optimal control solutions, and reduces the synthesis cost. Scalar and Spinor Particles in the Spacetime of a Domain Wall in String Theory
We consider scalar and spinor particles in the spacetime of a domain wall in
the context of low energy effective string theories, such as the generalized
scalar-tensor gravity theories. This class of theories allows for an arbitrary
coupling of the wall and the (gravitational) scalar field. First, we derive the
metric of a wall in the weak-field approximation and we show that it depends on
the wall's surface energy density and on two post-Newtonian parameters. Then,
we solve the Klein-Gordon and the Dirac equations in this spacetime. We obtain
the spectrum of energy eigenvalues and the current density in the scalar and
spinor cases, respectively. We show that these quantities, except in the case
of the energy spectrum for a massless spinor particle, depend on the parameters

Extension of Tycho catalog for low-extinction windows in the galactic bulge
We present in this work secondary catalogs up to based on
the Tycho reference frame (ESA, 1997) for 12 selected low-extinction fields
towards the galactic bulge. The observations have been performed with the
Askania-Zeiss Meridian Circle equiped with a CCD camera, located at the
Abrah\~ao de Moraes Observatory (Valinhos, Brazil) and operated by the
Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics, S\~ao Paulo University. The presented
catalog, though not complete, has been designed to help in intensive search
programmes (e.g. microlensing and variable searches) and therefore the selected
standards have a high astrometric and photometric ( band, approximately)
quality. The mean precisions obtained were in , 0.013'' in
, 0.030 for the standard deviation in magnitude and 0.0042 for the
magnitude when weighted with the error bars in each night (in the mean, 42
stars for the catalog of each window). Tables B.1 to B.12 are also available in

Stellar variability in low-extinction regions towards the Galactic Bulge
Intensive monitoring of low-extinction windows towards the galactic bulge has
provided in the last years valuable information for studies about the dynamics,
kinematics and formation history of this part of the galaxy, mainly by
characterizing the bulge stellar populations (Paczy\'nski, 1996). Since 1997,
we have been conducting an intensive photometric-astrometric survey of the
galactic bulge, with the monitoring of about 120000 stars in 12 windows
uniformly distributed in galactic latitude and longitude (Blanco & Terndrup,
1989 e Blanco, 1988) never before submitted to this kind of survey. For this
purpose, we have used the IAG/USP CCD Meridian Circle of the Abrah\~ao de
Moraes Observatory. The main objective of this work is the identification and
classification of variable objects. In this work we present the set up and
development of the necessary tools for a project like this and the posterior
analysis of our data. We briefly describe the construction of a program to
organize and detect variables among the observed stars, including real time
alerts (for variations greater than 0.3 magnitudes). The preliminary analysis
after the processing of 76 nights of observation yielded 479 variable stars,
from which 96.7 % of them are new. We discuss the preliminary classification of
this variables, based on: a) the observed amplitude of variation; b) the shape
of light curve; c) the expected variable classes among our data and d) the
calculated periods, whenever possible. Finally, we discuss the future
perspectives for the project and for the applications and analysis of the

Injection locking of a low cost high power laser diode at 461 nm
Stable laser sources at 461 nm are important for optical cooling of strontium
atoms. In most existing experiments this wavelength is obtained by frequency
doubling infrared lasers, since blue laser diodes either have low power or
large emission bandwidths. Here, we show that injecting less than 10 mW of
monomode laser radiation into a blue multimode 500 mW high power laser diode is
capable of slaving at least 50% of the power to the desired frequency. We
verify the emission bandwidth reduction by saturation spectroscopy on a
strontium gas cell and by direct beating of the slave with the master laser. We
also demonstrate that the laser can efficiently be used within the Zeeman

Dynamics of Wolbachia pipientis gene expression across the Drosophila melanogaster life cycle
Symbiotic interactions between microbes and their multicellular hosts have
manifold impacts on molecular, cellular and organismal biology. To identify
candidate bacterial genes involved in maintaining endosymbiotic associations
with insect hosts, we analyzed genome-wide patterns of gene expression in the
alpha-proteobacteria Wolbachia pipientis across the life cycle of Drosophila
melanogaster using public data from the modENCODE project that was generated in
a Wolbachia-infected version of the ISO1 reference strain. We find that the
majority of Wolbachia genes are expressed at detectable levels in D.
melanogaster across the entire life cycle, but that only 7.8% of 1195 Wolbachia
genes exhibit robust stage- or sex-specific expression differences when studied
in the "holo-organism" context. Wolbachia genes that are differentially
expressed during development are typically up-regulated after D. melanogaster
embryogenesis, and include many bacterial membrane, secretion system and
ankyrin-repeat containing proteins. Sex-biased genes are often organised as
small operons of uncharacterised genes and are mainly up-regulated in adult
males D. melanogaster in an age-dependent manner suggesting a potential role in
cytoplasmic incompatibility. Our results indicate that large changes in
Wolbachia gene expression across the Drosophila life-cycle are relatively rare
when assayed across all host tissues, but that candidate genes to understand
host-microbe interaction in facultative endosymbionts can be successfully
identified using holo-organism expression profiling. Our work also shows that
mining public gene expression data in D. melanogaster provides a rich set of
resources to probe the functional basis of the Wolbachia-Drosophila symbiosis

Kinematic segregation of nearby disk stars from the Hipparcos database
To better understand our Galaxy, we investigate the pertinency of describing
the sys tem of nearby disk stars in terms of a two-components Schwarzschild
velocity distributio n.Using the proper motion and parallax information of
Hipparcos database, we determine t he parameters characterizing the local
stellar velocity field of a sample of 22000 disk stars. The sample we use is
essentially the same as the one described by the criteria ad opted to study the
