Holographic d-wave superconductors
We construct top down models for holographic d-wave superfluids in which the
order parameter is a charged spin two field in the bulk. Close to the
transition temperature the condensed phase can be captured by a charged spin
two field in an R-charged black hole background (downstairs picture) or
equivalently by specific graviton perturbations of a spinning black brane
(upstairs picture). We analyse the necessary conditions on the mass and the
charge of the spin two field for a condensed phase to exist and we discuss the
competition of the d-wave phase with other phases such as s-wave superfluids.Comment: 58 pages, 7 figure
Boxed In: The True Cost of Extreme Isolation in New York's Prisons
The NYCLU set out to investigate New York's use of extreme isolation. We explored the history that led to the emergence and expansion of the practice in New York. We asked who New York subjects to extreme isolation, for what reasons, and for how long. We sought to understand and articulate its effects on prisoners and their families, as well as an often-overlooked population -- the corrections staff assigned to watch them. We compared New York's use of extreme isolation with practices in other states and asked if the widespread use of the practice violates legal standards. Finally, we considered how reforming the use of extreme isolation would affect the safety of New York's prisons and communities. In order to answer these questions, the NYCLU conducted an intensive year-long investigation. We communicated with more than 100 prisoners who have spent significant amounts of time -- in one case, more than 20 years -- inside a SHU cell. We interviewed family members and corrections staff. We consulted corrections experts, mental health professionals, lawyers and academics. We read decades of DOCCS reports and press coverage recounting the history of New York's SHU expansion. We researched the scientific and academic literature regarding the use and effects of extreme isolation. We studied domestic and international legal standards governing extreme isolation and the steps undertaken by other states to reform their use of the practice. Finally, we reviewed DOCCS' internal regulations and policies and analyzed thousands of pages of official DOCCS records obtained through New York's open records laws
The employment effect in retail trade of California's 1988 minimum wage increase
In this paper, the authors study the outcome of an unusually clean natural experiment--California's large minimum wage increase of 1988. Two different approaches to evaluating the experiment result in the same conclusion: the textbook analysis of minimum wages holds true. In particular, the authors find that employment growth in California's low-wage retail trade industry was slowed by the minimum wage increase.
ECONOMIC AND ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFITS OF SOIL/WATER NITROGEN TESTING: THE CASE OF CENTRAL NEBRASKA
This research presents a competitive dynamic model to evaluate the economic and groundwater quality benefits resulting from the adoption of soil/water nitrogen testing. The model is applied to an irrigated corn production county in the Nebraska Mid-State area where the groundwater contamination level from nitrates is reported to be, on average, 18.7 parts per million (ppm). Adoption of nutrient management practices would result in increased economic benefits to farmers and reduced nitrate stocks in groundwater.Environmental Economics and Policy,
Growing Old in America: Expectations vs. Reality
Presents survey results on indicators of old age, "felt age," and the upsides and downsides of growing older, by age, gender, income, and race/ethnicity. Highlights gaps between perceptions of younger adults and the self-reported experiences of seniors
