    The eyes of wild type fruit flies contain various pigments that contribute to a brick red color. Chromatography techniques are used to separate and view these pigments. IN this project, the students extract and gather absorbance spectra for these pigments using three methods: eye pigment chromatography, pigment extraction and spectrophotometry, and spectrophotometry and photosensitivity. The methods are compared to determine how efficient they are at separating and extracting pigments and producing reliable results when examining absorbance spectra. To explore the photosensitivity of the pigments, we compare absorbance spectra changes to a pigment solution

    Introduction: Rural communities have poorer health compared to urban populations due partly to having lesser healthcare access. Rural placements during medical education can equip students with the knowledge and skills to work in rural communities, and, it is hoped, increase the supply of rural physicians. It is unclear how students gain knowledge of rural generalism during placements, and how this can be understood in terms of place-based and/or sociocultural educational theories. To gain insight into these questions we considered the experiences of pre-clerkship medical students who completed two mandatory four-week rural placements during their second year of medical school. Methods: Data was collected using semi-structured interviews or focus groups, followed by thematic analysis of the interview transcripts. Results: Rural placements allowed students to learn about rural generalism such as breadth of practice, and boundary issues. This occurred mainly by students interacting with rural physician faculty, with the effectiveness of precepting being key to students acquiring knowledge and skills and reporting a positive regard for the placement experience. Discussion: Our data show the central role of generalist physician preceptors in how and what students learn while participating in rural placements. Sociocultural learning theory best explains student learning, while place-based education theory helps inform the curriculum. Effective training and preparation of preceptors is likely key to positive student placement experiences.Introduction : Les communautés rurales sont en moins bonne santé que les populations urbaines, en partie parce qu'elles ont moins accès aux soins de santé. Les stages de médecine en milieu rural peuvent permettre aux étudiants d'acquérir les connaissances et les compétences nécessaires pour travailler dans les communautés rurales et, on l'espère, augmenter le nombre de médecins y travaillent. On ne sait pas clairement comment les étudiants acquièrent des connaissances sur le généralisme rural au cours de leurs stages, et comment cela peut être compris en termes de théories éducatives socioculturelles et/ou basées sur le lieu de travail.  Pour répondre à ces questions, nous avons étudié les expériences d'étudiants en médecine au pré-clinique qui ont effectué deux stages obligatoires de quatre semaines en milieu rural au cours de leur deuxième année d'études de médecine. Méthodes : Les données ont été recueillies au moyen d'entrevues semi-structurées ou de groupes de discussion, suivis d'une analyse thématique des transcriptions des entrevues. Résultats : Les stages en milieu rural ont permis aux étudiants de se familiariser avec le généralisme rural, notamment l'étendue de la pratique et les questions de limites. L'efficacité du préceptorat est essentielle pour que les étudiants acquièrent des connaissances et des compétences et qu'ils aient une expérience de stage positive. Discussion :  Nos données témoignent du rôle central que jouent les médecins généralistes précepteurs quant au contenu et modes d’apprentissage des étudiants lorsqu'ils participent à des stages en milieu rural. La théorie de l'apprentissage socioculturel est celle qui explique le mieux l'apprentissage des étudiants, tandis que la théorie de la formation fondée sur le lieu contribue à orienter le programme d'études. Une formation et préparation efficace des précepteurs est probablement la clé d'une expérience de stage positive pour les étudiants

    Projected Utility of the Ready Set Return Application

    Introduction: An application (app) that summarizes best practices may promote standardized care among clinicians treating patients during anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) rehabilitation. The purpose of this study was to test the prototype of the Ready Set Return (RSR) app to determine receptiveness for use in clinical practice. Methods: Two mock patient cases were used to familiarize 19 physical therapists and athletic trainers with the RSR app. Then these participants provided feedback about the user experience, features, and content using Likert ratings and free-text fields through an online survey. Results: Most participants (89%-95%) would recommend the RSR app to others and noted that the app would allow them to stay up to date with current practice. Thematic analysis of free-text responses indicated that the app was easy to navigate and that evidence-based progressions and clinical milestones were useful in clinical practice. Users suggested enhancements that included adding patient access and specific treatment options. Discussion: Generalizable findings suggest that clinicians appreciated the details and images of specific tests and measures; automatic test scoring; and standardized benchmarks to progress care. Specific findings suggest the RSR app’s summary of evidence-informed practice may help standardize care, specifically for patients undergoing rehabilitation after ACL reconstruction. Conclusion: This subset of clinicians reacted positively to the prototype and felt that the RSR app would benefit their practice and patients. This feedback will guide the next iteration, advancing from a low-fidelity to high-fidelity prototype

    Neuroprotective efficacy of P7C3 compounds in primate hippocampus.

    There is a critical need for translating basic science discoveries into new therapeutics for patients suffering from difficult to treat neuropsychiatric and neurodegenerative conditions. Previously, a target-agnostic in vivo screen in mice identified P7C3 aminopropyl carbazole as capable of enhancing the net magnitude of postnatal neurogenesis by protecting young neurons from death. Subsequently, neuroprotective efficacy of P7C3 compounds in a broad spectrum of preclinical rodent models has also been observed. An important next step in translating this work to patients is to determine whether P7C3 compounds exhibit similar efficacy in primates. Adult male rhesus monkeys received daily oral P7C3-A20 or vehicle for 38 weeks. During weeks 2-11, monkeys received weekly injection of 5'-bromo-2-deoxyuridine (BrdU) to label newborn cells, the majority of which would normally die over the following 27 weeks. BrdU+ cells were quantified using unbiased stereology. Separately in mice, the proneurogenic efficacy of P7C3-A20 was compared to that of NSI-189, a proneurogenic drug currently in clinical trials for patients with major depression. Orally-administered P7C3-A20 provided sustained plasma exposure, was well-tolerated, and elevated the survival of hippocampal BrdU+ cells in nonhuman primates without adverse central or peripheral tissue effects. In mice, NSI-189 was shown to be pro-proliferative, and P7C3-A20 elevated the net magnitude of hippocampal neurogenesis to a greater degree than NSI-189 through its distinct mechanism of promoting neuronal survival. This pilot study provides evidence that P7C3-A20 safely protects neurons in nonhuman primates, suggesting that the neuroprotective efficacy of P7C3 compounds is likely to translate to humans as well

    Persistent holes in a fluid

    We observe stable holes in a vertically oscillated 0.5 cm deep aqueous suspension of cornstarch for accelerations a above 10g. Holes appear only if a finite perturbation is applied to the layer. Holes are circular and approximately 0.5 cm wide, and can persist for more than 10^5 cycles. Above a = 17g the rim of the hole becomes unstable producing finger-like protrusions or hole division. At higher acceleration, the hole delocalizes, growing to cover the entire surface with erratic undulations. We find similar behavior in an aqueous suspension of glass microspheres.Comment: 4 pages, 6 figure

    The Occupation-Centered Intervention Assessment: Bridging Theory and Practice in Fieldwork Education

    Occupational therapy’s identity is grounded in occupation-centered care. However, evidence suggests external factors in the healthcare system burden practitioners’ time and resources, reducing attention directed toward occupation-centered practice and student learning and transfer of theoretically grounded knowledge. The departure from theory-based practice can threaten the identity and viability of the profession. The Occupation-Centered Intervention Assessment (OCIA) was designed for practitioners or students to self-rate the degree to which interventions are occupation-based or occupation-focused, creating an occupation-centered framework. In this pilot explanatory sequential mixed methods study, Level II fieldwork educators and fieldwork students in Alaska completed OCIA training and utilized the tool. A pre- and post-survey identified attitudes toward theory application, feedback, confidence, developing and understanding occupation-centered perspectives, and the OCIA. Additionally, focus group participants discussed using the OCIA during Level II fieldwork and the impact on development, understanding, and communicating using an occupation-centered perspective. Results of the survey revealed preliminary receptivity to the tool as a communication aid and as a theoretical framework for an occupation-centered perspective. The focus group highlighted the “common language” provided by the tool and drew attention to contextual factors influencing the transfer of knowledge and use of the OCIA in practice. Further research is needed to understand the potential of the OCIA as a resource for facilitating student learning with a grounded, occupation-centered perspective
