We analyzed the infestation levels of Excorallana berbicensis on Acestrorhynchus falcirostris, Ageneiosus ucayalensis, Geophagus proximus, Hemiodus unimaculatus, Psectrogaster falcata and Serrasalmus gibbus in a reservoir in the Araguari River basin, northern Brazil, during the dry and rainy seasons. For P. falcata, the infestation levels due to E. berbicensis were greater during the rainy season. For all the species studied, the peak parasite prevalence was in the month of highest rainfall levels and there were two peaks of parasite abundance: one in the month with highest rainfall level and the other in the month of transition from the rainy season to the dry season. In these hosts, around 70% of the E. berbicensis specimens were collected during the rainy season. The body conditions of the hosts also did not suffer any seasonal influence. Despite the differences in seasonal rainfall levels, there was no fluctuation in transparency, turbidity, pH, electric conductivity, temperature and dissolved oxygen levels in the water, due to the stability of these parameters during the seasonal cycle investigated in this artificial Amazon ecosystem. This was the first report on the seasonality of infestation by E. berbicensis associated with fish

Entrepreneurship and well-being: the role of national entrepreneurship norm and the importance of meaningfulness at work

This study investigates whether entrepreneurship (operationalized as self-employment status) is related to higher levels of meaningfulness at work and individual’s well-being, specifically subjective vitality, when compared to regular employment. We propose that the impact of self-employment on meaningfulness at work would depend on countries’ normative context, namely on the national entrepreneurship prescriptive norm. We analysed 2010’s data from the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor and the European Social Survey on 16 European countries and tested a cross-level moderated mediation model. Results showed that entrepreneurship is positively related to individual’s well-being through the mediating effect of meaningfulness at work. However, the effect of entrepreneurship on individuals’ meaningfulness at work and, ultimately, on their subjective vitality, is stronger for people living in countries with less favorable national entrepreneurship norm. These findings provide evidence for framing meaningfulness at work as being contingent on the interaction between self-employment and national normative context and contribute to the literatures on entrepreneurship, meaningfulness, and well-being at workinfo:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio

Grasping the dialogical nature of acculturation

In this interesting article, Andreouli (2013). Identity and acculturation: The case of naturalised citizens in Britain. Culture & Psychology, 19, 1–47) presents a dialogical perspective on acculturation. To support this perspective, the author integrates the Dialogical Self Theory and the Social Representations Theory. Drawing on her theoretical explanation, we develop a conceptual review focused on two pairs of constructs – social representations/I-positions and polyphasia/polyphonia. Andreouli’s empirical study allowed her to operationalize some critiques about the two-dimensional perspective and its strategies on acculturation. Nevertheless, it seems that the author ends up replicating a more conventional and dual way of thinking. Their results give us privileged access to the negotiation of meanings and activation of promoter signs or, in other words, to the dialogical dynamics between I-positions. In this respect, we suggest that the assumption of a more dialogic and semiotic lens could be an interesting further development to this study
