Magentically-Induced Lattice Distortions and Ferroelectricity in Magnetoelectric GdMnO3
In this work we investigate the magnetic field dependence of Ag octahedra
rotation (tilt) and B2g symmetric stretching modes frequency at different
temperatures. Our field-dependent Raman investigation at 10K is interpreted by
an ionic displacive nature of the magnetically induced ferroelectric phase
transition. The frequency change of the Ag tilt is in agreement with the
stabilization of the Mn-Gd spin arrangement, yielding the necessary conditions
for the onset of ferroelectricity on the basis of the inverse
Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. The role of the Jahn-Teller cooperative
interaction is also evidenced by the change of the B2g mode frequency at the
ferroelectric phase transition. This frequency change allows estimating the
shift of the oxygen position at the ferroelectric phase transition and the
corresponding spontaneous polarization of 480 {\mu}C/m2, which agrees with
earlier reported values in single crystals. Our study also confirms the
existence of a large magnetic hysteresis at the lowest temperatures, which is a
manifestation of magnetrostiction.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure
Tunneling effects on impurity spectral function in coupled asymmetric quantum wires
The impurity spectral function is studied in coupled double quantum wires at
finite temperatures. Simple anisotropy in the confinement direction of the
wires leads to finite non-diagonal elements of the impurity spectral function
matrix. These non-diagonal elements are responsible for tunneling effects and
result in pronounced extra peak in the impurity spectral function up to
temperatures as high as 20 K.Comment: Accepted in Phys. Rev.
Structural and insulator-to-metal phase transition at 50 GPa in GdMnO3
We present a study of the effect of very high pressure on the orthorhombic
perovskite GdMnO3 by Raman spectroscopy and synchrotron x-ray diffraction up to
53.2 GPa. The experimental results yield a structural and insulator-to-metal
phase transition close to 50 GPa, from an orthorhombic to a metrically cubic
structure. The phase transition is of first order with a pressure hysteresis of
about 6 GPa. The observed behavior under very high pressure might well be a
general feature in rare-earth manganites.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures and 2 table

The probability of having advanced medical interventions is associated with age in out-of-hospital life-threatening situations.
The use of out-of-hospital emergency medical services by old and very old individuals is increasing. These patients frequently require complex evaluation and decision-making processes to determine a strategy of care, therapeutic choices or withdrawal of care in life-threatening situations. During out-of-hospital missions, thorough decision-making is difficult because of the limited amount of time and lack of direct access to medical charts or to pre-existing advance directives. In this setting, age may be used as a proxy to determine strategy of care, therapeutic choices or withdrawal of care, particularly in relation to advanced medical interventions. We aimed to determine how an emergency physician's initiation of out-of-hospital advanced medical interventions varies with the patient's age.
We performed a retrospective analysis of the missions conducted by the emergency physicians-staffed emergency medical services in a Swiss region. We used logistic regression analysis to determine whether the probability of receiving an advanced medical intervention was associated with the patient's age.
Among 21,922 out-of-hospital emergency adult missions requiring an emergency physician, the probability of receiving an advanced medical intervention decreased with age. It was highest among those aged 18 - 58 years and significantly lower among those aged â„â89Â years (ORâ=â0.66; 95Â % CI: 0.53 - 0.82). The probability of cardiopulmonary resuscitation attempts progressively decreased with age and was significantly lower for the three oldest age deciles (80 - 83, 84 - 88 and â„â89Â years).
The number of out-of-hospital advanced medical interventions significantly decreased for patients aged â„â89Â years. It is unknown whether this lower rate of interventions was related only to age or to other medical characteristics of these patients, such as the number or severity of comorbidities. Thus, further studies are needed to confirm whether this observation corresponds to underuse of advanced medical interventions in very old patients
