Astrometry with the Keck-Interferometer: the ASTRA project and its science

The sensitivity and astrometry upgrade ASTRA of the Keck Interferometer is introduced. After a brief overview of the underlying interferometric principles, the technology and concepts of the upgrade are presented. The interferometric dual-field technology of ASTRA will provide the KI with the means to observe two objects simultaneously, and measure the distance between them with a precision eventually better than 100 uas. This astrometric functionality of ASTRA will add a unique observing tool to fields of astrophysical research as diverse as exo-planetary kinematics, binary astrometry, and the investigation of stars accelerated by the massive black hole in the center of the Milky Way as discussed in this contribution.Comment: 22 pages, 10 figures (low resolution), contribution to the summerschool "Astrometry and Imaging with the Very Large Telescope Interferometer", 2 - 13 June, 2008, Keszthely, Hungary, corrected authorlis

First faint dual-field phase-referenced observations on the Keck interferometer

    Get PDF
Ground-based long baseline interferometers have long been limited in sensitivity by the short integration periods imposed by atmospheric turbulence. The first observation fainter than this limit was performed on January 22, 2011 when the Keck Interferometer observed a K=11.5 target, about one magnitude fainter than its K=10.3 limit. This observation was made possible by the Dual Field Phase Referencing instrument of the ASTRA project: simultaneously measuring the real-time effects of the atmosphere on a nearby bright guide star, and correcting for it on the faint target, integration time longer than the turbulence time scale are made possible. As a prelude to this demonstration, we first present the implementation of Dual Field Phase Referencing on the interferometer. We then detail its on-sky performance focusing on the accuracy of the turbulence correction, and on the resulting fringe contrast stability. We conclude with a presentation of early results obtained with Laser Guide Star AO and the interferometer.Comment: 10 pages, 12 figures, Proc. SPIE 201

"Feud language" in the paradigm of jurislinguistics: cognitivesemantic and law aspects

    No full text
In the article it is considered «feud speech» in the cognitive-semantic and legal aspects. Jurislinguistic as an interdisciplinary field, actively developing in recent time, uses the term «feud speech» that has not received, however, the terminological status, and full justification. Conducted cognitivesemantic analysis allows to identify in the texts of normative documents qualifying the semantic dominant language elements with the semantic attribute and the semantics of the action constituting the foundation of formation of the investigated phenomenon in the coordinates of linguistics and law. Crucial for determining the extent to which an element of «feude speech» becomes a sign of publicity, naturally manifestated in the properties of the recipient and use of communicative strategies. «Feud speech» is defined as a set of institutionally determinated negative speech practices based on the archetypal opposition «own – alien», and negative stereotypes. «Feud speech» is being implemented in the sphere of social and interpersonal relations

The scope of research: the scope of research is the engineering in Moscow in the first years after the October Revolution of 1917. Purpose: to determine what effect the economic policy of the Bolsheviks government had on the state of the civil engineering, how the central government’s orders were implemented in practice at the regional level. Materials and methods: the documents from the Central State Archives of Moscow are used, the methodology is based on the principles of historicism, objectivity, reliance on historical sources, analysis and presentation of the material used a problem-chronological method. Results: the study of concrete historical material allowed to give an objective description of the state of construction in Moscow in 1918–1921, to consider the structure, tasks and major activities of the Moscow Committee of State Structures. Data are given on the nature of the works performed, including the reconstruction of theatrical buildings, which can be used to further study the history of engineering and architecture of the Soviet period. Conclusions: the work of the Moscow Committee of State Structures was held in the conditions of acute shortage of material and human resources and was aimed at the gradual liquidation of private property and entrepreneurship in engineering. It was not possible to solve this problem completely, private construction cooperatives participated in the repair and reconstruction of public buildings. Particular attention was paid to the objects of education, health, social welfare and culture

The article based on unpublished archived documents deals with the history of the first civil engineering colleges in Moscow. They served as the foundation of professional training in civil engineering. Many distinguished persons, well-known as the founders of academic schools started their careers there. The first civil engineering college in Moscow, founded by M.K. Priorov in 1905, enjoyed high enrolment rates due to the growing needs in skilled builders. However, officers of the Ministry of Education filed complaints about poor quality training at Priorov's college. In 1907, several teachers headed by V.N. Obraztsov decided to launch another civil engineering college and to establish "Special Partnership of Lecturers and Engineers" to raise funds for the college equipment. Thirteen persons signed the agreement to join the Fund as shareholders. The General Meeting of the Founders voted in favour of three persons who entered the Fund Administration Board. V.N. Obraztsov, Director, had extensive powers in day-to-day affairs. The College was successful, and its success was highly appreciated by the Ministry of Education. It served as a good example for a team of lecturers at Priorov's college. In 1914, they reorganized this educational institution into a special partnership, which made it possible to develop their college more successfully. Until 1917, there were two civil engineering colleges organized as special partnerships of lecturers in Moscow

The interaction of octafluorotoluene (1a), as well as pentafluorobenzonitrile (1b) with tert-butylamine, followed by the oxidation of thus formed tert-butylanilines (2a,b) with meta-chloroperoxybenzoic acid led to functionalized perfluorinated phenyl tert-butyl nitroxides [namely, 4-(N-tert-butyl(oxyl)amino)heptafluorotoluene (3a) and 4-(N-tert-butyl(oxyl)amino)tetrafluorobenzonitrile (3b)] with nearly quantitative total yields. The molecular and crystal structures of nitroxide 3a were proved by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The radical nature of both nitroxides was confirmed by ESR data. The interaction of Cu(hfac)2 with the obtained nitroxides 3a,b gave corresponding trans-bis(1,1,1,5,5,5-hexafluoropentane-2,4-dionato-κ2O,O′)bis{4-(N-tert-butyl(oxyl)amino)perfluoroarene-κO}copper (II) complexes ([Cu(hfac)2(3a)2] and [Cu(hfac)2(3b)2]). X-ray crystal structure analysis showed square bipyramid coordination of a centrally symmetric Cu polyhedron with the axial positions occupied by oxygen atoms of the nitroxide groups. Magnetic measurements revealed intramolecular ferromagnetic exchange interactions between unpaired electrons of Cu(II) ions and paramagnetic ligands, with exchange interaction parameters JCu–R reaching 53 cm−1
