A novel approach to reconstructing signals of isotropy violation from a masked CMB sky

Statistical isotropy (SI) is one of the fundamental assumptions made in cosmological model building. This assumption is now being rigorously tested using the almost full sky measurements of the CMB anisotropies. A major hurdle in any such analysis is to handle the large biases induced due to the process of masking. We have developed a new method of analysis, using the bipolar spherical harmonic basis functions, in which we semi-analytically evaluate the modifications to SI violation induced by the mask. The method developed here is generic and can be potentially used to search for any arbitrary form of SI violation. We specifically demonstrate the working of this method by recovering the Doppler boost signal from a set of simulated, masked CMB skies.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figure

Multibranch Bogoliubov-Bloch spectrum of a cigar shaped Bose condensate in an optical lattice

We study properties of excited states of an array of weakly coupled quasi-two-dimensional Bose condensates by using the hydrodynamic theory. The spectrum of the axial excited states strongly depends on the coupling among the various discrete radial modes in a given symmetry. By including mode-coupling within a given symmetry, the complete excitation spectrum of axial quasiparticles with various discrete radial nodes are presented. A single parameter which determines the strength of the mode coupling is identified. The excitation spectrum in the zero angular momentum sector can be observed by using the Bragg scattering experiments.Comment: to apper in Phys. Rev.

Enriching health-related research through glycobiological approaches

In the Laboratory of Mechanistic Glycobiology at Michigan Technological University, we have been working in four distinct but related areas. Our findings can significantly influence human health-related research. (1) We have documented a molecular strategy that can improve drug designing. (2) We have shown that the tumor-associated protein galectin-3 can create problems in cancer biomarker assays by hiding the biomarkers. (3) In another project, we reported that the role of galectin-3 in cancer could be more complicated than what is reported in the literature. (4) Our team also detected a novel natural product with anti-fungal and anti-cancer activities.https://digitalcommons.mtu.edu/techtalks/1012/thumbnail.jp
