t-SURFF: Fully Differential Two-Electron Photo-Emission Spectra
The time dependent surface flux (t-SURFF) method is extended to single and
double ionization of two electron systems. Fully differential double emission
spectra by strong pulses at extreme UV and infrared wave length are calculated
using simulation volumes that only accommodate the effective range of the
atomic binding potential and the quiver radius of free electrons in the
external field. For a model system we find pronounced dependence of shake-up
and non-sequential double ionization on phase and duration of the laser pulse.
Extension to fully three-dimensional calculations is discussed
Performance Analysis of Iteratively Decoded Variable-Length Space-Time Coded Modulation
It is demonstrated that iteratively Decoded Variable Length Space Time Coded Modulation (VL-STCM-ID) schemes are capable of simultaneously providing both coding gain as well as multiplexing and diversity gain. The VL-STCM-ID arrangement is a jointly designed iteratively decoded scheme combining source coding, channel coding, modulation as well as spatial diversity/multiplexing. In this contribution, we analyse the iterative decoding convergence of the VL-STCM-ID scheme using symbol-based three-dimensional EXIT charts. The performance of the VL-STCM-ID scheme is shown to be about 14.6 dB better than that of the Fixed Length STCM (FL-STCM) benchmarker at a source symbol error ratio of 10?4, when communicating over uncorrelated Rayleigh fading channels. The performance of the VL-STCM-ID scheme when communicating over correlated Rayleigh fading channels using imperfect channel state information is also studied
Minimalist AdaBoost for blemish identification in potatoes
We present a multi-class solution based on minimalist Ad-
aBoost for identifying blemishes present in visual images of potatoes.
Using training examples we use Real AdaBoost to rst reduce the fea-
ture set by selecting ve features for each class, then train binary clas-
siers for each class, classifying each testing example according to the
binary classier with the highest certainty. Against hand-drawn ground
truth data we achieve a pixel match of 83% accuracy in white potatoes
and 82% in red potatoes. For the task of identifying which blemishes
are present in each potato within typical industry dened criteria (10%
coverage) we achieve accuracy rates of 93% and 94%, respectively
Segmental Spatiotemporal CNNs for Fine-grained Action Segmentation
Joint segmentation and classification of fine-grained actions is important
for applications of human-robot interaction, video surveillance, and human
skill evaluation. However, despite substantial recent progress in large-scale
action classification, the performance of state-of-the-art fine-grained action
recognition approaches remains low. We propose a model for action segmentation
which combines low-level spatiotemporal features with a high-level segmental
classifier. Our spatiotemporal CNN is comprised of a spatial component that
uses convolutional filters to capture information about objects and their
relationships, and a temporal component that uses large 1D convolutional
filters to capture information about how object relationships change across
time. These features are used in tandem with a semi-Markov model that models
transitions from one action to another. We introduce an efficient constrained
segmental inference algorithm for this model that is orders of magnitude faster
than the current approach. We highlight the effectiveness of our Segmental
Spatiotemporal CNN on cooking and surgical action datasets for which we observe
substantially improved performance relative to recent baseline methods.Comment: Updated from the ECCV 2016 version. We fixed an important
mathematical error and made the section on segmental inference cleare
Nanoladder cantilevers made from diamond and silicon
We present a "nanoladder" geometry that minimizes the mechanical dissipation
of ultrasensitive cantilevers. A nanoladder cantilever consists of a
lithographically patterned scaffold of rails and rungs with feature size
100 nm. Compared to a rectangular beam of the same dimensions, the mass and
spring constant of a nanoladder are each reduced by roughly two orders of
magnitude. We demonstrate a low force noise of zN and zN in a one-Hz bandwidth for devices made from silicon and
diamond, respectively, measured at temperatures between 100--150 mK. As opposed
to bottom-up mechanical resonators like nanowires or nanotubes, nanoladder
cantilevers can be batch-fabricated using standard lithography, which is a
critical factor for applications in scanning force microscopy
Pure spin current in a two-dimensional topological insulator
We predict a mechanism to generate a pure spin current in a two-dimensional
topological insulator. As the magnetic impurities exist on one of edges of the
two-dimensional topological insulator, a gap is opened in the corresponding
gapless edge states but another pair of gapless edge states with opposite spin
are still protected by the time-reversal symmetry. So the conductance plateaus
with the half-integer values can be obtained in the gap induced by
magnetic impurities, which means that the pure spin current can be induced in
the sample. We also find that the pure spin current is insensitive to weak
disorder. The mechanism to generate pure spin currents is generalized for
two-dimensional topological insulators.Comment: 5 pages, 6 figure
Langevin Dynamics of the vortex matter two-stage melting transition in Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O in the presence of straight and of tilted columnar defects
In this paper we use London Langevin molecular dynamics simulations to
investigate the vortex matter melting transition in the highly anisotropic
high-temperature superconductor material Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O in the
presence of low concentration of columnar defects (CDs). We reproduce with
further details our previous results obtained by using Multilevel Monte Carlo
simulations that showed that the melting of the nanocrystalline vortex matter
occurs in two stages: a first stage melting into nanoliquid vortex matter and a
second stage delocalization transition into a homogeneous liquid. Furthermore,
we report on new dynamical measurements in the presence of a current that
identifies clearly the irreversibility line and the second stage delocalization
transition. In addition to CDs aligned along the c-axis we also simulate the
case of tilted CDs which are aligned at an angle with respect to the applied
magnetic field. Results for CDs tilted by with respect to c-axis
show that the locations of the melting and delocalization transitions are not
affected by the tilt when the ratio of flux lines to CDs remains constant. On
the other hand we argue that some dynamical properties and in particular the
position of the irreversibility line should be affected.Comment: 13 pages, 11 figure
