An observation of cosmic ray positrons from 10-20 GeV
A balloon flight of the University of Chicago electron telescope was performed. Making use of the east-west asymmetry in the geomagnetic cut off rigidity, the cosmic ray positrons and negatrons were separated over the range 10 GeV to 20 GeV. The positron to electron ratio, e+/(e++e-), was measured to be 17% + or - 5%, significantly higher than the ratio measured in the 1 GeV to 10 GeV range by other experiments. This increase appears to suggest that either a primary component of positrons become significant above 10 GeV, or that the spectrum of primary negatrons decreases above 10 GeV more sharply than that of secondary positrons
Quantization of Whitney functions
We propose to study deformation quantizations of Whitney functions. To this
end, we extend the notion of a deformation quantization to algebras of Whitney
functions over a singular set, and show the existence of a deformation
quantization of Whitney functions over a closed subset of a symplectic
manifold. Under the assumption that the underlying symplectic manifold is
analytic and the singular subset subanalytic, we determine that the Hochschild
and cyclic homology of the deformed algebra of Whitney functions over the
subanalytic subset coincide with the Whitney--de Rham cohomology. Finally, we
note how an algebraic index theorem for Whitney functions can be derived.Comment: 10 page
Slow X-ray bursts and chromospheric flares with filament disruption
The data from OGO-5 and OSO-7 X-ray experiments have been analyzed to study six chromospheric flares with filament disruption associated with slow thermal X-ray bursts. Filament activation accompanied by a slight X-ray enhancement precedes the first evidence of H alpha flare by a few minutes. Rapid increase of the soft X-ray flux is accompanied by a sudden brightening of the filament when viewed on-band H alpha. Thereafter the bright chromospheric strands reach their maximum brightness with maximum X-ray flux. Any plateau or slow decay phase in the X-ray flux is accompanied by a quieting in filament activity and even by filament re-appearance. The height of the disrupted prominence is proportional to the soft X-ray flux for the August 3, 1970 limb occulted event
