Strong correlations generically protect d-wave superconductivity against disorder
We address the question of why strongly correlated d-wave superconductors,
such as the cuprates, prove to be surprisingly robust against the introduction
of non-magnetic impurities. We show that, very generally, both the
pair-breaking and the normal state transport scattering rates are significantly
suppressed by strong correlations effects arising in the proximity to a Mott
insulating state. We also show that the correlation-renormalized scattering
amplitude is generically enhanced in the forward direction, an effect which was
previously often ascribed to the specific scattering by charged impurities
outside the copper-oxide planes.Comment: 4+e page
Variational wave functions of a vortex in cyclotron motion
In two dimensions the microscopic theory, which provides a basis for the
naive analogy between a quantized vortex in a superfluid and an electron in an
uniform magnetic field, is presented. A one-to-one correspondence between the
rotational states of a vortex in a cylinder and the cyclotron states of an
electron in the central gauge is found. Like the Landau levels of an electron,
the energy levels of a vortex are highly degenerate. However, the gap between
two adjacent energy levels does not only depend on the quantized circulation,

DASCH 100-yr light curves of high-mass X-ray binaries
We analyzed the 100-yr light curves of Galactic high-mass X-ray binaries
using the Harvard photographic plate collection, made accessible through the
DASCH project (Digital Access to a Sky Century at Harvard). As scanning is
still in progress, we focus on the four objects that are currently well
covered: the supergiant X-ray binary Cyg X-1 (V1357 Cyg), and the Be X-ray
binaries 1H 1936+541 (BD+53 2262), RX J1744.7-2713 (HD 161103), and RX
J2030.5+4751 (SAO 49725), the latter two objects being similar to gamma Cas.
The star associated with Cyg X-1 does not show evidence for variability with an
amplitude higher than 0.3 magnitude over a hundred years. We found significant
variability of one magnitude with timescales of more than 10 years for SAO
49725, as well as a possible period of 500-600 days and an amplitude of 0.05
magnitude that might be the orbital, or super-orbital period of the system. The
data is insufficient to conclude for HD 161103 but suggests a similar long-term
variability. We thus observe an additional characteristic of gamma Cas-like
objects: their long-term variability. This variability seems to be due to the
slow evolution of a decretion disk around the Be star, but may be triggered by
the presence of a compact object in the system, possibly a white dwarf. This
characteristic could be used to identify further similar objects otherwise

Pharyngeal and Cervical Cancer Incidences Significantly Correlate with Personal UV Doses Among Whites in the United States
Because we found UV-exposed oral tissue cells have reduced DNA repair and apoptotic cell death compared with skin tissue cells, we asked if a correlation existed between personal UV dose and the incidences of oral and pharyngeal cancer in the United States. We analyzed the International Agency for Research on Cancer\u27s incidence data for oral and pharyngeal cancers by race (white and black) and sex using each state\u27s average annual personal UV dose. We refer to our data as ‘white’ rather than ‘Caucasian,’ which is a specific subgroup of whites, and ‘black’ rather than African-American because blacks from other countries around the world reside in the U.S. Most oropharyngeal carcinomas harboured human papilloma virus (HPV), so we included cervical cancer as a control for direct UV activation. We found significant correlations between increasing UV dose and pharyngeal cancer in white males (p=0.000808) and females (p=0.0031) but not in blacks. Shockingly, we also found cervical cancer in whites to significantly correlate with increasing UV dose (p=0.0154). Thus, because pharyngeal and cervical cancer correlate significantly with increasing personal UV dose in only the white population, both direct (DNA damage) and indirect (soluble factors) effects may increase the risk of HPV-associated cancer
