Regulatory Compliance when the Rule of Law Is Weak: Evidence from China’s Environmental Reform
What drives regulatees’ behaviors when the institution of law is weak? This study seeks to answer the question by examining environmental regulation enforcement in China. Based on survey and interview data on Hong Kong-owned manufacturing enterprises in the Pearl River Delta Region, Guangdong Province, we found that their decisions to adopt basic and proactive environmental management practices were less driven by concerns for legality than by their perceptions of the regulators’ actions and gestures. Enterprises adopted basic environmental practices to avoid potential punishment and more proactive practices to avoid potentially arbitrary impositions from regulatory officials. Regulated enterprises were more likely to adopt both basic and proactive environmental practices if they had less difficulties in understanding the enforced regulations. These findings suggest important ways in which regulatory compliance behaviors in a developmental context may differ from those in Western countries.postprin
Two-beam photoacoustic phase measurement of the thermal diffusivity of a Gd-doped bulk YBCO superconductor
The two-beam photoacoustic phase measurement was applied to measure quantitatively the thermal diffusivity (s) of a ceramic bulk high-Tc superconductor. Neglecting the effects of thermal dilation, and thermoelastic bending was proved valid in accordance with our composite piston model for the chosen experimental conditions. It was found that s shows different features at the onset and offset temperatures corresponding to the normal–superconducting (NS) transition. A dip was seen at the resistivity transition onset temperature and a cusp at the offset temperature where the electrical resistance disappears. The presence of the cusp at the offset temperature is proposed to be related to weak coupling between superconducting grains. Our studies indicate that the two-beam phase measurement is a very sensitive method for superconductor characterization and NS transition detection. The experimental results also confirm the presence of a large energy gap and strong electron–phonon coupling mechanism in the YBCO superconductor. ©1996 American Institute of Physics.published_or_final_versio
The Impact of Three Key Paradigm Shifts on Disability, Inclusion, and Autism in Higher Education in England: An Integrative Review
In the past two decades, students have been more willing to disclose their disability status when entering higher education (HE) in the United Kingdom (UK). Concurrently, higher education institutions (HEIs) have adopted disability policies and service teams for enhancing equality, diversity, and inclusion in the UK. The purpose of this integrative review is to understand the basis of these trends. The article suggests that there have been three major key paradigm shifts that underpin this cultural change. (1) There was a paradigm shift in terms of changing the dominant models for conceptualising disability from a medical model of disability to a social model of disability and to an affirmative model of disability, together with a debate and policy development demonstrating a concern for greater social inclusion and exclusion; (2) with a massive increase in students entering HE and the rising importance of league tables and ranking systems, universities experienced a paradigm shift from teacher-centred learning (TCL) to inclusive student-centred learning and teaching (SCLT); and (3) the increase in autism disclosure in HE signifies a shift in a conceptualisation of autism from a disorder to a disability and an example of neurodiversity

Introduction
Non-enzymatic glycation (NEG) is a posttranslational modification of the organic matrix that results in the formation of advanced glycation end-products (AGEs). In bone, the accumulation of AGEs play an important role in determining fracture resistance, and elevated levels of AGEs have been shown to adversely affect the bone’s propensity to brittle fracture. It was thus hypothesized that the suppression of tissue turnover in cortical bone due to the administration of bisphosphonates would cause increased accumulation of AGEs and result in a more brittle bone matrix.
Methods
Using a canine animal model (n = 12), we administered daily doses of a saline vehicle (VEH), alendronate (ALN 0.20, 1.00 mg/kg) or risedronate (RIS 0.10, 0.50 mg/kg). After a 1-year treatment, the mechanical properties, intracortical bone turnover, and the degree of nonenzymatic cross-linking of the organic matrix were measured from the tibial cortical bone tissue of these animals.
Results
There was a significant accumulation of AGEs at high treatment doses (+49 to + 86%; p < 0.001), but not at doses equivalent to those used for the treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis, compared to vehicle. Likewise, postyield work-to-fracture of the tissue was significantly reduced at these high doses (−28% to −51%; p < 0.001) compared to VEH. AGE accumulation inversely correlated with postyield work-to-fracture (r 2 = 0.45; p < 0.001), suggesting that increased AGEs may contribute to a more brittle bone matrix.
Conclusion
High doses of bisphosphonates result in the accumulation of AGEs and a reduction in energy absorption of cortical bone. The increased accumulation of AGEs in these tissues may help explain altered bone matrix quality due to the administration of BPs in animal models
Tectonic affinity of the west Qinling terrane (central China): North China or Yangtze?
[33] Neogene (̃14 Ma) basaltic magmatism has occurred in west Qinling, at the northeastern corner of the Tibetan Plateau. Furthermore, U-Pb ages and Hf isotopic data of xenocrystic zircons indicate that the unexposed Neoarchean (2.7-2.5 Ga) basement beneath the Phanerozoic outcrops in west Qinling has affinities with the southern margin of the north China block. The basement has a complex evolution, including the addition of juvenile mantle material at ̃2.7- 2.4 Ga and 1.1-0.8 Ga and reworking at ̃1.8 Ga and possibly at 1.4 Ga. Phanerozoic thermal events at 320-300 Ma, 230 Ma, and 160 Ma also have affected the basement. We interpret the west Qinling orogenic terrane as originally separated from the north China block, joined to the northern Yangtze block during the Meso-Neoproterozoic, and finally involved in the northward subduction and collision of the Yangtze block in the Paleozoic and early Mesozoic and subsequent lithospheric extension in the Jurassic. © 2010 by the American Geophysical Union.published_or_final_versio
