Zeroth Law compatibility of non-additive thermodynamics
Non-extensive thermodynamics was criticized among others by stating that the
Zeroth Law cannot be satisfied with non-additive composition rules. In this
paper we determine the general functional form of those non-additive
composition rules which are compatible with the Zeroth Law of thermodynamics.
We find that this general form is additive for the formal logarithms of the
original quantities and the familiar relations of thermodynamics apply to
these. Our result offers a possible solution to the longstanding problem about
equilibrium between extensive and non-extensive systems or systems with
different non-extensivity parameters.Comment: 18 pages, 1 figur
Relapsing Polychondritis Following Alopecia Areata
A case of alopecia areata followed by relapsing polychondritis is presented. Similar cases from the literature are reviewed and speculation about the relationship of these diseases is offered. Although the occurrence of these diseases together could be coincidental, an association seems immunologically plausible. Thus, relapsing polychondritis might be an unusual systemic manifestation of alopecia areata
Discrete nuclear domains of poly(A) RNA and their relationship to the functional organization of the nucleus
The functional organization of the nucleus was studied using a fluorescence microscopy approach which allowed integration of positional information for RNA, DNA, and proteins. In cells from sea urchin to human, nuclear poly(A) RNA was found concentrated primarily within several discrete transcript domains which often surrounded nucleoli. Concentrations of poly(A) RNA were coincident with snRNP antigen clusters, providing evidence for the localization of pre-mRNA splicing at these sites. The spatial relationship of transcript domains with respect to various classes of DNA was established, in that the poly(A) RNA-rich regions coincided with discrete regions of low DNA density and were non-randomly distributed with respect to specific DNA sequences. Centromeric DNA and late-replicating DNA did not overlap transcript domains, whereas a subset of early-replicating DNA may. Results indicate that transcript domains do not result directly from a simple clustering of chromatin corresponding to metaphase chromosomes bands. Finally, observations on the reassembly of these domains after mitosis suggest that the clustering of snRNP antigens may be dependent on the reappearance of pol II transcription. Implications of these findings for overall nuclear structure and function are considered, including a discussion of whether transcript domains may be sites of polymerase II transcription reflecting a clustering of active genes
On Weighted Generalized Residual Information Measure
In this paper, we have proposed the concept of weighted generalized residual entropy of order α and type β, and have shown that the proposed measure characterizes the distribution function uniquely
The Present status and the projected programme on niobium-tantalum metallurgy in India
Niobium and tantalum which belong to the family of ref-ractory rare metals, have assumed great strategic impo-rtance in present day material development programmes, specially in industries like chemical and nuclear engineering, electronics and aerospace. The use of niob-ium as ferroniobium contributing to carbide stabilisat-ion in stainless steel is well established and accounts for the major demand for niobium in the world today. At the same time, niobium-based alloys have been considered excellent for high temperature service, and in particular two alloys (i) SU-16 (Nb- 11 W- 3Mo -21-If-0 - 08C), and (ii) Nb-752 (Nb-IOW- 25Zr)'--have been developed for application in aerospace structure components. With its relatively low neutron absorption cross-section (Q8= I 1 barns), compatibility both with uranium fuels and liquid metal coolants, and good high temperature strength and fabrication characteristics, niobium is also an attra-ctive candidate for nuclear energy application, parti-cularly in fast reactors. Also, a zirconium-alloy conta-ining 2.5% of niobium is a potential competitor to
