    Distribution, feeding condition, and growth of Japanese Spanish mackerel (Scomberomorus niphonius) larvae in the Seto Inland Sea

    Distribution of eggs and larvae and feeding and growth of larvae of Japanese Spanish mackerel (Scomberomorus niphonius) were investigated in relation to their prey in the Sea of Hiuchi, the Seto Inland Sea, Japan, in 1995 and 1996. The abundance of S. niphonius eggs and larvae peaked in late May, corresponding with that of clupeid larvae, the major prey organisms of S. niphonius larvae. The eggs were abundant in the northwestern waters and the larvae were abundant in the southern waters in late May in both years, indicating a southward drift during egg and yolksac stages by residual f low in the central part of the Sea of Hiuchi. Abundance of clupeid larvae in southern waters, where S. niphonius larvae were abundant, may indicate a spawning strategy on the part of first-feeding S. niphonius larvae to encounter the spatial and temporal peak in ichthyoplankton prey abundance in the Seto Inland Sea. Abundance of the clupeid larvae was higher in 1995 than in 1996. Feeding incidence (percentage of stomachs with food; 85.3% in 1995 and 67.7% in 1996) and mean growth rate estimated from otolith daily increments (1.05 mm/d in 1995 and 0.85 mm/d in 1996) of S. niphonius larvae in late May were significantly higher in 1995. Young-of-the-year S. niphonius abundance and catch per unit of fishing effort of 1-year-old S. niphonius in the Sea of Hiuchi was higher in 1995, indicating a more successful recruitment in this year. Spatial and temporal correspondence with high ichthyoplankton prey concentration was considered one of the important determinants for the feeding success, growth, and survival of S. niphonius larvae

    A Study on the Assessment of Management Frameworks for Waste Electronic Home Appliances

    Serious adverse impacts on the environment and human health from the recycling and disposal of electronic waste have occurred in the past and continue to occur in China today, due to the lack of a national management strategy. With aiming to support the management strategy development, a study was carried out to plan and quantitatively evaluate the optional management frameworks for the selected five main types of large electronic home appliances in Beijing, the capital city and a typically big municipality in China. This paper outlined the main findings yielded from the series of assessment studies which started from the generation amount prediction and material flow analysis of the used electronic appliances, planning and optimization of the collection & transportation frameworks and ended at the economic evaluation of the optional recycling processes for the waste appliances. Although the revenue could be expected from the result of isolated evaluation of the recycling processes, the entire system will be economically unavailable if the used appliances are still collected from the owners at current prices. The traditional understanding of householders on the values of their used appliances should be changed in Beijing and China as a whole. Establishment of a formal collection system that could take back the used appliances at lower prices (less than 40% of the current level) is the key for the construction of a formal management framework with sustainability

    Constraint on the ejecta mass for a black hole-neutron star merger event candidate S190814bv

    We derive the upper limit to the ejecta mass of S190814bv, a black hole-neutron star merger candidate, through the radiative transfer simulations for kilonovae with the realistic ejecta density profile as well as the detailed opacity and heating rate models. The limits to the ejecta mass strongly depend on the viewing angle. For the face-on observations (≀45∘\le45^\circ), the total ejecta mass should be smaller than 0.1 M⊙0.1\,M_\odot for the average distance of S190814bv (D=267D=267 Mpc), while larger mass is allowed for the edge-on observations. We also derive the conservative upper limits of the dynamical ejecta mass to be 0.02 M⊙0.02\,M_\odot, 0.03 M⊙0.03\,M_\odot, and 0.05 M⊙0.05\,M_\odot for the viewing angle ≀20∘\le 20^\circ, ≀50∘\le 50^\circ, and for ≀90∘\le 90^\circ, respectively. We show that the {\it iz}-band observation deeper than 2222 mag within 2 d after the GW trigger is crucial to detect the kilonova with the total ejecta mass of 0.06 M⊙0.06\,M_\odot at the distance of D=300D=300 Mpc. We also show that a strong constraint on the NS mass-radius relation can be obtained if the future observations put the upper limit of 0.03 M⊙0.03\,M_\odot to the dynamical ejecta mass for a BH-NS event with the chirp mass smaller than â‰Č3 M⊙\lesssim 3\,M_\odot and effective spin larger than ≳0.5\gtrsim 0.5.Comment: 16 pages, 15 figure

    Fish assemblages associated with three types of artificial reefs: density of assemblages and possible impacts on adjacent fish abundance

    We evaluated the effectiveness of wooden artificial reefs (ARs) as fish habitat. Three types of ARs, made of cedar logs, broadleaf tree logs, and PVC pipes, respectively, were deployed in triplicate at 8-m depth off Maizuru, Kyoto Prefecture, Sea of Japan, in May 2004. Fish assemblages associated with each of the nine ARs were observed by using SCUBA twice a month for four years. Fish assemblages in the adjacent habitat were also monitored for two years before and four years after reef deployment. In the surveyed areas (ca. 10 m2) associated with each of the cedar, broadleaf, and PVC ARs, the average number of fish species was 4.14, 3.49, and 3.00, and the average number of individuals was 40.7, 27.9, and 20.3, respectively. The estimated biomass was also more greater when associated with the cedar ARs than with other ARs. Visual censuses of the habitat adjacent to the ARs revealed that the number of fish species and the density of individuals were not affected by the deployment of the ARs. Our results support the superiority of cedar as an AR material and indicate that deployment of wooden ARs causes no reduction of fish abundance in adjacent natural reefs

    Black Hole Perturbation

    We present analytic calculations of gravitational waves from a particle orbiting a black hole. We first review the Teukolsky formalism for dealing with the gravitational perturbation of a black hole. Then we develop a systematic method to calculate higher order post-Newtonian corrections to the gravitational waves emitted by an orbiting particle. As applications of this method, we consider orbits that are nearly circular, including exactly circular ones, slightly eccentric ones and slightly inclined orbits off the equatorial plane of a Kerr black hole and give the energy flux and angular momentum flux formulas at infinity with higher order post-Newtonian corrections. Using a different method that makes use of an analytic series representation of the solution of the Teukolsky equation, we also give a post-Newtonian expanded formula for the energy flux absorbed by a Kerr black hole for a circular orbit.Comment: 120 pages ptptex file.
