    Model Building of Metal Oxide Surfaces and Vibronic Coupling Density as a Reactivity Index: Regioselectivity of CO2_2 Adsorption on Ag-loaded Ga2_2O3_3

    The step-by-step hydrogen-terminated (SSHT) model is proposed as a model for the surfaces of metal oxides. Using this model, it is found that the vibronic coupling density (VCD) can be employed as a reactivity index for surface reactions. As an example, the regioselectivity of CO2_2 adsorption on the Ag-loaded Ga2_2O3_3 photocatalyst surface is investigated based on VCD analysis. The cluster model constructed by the SSHT approach reasonably reflects the electronic structures of the Ga2_2O3_3 surface. The geometry of CO2_2 adsorbed on the Ag-loaded Ga2_2O3_3 cluster has a bent structure, which is favorable for its photocatalytic reduction to CO.Comment: 18 pages, 11 figure

    Battery-type column for caesium ions separation using electroactive film of copper hexacyanoferrate nanoparticles

    We reported a novel and compact battery-type column using nanoparticles film of copper hexacyanoferrate (CuHCF NPs film) for sequential removal of Cs from wastewater. Different from the electrochemical deposition, chemical spray or chemical bath deposition, our film was prepared by coating water dispersed CuHCF NPs ink on the electrode surface through a simple wet process similar to ink printing. The battery-type column indicated Cs adsorption and desorption can be achieved by electrochemical redox of CuHCF NPs film, through switching the potentials between two sandwiched electrodes. Kinetic studies revealed both the static attraction and electrochemical oxidation-reduction of Fe (II/III) contributed to Cs separation. Insignificant change in the current after 100\ua0cycles of durability test indicated the CuHCF NPs film is relatively stable, suggesting the battery-type column has a long service life for Cs removal from wastewater

    A preliminary study of clinical assessment of left unilateral spatial neglect using a head mounted display system (HMD) in rehabilitation engineering technology

    PURPOSE: Unilateral spatial neglect (USN) is a common syndrome in which a patient fails to report or respond to stimulation from the side of space opposite a brain lesion, where these symptoms are not due to primary sensory or motor deficits. The purpose of this study was to analyze an evaluation process system of USN in various visual fields using HMD in order to understand more accurately any faults of USN operating in the object-centred co-ordinates. METHOD: Eight stroke patients participated in this study and they had Left USN in clinical test, and right hemisphere damage was checked by CT scan. Assessments of USN were performed the BIT common clinical test (the line and the stars cancellation tests) and special tests the zoom-in condition (ZI) condition and the zoom-out condition (ZO) condition. The subjects were first evaluated by the common clinical test without HMD and then two spatial tests with HMD. Moreover, we used a video-recording for all tests to analyze each subject's movements. RESULTS: For the line cancellation test under the common condition, the mean percentage of the correct answers at the left side in the test paper was 94.4%. In the ZI condition, the left side was 61.8.% and the right side was 92.4.%. In the ZO condition, the left side was 79.9% and the right side was 91.7.%. There were significant differences among the three conditions. The results of the stars cancellation test also showed the same tendency as the line bisection test. CONCLUSION: The results showed that the assessment of USN using a technique of HMD system may indicate the disability of USN more than the common clinical tests. Moreover, it might be hypothesized that the three dimensional for USN test may be more related to various damage and occurrence of USN than only the two dimensional test

    5-Aminolevulinic acid regulates the inflammatory response and alloimmune reaction

    Abstract5-Aminolevulinic acid (5-ALA) is a naturally occurring amino acid and precursor of heme and protoporphyrin IX (PpIX). Exogenously administrated 5-ALA increases the accumulation of PpIX in tumor cells specifically due to the compromised metabolism of 5-ALA to heme in mitochondria. PpIX emits red fluorescence by the irradiation of blue light and the formation of reactive oxygen species and singlet oxygen. Thus, performing a photodynamic diagnosis (PDD) and photodynamic therapy (PDT) using 5-ALA have given rise to a new strategy for tumor diagnosis and therapy. In addition to the field of tumor therapy, 5-ALA has been implicated in the treatment of inflammatory disease, autoimmune disease and transplantation due to the anti-inflammation and immunoregulation properties that are elicited with the expression of heme oxygenase (HO)-1, an inducible enzyme that catalyzes the rate-limiting step in the oxidative degradation of heme to free iron, biliverdin and carbon monoxide (CO), in combination with sodium ferrous citrate (SFC), because an inhibitor of HO-1 abolishes the effects of 5-ALA. Furthermore, NF-E2-related factor 2 (Nrf2), mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK), and heme are involved in the HO-1 expression. Biliverdin and CO are also known to have anti-apoptotic, anti-inflammatory and immunoregulatory functions.     A case of extravesical malacoplakia, the first case in Japan, is described in detail. The patient was a 61-year-old woman with a right flank mass. Radiologically, the mass was thought to be of the renal origin. Surgically, however, the tumor was found attached not only to the cortical surface but extended to the retroperitoneum and psoas muscle. Pathological examination confirmed the lesion to be malacoplakia characterized by the presence of von Hansemann cells and Michaelis-Gutmann bodies.</p
