    Influencia materna en la morfometría larvaria del cangrejo de pinzas pincel Hemigrapsus takanoi (Decapoda: Brachyura)

    The morphology of larvae is a key factor influencing their behaviour, performance and ultimately their survival. There is evidence indicating a significant morphological variability among broods, and that this may be related to the size or conditions of the mother. However, this maternal influence is not consistent across decapod crustaceans. Using 35 broods from different mothers of the crab Hemigrapsus takanoi collected in the same locality of inner Tokyo Bay and at the same time, we tested the hypothesis that there is a positive relationship between the size of the mother and the progeny’s morphology. Our results indicate that different patterns in the length of the lateral, rostral and dorsal spines differentiated two distinct morphogroups of larvae. These morphogroups were linked to the size of the mother, showing that larger mothers produced bigger larvae with longer carapace spines. It is possible that larger size and longer spines can influence swimming performance and predator avoidance, respectively. These relationships should be tested in future experimental studies.La morfología larvaria es un factor clave que influencia el comportamiento, rendimiento y en último lugar la supervivencia larvaria. Hay evidencias que indican una variabilidad morfológica significativa entre puestas, y que esto puede estar relacionado con la talla y condición de la madre. Sin embargo, la influencia materna no es consistente para todos los crustáceos decápodos. Usando 35 puestas de diferentes madres del cangrejo Hemigrapsus takanoi, recolectadas en la misma localidad en el interior de la Bahía de Tokio, y al mismo tiempo, testeamos la hipótesis de que hay una relación positiva entre la talla de la madre y la morfología de la progenie. Nuestros resultados indican que diferentes patrones de longitud de las espinas laterales, rostrales y laterales diferencian dos morfogrupos distintos de larvas. Esos morfogrupos se asociaron a la talla de la madre, mostrando que aquellas madres grandes producían larvas de mayor tamaño con espinas más largas. Es posible que un tamaño mayor y espinas más largas puedan influenciar la capacidad natatoria y la evasión de predadores respectivamente. Estas relaciones deberían ser testeadas en futuros estudios experimentales

    Evaluation of Apoptotic Cells Induced by Ultraviolet Light B Radiation in Epidermal Sheets Stained by the TUNEL Technique

    Two major components of epidermal cells, keratinocytes and Langerhans cells, are injured by ultraviolet light B radiation, resulting in sunburn cell (apoptotic cell) formation, impaired function, and a reduced number of Langerhans cells. Quantitative analysis of Langerhans cell damage is usually performed using epidermal sheets, whereas that of keratinocytes has been performed by counting the number of sunburn cells in vertical tissue sections. In this study we assessed the influences of ultraviolet light B radiation on epidermal cells by apoptotic cell formation, using murine epidermal sheets stained by terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP nick end labeling technique. Ten to 75 mJ per cm2 of ultraviolet light B radiation induced apoptotic cells in abdominal skin of C3H mice. The cells were induced in 6 h after 50 mJ per cm2 of ultraviolet light B irradiation with the peak in number in 24 h, 18.8 ± 5.0 per mm2 and 97.7 ± 7.4 per mm2, respectively. One week later, the apoptotic cells were not visualized. As C3H/He, BALB/C, and C57BL/6 mice showed almost the same frequency of apoptosis in epidermal sheets from 50 mJ per cm2 ultraviolet light B-irradiated skin, the induction of the cells by ultraviolet light B radiation did not depend on the genetic trait of the mouse. Xeroderma pigmentosum type A gene-deficient mice, however, showed a greater induction of apoptotic cells (216.9 ± 25.2 per mm2) by ultraviolet light B radiation than xeroderma pigmentosum type A wild-type mice (89.5 ± 13.6 per mm2) and conventional mice. Pretreatment with a SPF 60 sunscreen agent was quite effective in reducing the induction of apoptotic cells. Using confocal laser scanning microscopy and double staining, 1.5 ± 2.7% of apoptotic cells were Ia-positive cells in 24 h after 50 mJ per cm2 of ultraviolet light B radiation. Apoptotic Ia-positive cells were not observed 48 h after the radiation. On the other hand, no apoptotic dendritic epidermal T cells were observed in up to 75 mJ per cm2 of ultraviolet light B radiated skin. Thus, nearly all apoptotic cells were keratinocytes, and Langerhans cells and dendritic epidermal T cells appeared resistant to ultraviolet light B-induced apoptosis. Compared with the assessment in vertical tissue sections, the terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP nick end labeling technique with epidermal sheets appeared to be a more physiologically relevant method for quantitative evaluation of apoptotic epidermal cells induced by ultraviolet light B radiation

    Individual differences in autistic traits predict the perception of direct gaze for males, but not for females

    Despite the emphasis of autism spectrum disorders as a continuum of atypical social behaviors and the sexual heterogeneity of phenotypic manifestations, whether gaze processing constitutes an autistic endophenotype in both sexes remains unclear. Using the Autism-Spectrum Quotient and a psychophysical approach in a normal population (N = 128), here we demonstrated that individual differences in autistic traits predicted direct-gaze perception for males, but not for females. Our findings suggest that direct-gaze perception may not constitute an autistic endophenotype in both sexes, and highlight the importance of sex differences when considering relationships between autistic traits and behaviors

    Successful Management of Pregnancy Complicated by Klippel-Trenaunay Syndrome Using MR Angiography-Based Evaluation

    Klippel-Trenaunay syndrome (KTS) is a rare congenital disease, and extensive cutaneous hemangiomas and abnormal venous vessels are characteristic. In our case, to manage her pregnancy with KTS, whole-body MRA was performed before delivery. A 29-year-old woman was referred at 28 weeks because of prominent vulvovaginal varicosities due to KTS. At 35 weeks, hypertrophy and multiple venous varicosities of her leg as well as massive vulvovaginal varicosities became prominent with a normal coagulation profile. Systematic MRAs revealed hemangiomas and varicosities in the right leg, the lower abdomen, and the pubic region, while no obvious AVM was detected around the bronchial tube and spine. We decided to deliver her baby by cesarean section at 37 weeks under general anesthesia, and a healthy baby was delivered. No blood transfusion was required. Prophylaxis against thrombosis was performed after the operation. She was discharged with her baby. Her vulvovaginal varicosities shrunk considerably one month later

    A Young Man with Anti-NMDAR Encephalitis following Guillain-Barré Syndrome

    A 19-year-old man developed rapidly progressive muscle weakness and dysesthesia in the extremities, and dyspnea after a flu-like episode. Nerve conduction studies showed reduced motor nerve conduction velocities with conduction block, and sensory nerve action potentials could not be evoked. The patient was diagnosed as having Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS), and was treated with 2 cycles of intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIg) therapy and was assisted by mechanical ventilation. During the recovery course of the illness, he experienced several attacks of psychomotor agitation from the 37th hospital day, and generalized tonic convulsive seizures suddenly developed on the 42nd hospital day. Brain MRI showed high-intensity lesions in the bilateral thalamus and medial temporal lobes. The convulsions were controlled by continuous thiopental infusion (until the 50th hospital day) and mechanical ventilation (until the 84th hospital day). Intravenous methylprednisolone pulse therapy (1,000 mg/day) for 3 days followed by dexamethasone (16 mg/day) was added. After relief of convulsive seizures, prominent orolingual dyskinesia appeared, and on MRI marked atrophy of the bilateral medial temporal lobes was seen. Anti-N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) antibodies in serum and cerebrospinal fluid were positive on the 92nd hospital day. Anti-NMDAR encephalitis usually affects young females but a small number of male cases with this disease have been reported. Our male patient was unique in having GBS, a post-infectious autoimmune disease, as a preceding disease, suggesting that anti-NMDAR encephalitis itself is caused by a parainfectious autoimmune mechanism

    A cytokine mixture of GM-CSF and IL-3 that induces a neuroprotective phenotype of microglia leading to amelioration of (6-OHDA)-induced Parkinsonism of rats

    Dopamine (DA) agonists are widely used as primary treatments for Parkinson's disease. However, they do not prevent progressive degeneration of dopaminergic neurons, the central pathology of the disease. In this study, we found that subcutaneous injection of a cytokine mixture containing granulocyte macrophage colony-stimulating factor and interleukin-3 (IL-3) markedly suppressed dopaminergic neurodegeneration in 6-hydroxydopamine-lesioned rats, an animal model of Parkinson's disease. The cytokine mixture suppressed the decrease of DA content in the striatum, and ameliorated motor function in the lesioned rats. In response to the cytokine injection, dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra pars compacta increased expression of the antiapoptotic protein Bcl-xL. Microglial activation in the pars compacta was evident in both the saline- and cytokine-injected rats. However, the cytokine mixture suppressed expression of the proinflammatory cytokines IL-1β and tumor necrosis factors α, and upregulated the neuroprotective factors insulin-like growth factor-1 and hepatocyte growth factor. Similar responses were observed in cultured microglia. Detailed morphometric analyses revealed that NG2 proteoglycan-expressing glial cells increased in the cytokine-injected rats, while astrocytic activation with increased expression of antioxidative factors was evident only in the saline-injected rats. Thus, the present findings show that the cytokine mixture was markedly effective in suppressing neurodegeneration. Its neuroprotective effects may be mediated by increased expression of Bcl-xL in dopaminergic neurons, and the activation of beneficial actions of microglia that promote neuronal survival. Furthermore, this cytokine mixture may have indirect actions on NG2 proteoglycan-expressing glia, whose role may be implicated in neuronal survival
