Extended Reality and the Graphic Design Curriculum

    Get PDF
VXR technology has seen significant growth in recent years across all commercial industries and is poised to continue that trend. The graphic design industry is embracing XR as a new medium, and XR skills are in high demand within the field. Institutions of higher education must adopt XR—and particularly AR—into the graphic design curriculum to keep pace with the industry. Several barriers are slowing this curricular adoption but can be overcome. Advances in AR technology have created an opportunity for its use as both a pedagogical tool and a creative medium. Integrating AR with traditional graphic design elements and principles will improve the learning process and outcomes of design students while elevating the design industry as a whole

Adjuvant Migraine Medications in the Treatment of Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss.

Objectives/hypothesisTo examine the hearing outcomes of patients with sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) treated with oral and intratympanic (IT) steroid only or a combination of steroid and migraine treatment. Our hypothesis was that adjuvant migraine medications may improve outcomes in SSNHL.MethodsA retrospective chart review at a tertiary otology center was conducted to identify patients with SSNHL who received oral steroid and IT dexamethasone injection(s) with or without migraine medications (a combination of nortriptyline and topiramate).ResultsA total of 47 patients received oral steroid and IT dexamethasone injection(s) only, and 46 patients received oral steroid and IT dexamethasone injection(s) as well as migraine lifestyle changes plus a combination of nortriptyline and topiramate. There were no significant differences in demographics and baseline audiometric data between the two groups. Both groups demonstrated improvements in pure tone average (PTA) and hearing thresholds at 250 Hz and 8000 Hz posttreatment. However, compared to steroid-only group, the adjuvant migraine medications group had significantly greater improvements in hearing thresholds at the lower frequencies (250 Hz, 500 Hz, 1000 Hz). Patients in the latter cohort also had greater improvement in PTA (P = .01) and received fewer IT injections (P = .04) PTA improvement of ≥ 10 dB was observed in 36 patients (78%) in the adjuvant migraine medications group and 22 patients (46%) in the control group (P < .001).ConclusionIn multimodal treatment of SSNHL, supplementing oral and IT steroid with migraine medications may result in greater improvements in lower frequency hearing thresholds and PTA. Furthermore, adjuvant migraine treatment can lead to decrease in number of IT injections, thus reducing procedure-related risks and complications.Level of evidence3 Laryngoscope, 131:E283-E288, 2021

Curcuma longa L: pulsed electric field pretreatment followed by subcritical water extraction with addition of acidic modifier

In this study, subcritical water extraction (SWE) was applied to the Curcuma longa that was subjected to the pulse electric field (PEF) pretreatments. In addition, to investigate the possibility of improving the stability of curcuminoids and considering that curcuminoids are stable in an acidic environment, the addition of the HCl acid as an extraction modifier was investigated

Consequences of activating the calcium-permeable ion channel TRPV1 in breast cancer cells with regulated TRPV1 expression

Increased expression of specific calcium channels in some cancers and the role of calcium signaling in proliferation and invasion have led to studies assessing calcium channel inhibitors as potential therapies for some cancers. The use of channel activators to promote death of cancer cells has been suggested, but the risk of activators promoting cancer cell proliferation and the importance of the degree of channel over-expression is unclear. We developed an MCF-7 breast cancer cell line with inducible TRPV1 overexpression and assessed the role of TRPV1 levels on cell death mediated by the TRPV1 activator capsaicin and the potential for submaximal activation to promote proliferation. The TRPV1 level was a determinant of cell death induced by capsaicin. A concentration response curve with varying TRPV1 expression levels identified the minimum level of TRPV1 required for capsaicin induced cell death. At no level of TRPV1 over-expression or capsaicin concentration did TRPV1 activation enhance proliferation. Cell death induced by capsaicin was necrotic and associated with up-regulation of c-Fos and RIP3. These studies suggest that activators of specific calcium channels may be an effective way to induce necrosis and that this approach may not always be associated with enhancement of cancer cell proliferation

Emerging macrolide resistance in Bordetella pertussis in mainland China: findings and warning from the global pertussis initiative

Whooping cough, or pertussis, is a highly communicable infectious disease caused by the bacterium Bordetella pertussis. Vaccination once reduced the incidence of the disease, but a global resurgence of the infection happened during the past two decades, likely due to the waning immunity of vaccination. Macrolides such as erythromycin and azithromycin are the drugs of primary choice for treatment. In this personal view, we call for attention to macrolide-resistant B. pertussis (MRBP), which has emerged and prevailed in mainland China for years and are exclusively mediated by mutations in the 23S rRNA gene. Whether the prevalence of MRBP in China results from overuse of azithromycin in clinical medicine remains unknown. The incidence of MRBP is low in other countries, but this could be a technical illusion since China employs culture as the mainstream diagnostic method whereas nucleic-acid amplification test being widely used in other countries fail to test antimicrobial susceptibility. Given the increasingly frequent global travel that facilitates microbial transmission worldwide, there is a pressing need to perform international surveillance on MRBP to prevent the potential circulation of the organism. Finding alternative agents that possess good activity against B. pertussis is also urgently required.Fil: Feng, Ye. Zhejiang University School of Medicine; ChinaFil: Chiu, Cheng Hsun.
