Electrospun 3D fibrous scaffolds for chronic wound repair

    No full text
Chronic wounds are difficult to heal spontaneously largely due to the corrupted extracellular matrix (ECM) where cell ingrowth is obstructed. Thus, the objective of this study was to develop a three-dimensional (3D) biodegradable scaffold mimicking native ECM to replace the missing or dysfunctional ECM, which may be an essential strategy for wound healing. The 3D fibrous scaffolds of poly(lactic acid-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) were successfully fabricated by liquid-collecting electrospinning, with 5~20 µm interconnected pores. Surface modification with the native ECM component aims at providing biological recognition for cell growth. Human dermal fibroblasts (HDFs) successfully infiltrated into scaffolds at a depth of ~1400 µm after seven days of culturing, and showed significant progressive proliferation on scaffolds immobilized with collagen type I. In vivo models showed that chronic wounds treated with scaffolds had a faster healing rate. These results indicate that the 3D fibrous scaffolds may be a potential wound dressing for chronic wound repair.MOE (Min. of Education, S’pore)Published versio

A New Method for Automated Measurement of Sand Dune Migration Based on Multi-Temporal LiDAR-Derived Digital Elevation Models

While remote sensing methods have long been used for coastal and desert sand dune studies, few methods have been developed for the automated measurement of dune migration in large dune fields. To overcome a major limitation of an existing method named “pairs of source and target points (PSTP)”, this paper proposes a toe line tracking (TLT) method for the automated measurement of dune migration rate and direction using multi-temporal digital elevation models (DEM) derived from light detection and ranging (LiDAR) data. Based on a few simple parameters, the TLT method automatically extracts the base level of a dune field and toe lines of individual dunes. The toe line polygons derived from two DEMs are processed using logical operators and other spatial analysis methods implemented in the Python programming language in a geographic information system. By generating thousands of random sampling points along source toe lines, dune migration distances and directions are calculated and saved with the sampling point feature class. The application of the TLT method was demonstrated using multi-temporal LiDAR-derived DEMs for a 9 km by 2.4 km area in the White Sands Dune Field in New Mexico (USA). Dune migration distances and directions for three periods (24 January 2009–26 September 2009, 26 September 2009–6 June 2010, and 24 January 2009–6 January 2010) were calculated. Sensitivity analyses were carried out using different window sizes and toe heights. The results suggest that both PSTP and TLT produce similar sand dune migration rates and directions, but TLT is a more generic method that works for dunes with or without slipfaces that reach the angle of repose

Types and Genesis of Siderite in the Coal-Bearing Beds of the Late Permian Xuanwei Formation in Eastern Yunnan, China

The Late Permian strata of the Xuanwei Formation in the eastern Yunnan region exhibit extensive diverse morphological features within siderite deposits. These variations in siderite deposits suggest potential differences in their formation processes. In this study, fieldwork and comprehensive indoor studies revealed four distinct forms of siderite deposits: stratiform-laminated, lens-like nodule, sandstone cementation, and fracture filling. The stratiform-laminated siderite, varying in color from bluish-grey to dark grey, is composed of uniformly sized microcrystalline to fine-grained siderite along with detrital matter, displaying precise layering and banding structures that suggest direct deposition from cyclic iron-rich seawater under reducing conditions. Lens-like-nodule siderite, which appears grey-yellow, is composed of mud microcrystalline siderite, medium to coarse-grained pseudo-ooids, and glauconite. It shows conformable distribution characteristics resulting from the diagenetic differentiation of iron-rich sediments under reducing conditions during the diagenetic and early diagenetic periods. Siderite as sandstone cementation exhibits a yellow-brown color and consists of dispersed colloidal siderite and cemented siderite clumps that fill intergranular pores of detrital particles. It precipitated under reducing conditions within those intergranular pores. Siderite filling fractures typically appear as vein-like or network-like structures intersecting bedding at large angles. They exhibit grain structures with significant variations in size. These siderite deposits exhibit exceptional purity and result from siderite dissolution during sedimentary periods, followed by reprecipitation within regional extensional fractures during the diagenetic phase. The primary occurrence of siderite deposits in the study area is within coal-bearing strata, as revealed by the integration of sedimentary profiles and sedimentary facies analysis. The coal-bearing strata, influenced by the Emeishan large igneous province, underwent iron enrichment during and after volcanic eruptions while developing a reducing environment, which was facilitated by abundant vegetation. Consequently, geological processes led to siderite layers, lens-like siderite nodules, and siderite cementation. The Yanshan orogeny induced extensive high-angle fracture development in epigenetic coal-bearing strata, facilitating fluid circulation and the redistribution of soluble siderite. This geological activity resulted in the formation of vein-like structures composed of siderite

In order to explore the possibility that adding an appropriate amount of alkaline activator into fly ash cement may improve the early activity of fly ash and ensure the strength performance of concrete, this study analyzed the influence of 0–30% fly ash substitute on the early and late (3–28 days) compressive strength of concrete by using three methods, namely, the concrete laboratory test, orthogonal test, and neural network, under the condition of 0.5 water binder. We obtained the following results: (1) The strength of the concrete mixed with fly ash at the same alkali and the same age decreases with the increase of fly ash content and decreases with the decrease of age; the strength is the highest when the alkali content is 6% or 5%. (2) The higher the content of fly ash, the lower the strength of the mixture, and the greater the decrease of the early strength of the mixture, while the optimum dosage of NaOH is the same. (3) Orthogonal experimental design can be effectively used to analyze the primary and secondary degree of each factor and the best combination of them (cement, fly ash, NaOH, standard, water, etc.). (4) High correlations between the compressive strength and the component composition of concrete can be obtained using the prediction abilities of the neural networks. The above test results show that on the basis of the concrete compressive strength test, the comprehensive application of the orthogonal test and the neural network method can be used to analyze the relationship between strength and the variables and to test the influence of the variables and their interaction on concrete strength, and the results are accurate and reliable

LA–ICP–MS U–Pb Dating, Elemental Mapping and In Situ Trace Element Analyses of Cassiterites from the Gejiu Tin Polymetallic Deposit, SW China: Constraints on the Timing of Mineralization and Precipitation Environment

As a major constituent in magmatic–hydrothermal ore deposits, cassiterites, with moderate amounts of U and low Pb, can be dated with U–Pb geochronology. The tetragonal lattice structure makes cassiterites capable of incorporating dozens of elements within its crystal lattice (e.g., Fe, Ti, W, Zr, Hf, Ta, Nb, Mn, Sc, V, and Sb). Variations of these elements record information of potential elemental substitution mechanisms and precipitation environments of cassiterites. In this study, we collected cassiterite grains from four different ore styles of the Gejiu tin polymetallic deposit to perform LA–ICP–MS U–Pb dating, multiple element mapping, and in situ trace element analysis on these cassiterites. Systematic U–Pb dating yielded Tera–Wasserburg lower intercepted ages at around 85 Ma, coinciding with zircon U–Pb ages of regional Late Yanshanian granitoids, within their respective analytical uncertainties. Such age coincidence, combined with the spatial association, suggests that tin mineralization may be genetically related to the Late Cretaceous granitic magmatism. Multielemental mapping shows that the distribution of Nb, Ta, and Ti in the cassiterite grains correlates well with the regular oscillatory zoning patterns in cathodoluminescence (CL) images. The relatively high Sb, Fe, W, Ga, and U concentrations control the dark luminescing domains in these cassiterite grains. The systematic variations in chemical compositions suggest that trace elements such as Sc, V, Fe, and Ga incorporate in cassiterites via coupled substitutions of Sc3+ + V5+ ↔ 2 (Sn, Ti)4+, Fe3+ + Ga5+ ↔ 2 (Sn, Ti)4+ and Fe3+ + OH– ↔ Sn4+ + O2– or Fe3+ + H+ ↔ Sn4+. The covariation of redox sensitive elements such as W, U, Fe, and Sb indicates that the ”tin-granite” type of cassiterites were formed under an oxidized state whereas cassiterites from skarn, massive sulfide, and oxidized ore styles were precipitated in a reducing environment

Petrogenesis and tectonic setting of the Early Cretaceous granitoids in the eastern Tengchong terrane, SW China: constraint on the evolution of Meso-Tethys

As a result of the evolution of Meso-Tethys, Early Cretaceous granitoids are widespread in the eastern Tengchong terrane, SW China, which is considered as the southern extension of the Tibetan Plateau. These igneous rocks are therefore very important for understanding the tectonic setting of Meso-Tethys and the formation of the Tibetan Plateau. In this paper, we present new zircon U-Pb dating, whole-rock elemental, and Nd isotopic data of granitoids obtained from the eastern Tengchong terrane. Our results show that these granitoids are composed of monzogranites and granodiorites and formed at ca. 124 Ma in the Early Cretaceous. Mineralogically and geochemically, these granitoids display metaluminous nature and affinity to I-type granites, which are derived from preexisting intracrustal igneous source rocks. The predominantly negative whole-rock epsilon(Nd)(t) values (-10.86 to -8.64) for all samples indicate that they are derived mainly from the partial melting of the Mesoproterozoic metabasic rocks in the lower crust. Integrating previous studies with the data presented in this contribution, we propose that the Early Cretaceous granitic rocks (135-110 Ma) also belong to I-type granites with minor high fractionation. Furthermore, in discriminant diagrams for source, granitoids are mainly derived from the partial melting of metaigneous rocks with minor sediments in the lower crust. The new identification of the Myitkyina Meso-Tethys ophiolitic suite in eastern Myanmar and mafic enclaves indicate that these Cretaceous igneous rocks were the products of the tectonic evolution of the Myitkyina Tethys Ocean, which was related to post-collisional slab rollback. Moreover, the Tengchong terrane is probably the southern extension of the South Qiangtang terrane

Geological disasters are prevalent during urbanization in the mountainous areas of southwest China due to the complex geographic and fragile geologic conditions. This paper relies on the ArcGIS platform as the model operation carrier and takes Yiliang County of Yunnan Province as the research area. Nine evaluation factors such as slope and elevation were selected, and the risk assessment of geological disasters in Yiliang County is carried out by using the combination weighting method. The results show that: (1) the extremely high-risk areas and high-risk areas are distributed in the central, western, and northeastern parts of Yiliang County, of which 164 disaster points are distributed in the area, accounting for 72.56% of the total disaster points; (2) the elevation, human engineering activities, vegetation coverage, and distance from the river are the four main factors affecting the development of geological disasters in the area; (3) the proportions of extremely high-risk areas, high-risk areas, medium-risk areas, and low-risk areas in the total area of the county were 8.08%, 19.61%, 30.59%, and 41.72%, respectively; (4) the verification of the evaluation results by the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve shows that the evaluation accuracy is 80%, and the zoning results are consistent with the spatial and temporal distribution of historical disaster points. The combined weighting method can effectively evaluate the risk of geological disasters in Yiliang County, and the results can be used as a scientific reference for local government departments to carry out relevant work
