    Experiences of and preparedness for Intercultural Teacherhood in Higher Education : non-specialist English teachers’ positioning, agency and sense of legitimacy in China

They were interviewed to find out about their experiences and perceptions of this ‘improvised’ Intercultural Teacherhood. The study shows that their engagement with intercultural communication differs while the presence of international students has a major impact on all the teachers’ identity and sense of legitimacy.     Classification, replication, and transcription of Nidovirales

    Nidovirales is one order of RNA virus, with the largest single-stranded positive sense RNA genome enwrapped with membrane envelope. It comprises four families (Arterividae, Mesoniviridae, Roniviridae, and Coronaviridae) and has been circulating in humans and animals for almost one century, posing great threat to livestock and poultry,as well as to public health. Nidovirales shares similar life cycle: attachment to cell surface, entry, primary translation of replicases, viral RNA replication in cytoplasm, translation of viral proteins, virion assembly, budding, and release. The viral RNA synthesis is the critical step during infection, including genomic RNA (gRNA) replication and subgenomic mRNAs (sg mRNAs) transcription. gRNA replication requires the synthesis of a negative sense full-length RNA intermediate, while the sg mRNAs transcription involves the synthesis of a nested set of negative sense subgenomic intermediates by a discontinuous strategy. This RNA synthesis process is mediated by the viral replication/transcription complex (RTC), which consists of several enzymatic replicases derived from the polyprotein 1a and polyprotein 1ab and several cellular proteins. These replicases and host factors represent the optimal potential therapeutic targets.     Functional Divergence among Silkworm Antimicrobial Peptide Paralogs by the Activities of Recombinant Proteins and the Induced Expression Profiles

    Antimicrobial peptides are small-molecule proteins that are usually encoded by multiple-gene families. They play crucial roles in the innate immune response, but reports on the functional divergence of antimicrobial peptide gene families are rare. In this study, 14 paralogs of antimicrobial peptides belonging to cecropin, moricin and gloverin families were recombinantly expressed in pET expression systems. By antimicrobial activity tests, peptides representing paralogs in the same family of cecropin and moricin families, displayed remarkable differences against 10 tested bacteria. The evolutionary rates were relatively fast in the two families, which presented obvious functional divergence among paralogs of each family. Four peptides of gloverin family had similar antimicrobial spectrum and activity against tested bacteria. The gloverin family showed similar antimicrobial function and slow evolutionary rates. By induced transcriptional activity, genes encoding active antimicrobial peptides were upregulated at obviously different levels when silkworm pupae were infected by three types of microbes. Association analysis of antimicrobial activities and induced transcriptional activities indicated that the antimicrobial activities might be positively correlated with induced transcriptional activities in the cecropin and moricin families. These results suggest that representative BmcecB6, BmcecD and Bmmor as the major effector genes have broad antimicrobial spectrum, strong antimicrobial activity and high microbe-induced expression among each family and maybe play crucial roles in eliminating microbial infection

    A “Special” plan: unpacking racial inequality in Singapore's education landscape

    In the 1970s, the People’s Action Party (PAP) introduced the Special Assistance Plan (SAP) programme in selected primary and secondary schools in Singapore. The plan served as a response to the declining standards of Mandarin among Chinese students amidst the growing importance of English, as the government saw a need to preserve traditional Chinese schools with rich heritage and culture. However, since its introduction, there have also been debates regarding racial and cultural diversity within the education system due to the emphasis on English and Mandarin proficiency in SAP schools. This thesis explores the formation of Singapore's education system and the continuation of SAP schools from the post-colonial period to the early 2000s of Singapore’s history. I delve into the broader socioeconomic factors that influenced perceptions of racial inequality, how the state further perpetuates this, and how the perceived biases of SAP schools towards certain ethnic groups reinforce racial stereotypes.Bachelor of Arts in Histor

    Levels of 91 circulating inflammatory proteins and risk of lumbar spine and pelvic fractures and peripheral ligament injuries: a two-sample mendelian randomization study

    Abstract Objective Lumbar spine and pelvic fractures(LPF) are combined with peripheral ligament injuries(PLI), frequently. It has been reported that the site of fracture injury is usually paralleled by the secretion of inflammatory proteins. This study aimed to investigate the causal relationship between 91 circulating inflammatory proteins and LPF and PLI by using a Two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis. Methods Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with 91 circulating inflammatory proteins, as exposures were selected from a large genome-wide association study (GWAS). The genetic variant data for LPF and PLI as outcomes from the FinnGen consortium. The inverse-variance-weighted (IVW) method was utilized as the main analysis for exposures and outcomes. In addition, the final results were reinforced by the methods of MR Egger, weighted median, simple mode, and weighted mode. The sensitivity analyses were used to validate the robustness of results and ensure the absence of heterogeneity and horizontal pleiotropy. MR-Steiger was used to assess whether the causal direction was correct to avoid reverse causality. Results This study has shown that Beta-nerve growth factor(Beta-NGF) and Interferon gamma(IFN-gamma) are both involved in the occurrence of LPF and PLI, and they are reducing the risk of occurrence(OR:0.800, 95%CI: 0.650–0.983; OR:0.723, 95%CI:0.568–0.920 and OR:0.812, 95%CI:0.703–0.937; OR:0.828, 95%CI:0.700–0.980). Similarly, Axin-1 and Sulfotransferase 1A1 (SULT-1A1) were causally associated with LPF(OR:0.687, 95%CI:0.501–0.942 and OR:1.178,95%CI:1.010–1.373). Furthermore, Interleukin-4(IL-4), Macrophage inflammatory protein 1a(MIP-1a), and STAM binding protein(STAM-BP) were causally associated with PLI(OR:1.236, 95% CI: 1.058–1.443; OR:1.107, 95% CI: 1.008–1.214 and OR:0.759, 95% CI: 0.617–0.933). The influence of heterogeneity and horizontal pleiotropy were further excluded by sensitivity analysis. Conclusion This study provides new insights into the relationship between circulating inflammatory proteins and LPF and PLI, and may provide new clues for predicting this risk

    The quick and the dry: Fast-absorbing and quick-drying wool fabrics with good washing durability are fabricated by functionalizing reactive siloxane monolayer on wool fiber surface, followed by grafting an ultrathin silica nanoparticles layer using an in situ growth method.     Fabricating Superhydrophilic Wool Fabrics

    A simple method for fabricating environmentally stable superhydrophilic wool fabrics is reported here. An ultrathin silica layer coated on the wool altered both the surface roughness and the surface energy of the fiber and endowed the wool fabrics with excellent water absorption. The process of coating silica sols was dependent on an acid solution of low pH, which influenced the electrostatic interactions between nanoparticles and wool fibers. The morphology and composition of silica-sol-coated wool fabrics were characterized by a combination of SEM, TEM, EDX, FTIR, and XPS measurements. The possible mechanism and size effect of silica nanoparticles on the hydrophilic property of wool fabric were discussed. The washing fastness of the superhydrophilic wool fabrics in perchlorethylene and water was also evaluated. This study shows that wool fabrics modified by optical transparence, chemical stability, and nontoxic silica sols are promising in constructing smart textiles.Institute of Textiles and Clothin
