    Teaching Math with Confidence-Recommendations for Improving Numeracy from the Lens of Confidence Building

    Despite the vast amount of literature surrounding the topic of financial literacy and related problems, there is still no universally accepted solution to this issue because the main factors causing financial literacy problems are still not fully understood both by researchers and current policy-makers. A possible new approach was discovered by Skagerlund et al. (2018), as their research suggested that financial literacy is driven by numeracy (the ability to process and perform basic numerical concepts and calculations) rather than direct knowledge about financial concepts. Given that numeracy is an effort based task, this policy brief provides a list of recommendations for developing numeracy from the standpoint of motivating effort to practice and improve the numeracy and mathematical skills of people for them to have the tools necessary to become financially literate, which may be more effective than creating a dedicated course on the topic of financial literacy. The results of the study confirmed that effort is indeed motivated by higher levels of confidence. Furthermore, information, particularly feedback regarding performance, plays a crucial role in shaping future confidence and, by extension, future levels of motivation and effort. Guided by these findings, this brief proposes the following policy recommendations

    This experimental study tested the relationship between confidence and effort with the ultimate objective of discovering how these factors may influence financial literacy. This was done through a modified version of a slider test and ball allocation task. The population consisted of 85 random participants who were primarily approached through social media. A simple OLS regression, along with robustness checks, namely the Tobit model and instrumental variable (IV) regression model using Tobit estimators, were utilized to confirm the causal relationship between confidence and effort

    Finishing the euchromatic sequence of the human genome

    The sequence of the human genome encodes the genetic instructions for human physiology, as well as rich information about human evolution. In 2001, the International Human Genome Sequencing Consortium reported a draft sequence of the euchromatic portion of the human genome. Since then, the international collaboration has worked to convert this draft into a genome sequence with high accuracy and nearly complete coverage. Here, we report the result of this finishing process. The current genome sequence (Build 35) contains 2.85 billion nucleotides interrupted by only 341 gaps. It covers ∌99% of the euchromatic genome and is accurate to an error rate of ∌1 event per 100,000 bases. Many of the remaining euchromatic gaps are associated with segmental duplications and will require focused work with new methods. The near-complete sequence, the first for a vertebrate, greatly improves the precision of biological analyses of the human genome including studies of gene number, birth and death. Notably, the human enome seems to encode only 20,000-25,000 protein-coding genes. The genome sequence reported here should serve as a firm foundation for biomedical research in the decades ahead

    Testing the relationship between confidence and effort: A behavioral finance perspective on the problem of financial literacy

    There is longstanding literature on the theoretical basis of self-confidence having motivational value, such that it increases one\u27s desire to exert effort. However, there has been little research to establish empirical evidence to validate this theory in controlled experiments, and there has yet to be any done outside these controlled settings. Our research advances literature on the topic of confidence, motivation, and effort by developing and conducting an online experiment under natural settings on a sample of 85 randomly selected participants to confirm both the role of confidence in motivating effort, and the role of information shaping and influencing confidence, and by extension effort. Our findings prove that there is a causal relationship between confidence and effort, confirming the theory of the motivational value of confidence, and that information on personal ability has a corrective effect on overconfidence which also negatively impacts the motivation to exert effort. Unexpectedly, it was also found that Gender has a role in shaping confidence and, indirectly, effort, as female participants reported significantly higher levels of confidence than male participants, which consequently reflected on their greater effort level

    Organizational resilience of Filipino live music performers during the COVID-19 pandemic

    Purpose – This study looks into the dynamic capabilities theory and its relationship to the organizational resilience of Filipino bands. Design – This research study followed a qualitative research design. A thematic analysis approach was employed to answer the research questions together with transcribed interviews, and online data. Findings – The pandemic gave live performers several obstacles. To overcome these challenges, the bands exhibited dynamic capabilities. The thematic analysis produced key themes in each of the capacities of the dynamic capabilities framework. Under sense are: Digital Transformation, Vicarious Learning, and Time Outside of Band Activities. Under seize are: Content Creation, Online Fan Engagement, and Focus on Merchandise. Under transform are: Changing the Songwriting Process and Evolving Future Outlook. Limitations – The study was limited to the experiences of the participating bands. Data gathering was also limited to online means due to pandemic-related protocols. Implications – The information gathered from the study can help live music performers in the Philippines to develop contingency plans and programs to help live music performers cope with the pandemic. This can also help business organizations, artists, and workers in the live music industry to cope with fast-changing environments and crises. Value – The research can serve as a tool to understand the dynamic capabilities of Filipino bands. It could help create awareness on the experiences of Filipino bands during the COVID-19 pandemic, and allow aspiring musicians to learn from these accounts and adapt to the current trends in the musical industry

    Analysis of heritability and shared heritability based on genome-wide association studies for 13 cancer types

    Background: Studies of related individuals have consistently demonstrated notable familial aggregation of cancer. We aim to estimate the heritability and genetic correlation attributable to the additive effects of common single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) for cancer at 13 anatomical sites. Methods: Between 2007 and 2014, the US National Cancer Institute has generated data from genome-wide association studies (GWAS) for 49 492 cancer case patients and 34 131 control patients. We apply novel mixed model methodology (GCTA) to this GWAS data to estimate the heritability of individual cancers, as well as the proportion of heritability attributable to cigarette smoking in smoking-related cancers, and the genetic correlation between pairs of cancers. Results: GWAS heritability was statistically significant at nearly all sites, with the estimates of array-based heritability, hlÂČ, on the liability threshold (LT) scale ranging from 0.05 to 0.38. Estimating the combined heritability of multiple smoking characteristics, we calculate that at least 24% (95% confidence interval [CI] = 14% to 37%) and 7% (95% CI = 4% to 11%) of the heritability for lung and bladder cancer, respectively, can be attributed to genetic determinants of smoking. Most pairs of cancers studied did not show evidence of strong genetic correlation. We found only four pairs of cancers with marginally statistically significant correlations, specifically kidney and testes (ρ = 0.73, SE = 0.28), diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) and pediatric osteosarcoma (ρ = 0.53, SE = 0.21), DLBCL and chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) (ρ = 0.51, SE =0.18), and bladder and lung (ρ = 0.35, SE = 0.14). Correlation analysis also indicates that the genetic architecture of lung cancer differs between a smoking population of European ancestry and a nonsmoking Asian population, allowing for the possibility that the genetic etiology for the same disease can vary by population and environmental exposures. Conclusion: Our results provide important insights into the genetic architecture of cancers and suggest new avenues for investigation.11 page(s
