    Multi-antikaonic nuclei in the relativistic mean-field theory

    Properties of multi-antikaonic nuclei (MKN), where several numbers of KK^- mesons are bound, are studied in the relativistic mean-field model, combined with chiral dynamics for kaonic part of the thermodynamic potential. The density profiles for nucleons and KK^- mesons, the single particle energy of the KK^- mesons, and binding energy of the MKN are obtained. The effects of the KˉKˉ\bar K-\bar K interactions on these quantities are discussed in comparison with other meson (σ\sigma, ω\omega, and ρ\rho)-exchange models. It is shown that the KˉKˉ\bar K-\bar K interactions originate from two contributions: One is the contact interaction between antikaons inherent in chiral symmetry, and the other is the one generated through coupling between the KK^- and meson mean fields. Both effects of the KˉKˉ\bar K-\bar K repulsive interactions become large on the ground state properties of the MKN as the number of the embedded KK^- mesons increases. A relation between the multi-antikaonic nuclei and kaon condensation in infinite and uniform matter is mentioned.Comment: 27 pages, 13 figure

    Asperity characteristics of the Olami-Feder-Christensen model of earthquakes

    Properties of the Olami-Feder-Christensen (OFC) model of earthquakes are studied by numerical simulations. The previous study indicated that the model exhibits ``asperity''-like phenomena, {\it i.e.}, the same region ruptures many times near periodically [T.Kotani {\it et al}, Phys. Rev. E {\bf 77}, 010102 (2008)]. Such periodic or characteristic features apparently coexist with power-law-like critical features, {\it e.g.}, the Gutenberg-Richter law observed in the size distribution. In order to clarify the origin and the nature of the asperity-like phenomena, we investigate here the properties of the OFC model with emphasis on its stress distribution. It is found that the asperity formation is accompanied by self-organization of the highly concentrated stress state. Such stress organization naturally provides the mechanism underlying our observation that a series of asperity events repeat with a common epicenter site and with a common period solely determined by the transmission parameter of the model. Asperity events tend to cluster both in time and in space

Rolland et al. use native ion mobility-mass spectrometry, kinetics experiments, and computations to reveal that b-crystallins form heterodimers. These likely assemble into compact heterooligomers that enable the very high protein concentrations found in lens tissue

    Measurement of the Superparticle Mass Spectrum in the Long-Lived Stau Scenario at the LHC

    In supersymmetric scenarios with a long-lived stau, the LHC experiments provide us with a great environment for precise mass measurements of superparticles. We study a case in which the mass differences between the lightest stau and other sleptons are about 10 GeV or larger, so that the decay products of heavier sleptons are hard enough to be detected. We demonstrate that the masses of neutralinos, sleptons, and squarks can be measured with a good accuracy.Comment: 20 pages, 6 figure
