Communicative category of politeness in German and Russian linguistic culture

Ethnic and cultural peculiarity of politeness, defined as communicative category, is revealed on the basis of associative experiment research, conducted with participation of Russian and German respondents. In the analyzed ethnic societies we have established common and nationally specific strategies of positive and negative politeness. We have come to the conclusion that studying strategies characteristics of ethnic and cultural politeness, comprising obligatory component of cross-cultural competence and providing opportunity for cooperative, conflict free communication between different linguistic cultures’ representatives is perspective

Mitigative strategies of self-evaluation in German linguoculture

The article deals with studying the strategy of mitigating the evaluation intention in potentially conflictogenic situations which traditionally include request, refusal and evaluation situations. Speech behavior of German-speaking communicants in self-evaluation situations is analyzed. Mitigative strategies correlating with the politeness maxima can be both conventional and individual representing communicants' linguocreative opportunities. Mitigative style of communications behavior is characterized by its focus on the recipient's expectation. The evaluative mitigation strategies under analysis are determined by linguocultural specificity of discourse practices of a specific ethnic society. © IDOSI Publications, 2014

Changes of connotation in borrowings

The relevance of the article is justified by the fact that answering the question on typical ways of expressing connotation in borrowed words and their connection with the history and ethnos development the presented article fills the research gap in linguistics. The objective of the article is to summarize the comparative study of semantic (primarily connotative) evolution of two words 'orda' (Mongolian 'ordu' Knan's palace, headquarters)-'ulus' borrowed from Mongolian. The principal method of the research involves semantic context analysis. The analysis consists of 3 stages. At the first stage the semantic analysis of the words in Russian National Corpus, precedent texts (proverbs, idioms, popular quotations etc.) and modern Russian dictionaries reveals the fixed connotations in the language and brings out stereotypical images in the Russian culture. The second stage focuses on Russians' individual perceptions of the words and summarizes the results of an associative experiment-respondents' reactions to the stimulus 'orda', 'ulus'. Thirdly, the semantic network analysis of the words performed on modern social media texts (chats and forums) reveals the typical semantic context of the words represented by collocations. Based on the principles of explanation, expansionism, functionalism and anthropocentrism as the main principles of modern linguistics paradigm the article might be of interest to linguists pursing research in semantics, students majoring in Linguistics and Cultural studies and teachers of Russian

The article examines the impact of the English language as an international communication agent on the nation language protecting policy in two highly-developed European countries - Germany and France. To this end, the authors make an insight into such sociolinguistic phenomena as Denglish and Franglais as a means and consequence of the globalisation process. Each of the countries and languages under study has developed its own language policy that aims at preserving its unique national heritage: language and culture. Pragmalinguistic Peculiarities of Intercultural Communication in German Speaking Switzerland

The article is devoted to the analysis of the communicative interaction of the inhabitants and the German-speaking cantons of Switzerland. Analyzed communication is complicated by a number of problems, both linguistic and cultural-conditioned. The revealed socio-cultural differences in the mutual perception of the interests of the analyzed ethnosocieties lead to the formation of stereotypes and clichés that exert their influence on communication. The revealed characteristics of the communicative style of German-speaking Switzerland made it possible to define it as a mitigative-oriented one
