    Fish fauna off sandy beaches, in an estuary, and in a seagrass bed in Hiroshima Bay, Seto Inland Sea

    From February 2015 to January 2016, we collected fish monthly using a beach seine net at two sandy beaches (B1 and B2), in a muddy sand estuary (MS), and in a seagrass bed (SG) in Hiroshima Bay, western Japan. A total of 2920 fish in 50 species were collected. The number of species, individuals, and biomass (total weight) were greater at SG and MS than at B1 and B2. The numerically most dominant species were Favonigobius gymnauchen and Tridentiger trigonocephalus at B1 and B2, F. gymnauchen and Acentrogobius sp. 2 at MS, and Plotosus japonicus and Rudarius ercodes at SG. Fish diversity also was higher at MS and SG than at B1 and B2 throughout the year. Fish assemblages and their patterns varied between sites, indicating that each habitat plays an important role as the nursery ground for different fishes

    Structural arrangement of crystalline/amorphous phases of polyethylene-block-polystyrene copolymer as induced by orientation techniques

    A polyethylene-block-polystyrene copolymer film having a bicontinuous crystalline/amorphous phases was tensile-drawn under various conditions for the structural arrangement of these phases. The prepared film could be drawn below the melting temperature of the polyethylene component, with the highest drawability obtained at 60ーC. However, the initial bicontinuous structure was gradually destroyed with increasing strain because the drawing temperature was lower than the glass-transition temperature of the polystyrene component. Correspondingly, a necking phenomenon was clearly recognizable when samples were drawn. In contrast, drawing near the melting temperature of the polyethylene component produced less orientation of both the crystalline and amorphous phases, resulting in homogeneous deformation with lower drawing stress. These results indicated that the modification of the lower ductility of the polystyrene component was key to the effective structural arrangement of both phases by tensile drawing. Here, a solvent-swelling technique was applied to improve polystyrene deformability even below its glass-transition temperature. Tensile drawing after such a treatment successfully induced the orientation of both the crystalline and amorphous phases while retaining their initial continuities. A change in the deformation type from necking to homogeneous deformation was also confirmed for the stress-strain behavior

    Distinct Cytoplasmic Expression of KL-6 Mucin in Chromophobe Renal Cell Carcinoma: A Comparative Immunohistochemical Study with Other Renal Epithelial Cell Tumors

We compared the immunohistochemical expression of sialyl glycoproteins in chromophobe RCC with that in other types of renal tumors. Formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissues of surgically resected renal tumors (chromophobe RCC, 14 cases [10 cases of classic type and 4 cases of eosinophilic variant]; oncocytoma, 7 cases; and clear cell RCC, 9 cases) and kidneys from immature infants (4 cases) were immunostained with antibodies against sialyl glycoproteins (anti-KL-6 and anti-sialyl MUC1 antibodies). Cytoplasmic expression of KL-6 and sialyl MUC1 was distinctive in the chromophobe RCC and renal oncocytoma cells, and in the intercalated cells in collecting duct epithelia. Apical-surface staining of these sialyl glycoproteins was predominantly observed in clear RCC, in the epithelia of the distal tubule and collecting duct, and in the neonatal renal proximal tubule, but not in those of the adult renal proximal tubule. The above-mentioned observations provide additional evidence for similar phenotypic profiles of chromophobe RCC and renal oncocytoma, and the intercalated cells in collecting ducts and the oncofetal expression of sialyl glycoproteins in clear cell RCC.     IgG4-related chronic rhinosinusitis: A new clinical entity of nasal disease

    Conclusion: IgG4-related disease involves nasal manifestations with chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS). This type of sinusitis is a new clinical entity of nasal disease associated with a high level of serum IgG4 for which steroid therapy is effective. Objectives. To confirm whether IgG4-related disease has distinctive chronic rhinosinusitis. Methods: We compared serum IgG4 levels as well as nasal computed tomography (CT) and clinicopathological findings before and after glucocorticoid treatment in 31 patients diagnosed as having IgG4-related disease with nasal manifestations. To evaluate immunohistochemical findings of nasal mucosa, we compared them with IgG4-related CRS and common CRS. Results: All patients had levels of high serum IgG4. Ten of the 31 patients had nasal obstruction, nasal discharge, postnasal discharge, hyposmia, and dull headache. They also demonstrated sinus lesions on radiological findings. After glucocorticoid treatment, serum IgG and IgG4 levels were markedly decreased and along with improvement of the symptoms, nasal sinus CT findings also revealed improvement of the sinus opacification. In immunohistochemical examination, the magnitude of IgG4-positive plasma cell infiltration in common CRS was almost the same as in the IgG4-related CRS group.     Utility of gastric biopsy in diagnosing IgG4‐related gastrointestinal disease

    The utility of gastric biopsy for diagnosing immunoglobulin (Ig)G4‐related gastrointestinal disease (IgG4‐GID) remains unclear. Bottom‐heavy plasmacytosis (BHP) is a distinct feature of IgG4‐GID. To clarify the feasibility of using gastric biopsies to diagnose BHP in IgG4‐GID, we analyzed the histological features and immunostaining of gastric biopsy specimens from 31 known IgG4‐related disease (IgG4‐RD) patients and we assessed the presence of BHP in 1696 consecutive routine gastric biopsies. Cases with both >10 IgG4‐positive plasma cells per high‐power field and an IgG4/IgG‐positive ratio >40% were defined as IgG4‐high. Ten of the 31 IgG4‐RD patients were concluded to have IgG4‐GID, in which IgG4‐positive plasma cells were notably detected at the deeper part of the mucosa. Six cases displayed BHP whereas the remaining four cases showed transmural infiltration with concomitant Helicobacter pylori‐associated gastritis. In addition to BHP, we identified two unique histologic features for IgG4‐GID: plasmacytic aggregation in the muscularis mucosae and permeative plasmacytic infiltration between fundic glands in the non‐atrophic mucosa. Six of the routine cases (0.35%) displayed BHP, including a case with IgG4‐RD. IgG4‐GID can be suspected by the presence of gastric biopsy specimens with characteristic histological features. Such cases are recommended to undergo further examinations to determine whether IgG4‐RD is present

    The importance of relational values in gaining people’s support and promoting their involvement in social-ecological system management: A comparative analysis

    People’s support and involvement are critical to the sustainable use and conservation of social-ecological systems (SESs). Integrating people’s values into management decisions is pivotal. Without proper integration, the resulting SES may not align with their desires and may not be supported by people. Furthermore, values can be a deep leverage point within a system that is difficult to change, as people may be more willing to be involved in activities that support what they value. Recent studies have illustrated the importance of relational values as the third value class (in addition to instrumental and intrinsic). Relational values are preferences, principles, and virtues associated with human-nature relationships. Although studies on relational values are available, empirical studies, particularly studies about the usefulness of relational values in promoting pro-SES behavior, are rare. Consequently, our study administered questionnaires to residents in three SESs in Japan (N = 864, 1136, and 1000, respectively) to understand how relational values impact people’s support and involvement in SES management as measured by pro-SES behavior scales. In addition, due to the lack of pro-SES behavior measurements, we developed measurement items and a development guideline. Our findings support previous theoretical discussions positing that relational values are critical as a single value class or as part of the plural values and need to be integrated into SES management decisions to gain people’s support. Furthermore, our study demonstrated that cultivating relational values could promote pro-SES behavior to realize a desirable state of SES. Although from the viewpoint of residents, relational values overlapped with instrumental and intrinsic values; however, as per theoretical discussions, the results indicated that relational values were important in their own right as they were well associated with pro-SES behavior scales. The findings were similar across the three SESs, with different social-ecological characteristics. In summary, managers must integrate relational values into management decisions to gain people’s support and should cultivate relational values to promote pro-SES behavior, in order to realize a desirable state of SES

    A Case of Primary Signet-Ring Cell/Histiocytoid Carcinoma of the Eyelid: Immunohistochemical Comparison With the Normal Sweat Gland and Review of the Literature

    Primary signet-ring cell/histiocytoid carcinomas of the eyelid are extremely rare tumors considered to originate from sweat glands. Here, we report the case of a 72-year-old man diagnosed with primary signet-ring cell/histiocytoid carcinoma of the eyelid and present immunohistochemical analyses of the eyelid apocrine gland (Moll gland) and apocrine and eccrine sweat glands of perineum and axilla. Widespread infiltration of tumor cells with signet-ring cell or histiocytoid appearance was observed in his left eyelid, orbit, and periocular lesion. Tumor cells expressed mucins and showed immunoreactivity that was similar to that of the Moll gland: MUC6 (+), GlcNAc alpha 1 -> 4Gal -> R(-), MUC2(-), MUC5AC(-), GCDFP15(+), CD15(+), S100(-), CK7(+), CK20(-), ER(+), PgR (+), HER2(-), E-cadherin(+), p63(-), PSA(-), and TTF-1(-). The tumor cells differed from those of perineal and axillary apocrine and eccrine sweat glands, which were MUC6(-). The Moll gland was ER(-) and PgR(-), whereas perineal and axillar apocrine sweat glands were ER(+) and PgR(+), and perineal and axillary eccrine sweat glands were ER(+) and PgR(-). The tumor showed characteristics similar to that of the eyelid Moll gland, which is demonstrated to be an apocrine gland with a protein expression distinct from that of other apocrine glands. MUC6 and GCDFP15 expression are useful in identifying the Moll gland immunophenotype and GCDFP15, ER and PgR expression are useful in distinguishing primary eyelid signet-ring/histocytoid carcinoma from gastrointestinal malignancies.ArticleAMERICAN JOURNAL OF DERMATOPATHOLOGY. 34(8):E139-E145 (2012)journal articl

    Successful Treatment of Cardiac Diffuse Large B-cell Lymphoma : A Report of Two Cases

    Cardiac lymphoma is a rare neoplasm of the heart,defined as an extranodal lymphoma exclusively located in the heart and/or pericardium. Multiple imaging modalities may help to diagnose cardiac tumors ; however, pathological diagnosis is difficult because of the limited approaches for obtaining tissue samples. This report describes two cases of prompt histological diagnosis of cardiac lymphoma as diffuse large B-cell type and their successful treatment with chemotherapy. Immunohistochemical analyses revealed one case as CD5-positive and the other as CD5-negative lymphoma. This report highlights the necessity of histological diagnosis and the importance of clinicopathological characterization of cardiac lymphoma.
