OPTICAL QPSK SIGNAL QUALITY DEGRADATION DUE TO PHASE ERROR OF PUMP LIGHT
The influence of pump phase error on phase-sensitive optical amplifier (PSA) repeaters and the waveform degradation due to chromatic dispersion and fiber nonlinearities in the optical multi-relay transmission of quadrature phase-shift keying phase-conjugated twin waves are considered theoretically. First, the influence of noise from the pump phase error, optical local oscillator, receiver, and the amplified spontaneous-emission (ASE) in PSA repeaters is investigated with the assumption that transmission fibers are linear lossy channels. The bit-error rate (BER) is estimated as a function of the signal-to-noise ratio, and the relationship between the number of transmission relays and the fiber launch power is clarified. Waveform degradation due to chromatic dispersion and the optical fiber nonlinearities in transmission fibers are investigated with the noiseless condition, and the maximum repeatable number as a function of the fiber launch power is calculated. Finally, we show the relationship among the maximum repeatable number, standard deviation of pump phase error in PSA repeaters, and the fiber launch power to clarify the optimum transmission condition with consideration of the noise and the waveform degradation
Inferring pure context-free languages from positive data
We study the possibilities to infer pure context-free languages from positive data. We can show that while the whole class of pure context-free languages is not inferable from positive data, it has interesting subclasses which have the desired inference property. We study uniform pure languages, i.e., languages generated by pure grammars obeying restrictions on the length of the right hand sides of their productions, and pure languages generated by deterministic pure grammars
Ultra-high-purity iron is a novel and very compatible biomaterial
Metals and alloys are used widely in bone prosthetic materials, stents and dental tissue reconstructions. The most common materials are stainless steels and cobalt-chromium-nickel and titanium alloys. These alloys can be easily deformed but are hard to break. However, their affinity for cells and tissues is very low. In addition, they can sometimes provoke unexpected metal allergies. Iron is an abundant trace element essential for humans. However, excess amounts in particular of Fe2+ ions are toxic. We previously succeeded in obtaining 99.9996% ultra-high-purity iron (ABIKO iron). The chemical properties of ABIKO iron are completely different from that of conventional pure iron. For example, the reaction rate in hydrochloric acid is very slow and there is barely any corrosion. Here, we found that, in the absence of any type of coating, mammalian cells could easily attach to, and normally proliferate and differentiate on, ABIKO iron. On the other hand, cell densities and proliferation rate of the surfaces of plates made from CoâCrâMo or Tiâ6Alâ4V were significantly reduced. In addition, several stress and iron response genes, HSP70, SOD1, ATM and IRP2 did not change in the cells on ABIKO iron, while these genes were induced with exogenous application of FeSO4. Cells also secreted and fastened some organics on ABIKO iron. In vitro collagen binding assay showed that ABIKO iron binds higher amount of collagens. These findings highlight ABIKO iron as a novel biocompatible prosthetic material
Seismic refraction and wide-angle reflection exploration by JARE-43 on Mizuho Plateau, East Antarctica
The 43rd Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition (JARE-43) carried out seismic exploration experiments on Mizuho Plateau,East Antarctica,in the austral summer season of ,2001-2002. The exploration was composed of seven large explosions and 161seismic stations distributed along the 151 km-long seismic line. The first arrival time data are analyzed by a refraction method. It is found that the ice sheet is composed of two layers:the upper layer with P wave velocity of 2.7-2.9 km/s has thickness of 35-45 m,and the lower layer with P wave velocity of 3.7-3.9 km/s continues to the bedrock.Lateral velocity variation in the upper-most crust is revealed:P wave velocity for the upper-most crust in the southern and central parts is 6.1-6.2 km/s and that in the northern part is5.9 km/s. This result implies that the geological boundary observed along the coast in the Lu tzow-Holm Bay and Prince Olav Coast regions possibly continues to the inland area. The S wave velocity is also obtained to be roughly 3.5km/s for the whole upper-most crust.Travel time analysis of two distinct reflection phases shows two horizontal reflecting planes located at 19 and 40km depth; the latter corresponds to the Moho discontinuity
Biogeography and evolution of the Carassius auratus-complex in East Asia
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p><it>Carassius auratus </it>is a primary freshwater fish with bisexual diploid and unisexual gynogenetic triploid lineages. It is distributed widely in Eurasia and is especially common in East Asia. Although several genetic studies have been conducted on <it>C. auratus</it>, they have not provided clear phylogenetic and evolutionary descriptions of this fish, probably due to selection bias in sampling sites and the DNA regions analysed. As the first step in clarifying the evolutionary entity of the world's <it>Carassius </it>fishes, we attempted to clarify the phylogeny of <it>C. auratus </it>populations distributed in East Asia.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We conducted a detailed analysis of a large dataset of mitochondrial gene sequences [<it>CR</it>, 323 bp, 672 sequences (528 sequenced + 144 downloaded); <it>CR </it>+ <it>ND4 </it>+ <it>ND5 </it>+ <it>cyt b</it>, 4669 bp in total, 53 sequences] obtained from <it>C. auratus </it>in East Asia. Our phylogeographic analysis revealed two superlineages, one distributed mainly among the Japanese main islands and the other in various regions in and around the Eurasian continent, including the Ryukyus and Taiwan. The two superlineages include seven lineages with high regional specificity that are composed of endemic populations indigenous to each region. The divergence time of the seven lineages was estimated to be 0.2 million years ago (Mya) by a fossil-based method and 1.0-1.9 Mya by the molecular clock method. The antiquity and endemism of these lineages suggest that they are native to their respective regions, although some seem to have been affected by the artificial introduction of <it>C. auratus </it>belonging to other lineages. Triploids of <it>C. auratus </it>did not form a monophyletic lineage but were clustered mostly with sympatric diploids.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The results of the present study revealed the existence of two superlineages of <it>C. auratus </it>in East Asia that include seven lineages endemic to each of the seven regions examined. The lack of substantial genetic separation between triploids and diploids indicates that triploids are not composed of a single independent lineage. The ancient origins and evolutionary uniqueness of the seven lineages warrant their conservation. An overall phylogenetic framework obtained from the present study will be of use for estimating the phylogenetic relationships of <it>Carassius </it>fishes on the Eurasian continent.</p
Well-Differentiated Liposarcoma, an Atypical Lipomatous Tumor, of the Mesentery: A Case Report and Review of the Literature
Mesenteric liposarcoma is a rare neoplasm. Here, we report the case of a 73-year-old Japanese man with a well-differentiated (WD) liposarcoma of the mesentery. Due to rapid growth of the abdominal mass and abdominal insufficiency, a tumorectomy was performed. The excised tumor was 12.4 Ă 9.6 cm in size and weighed 548 g. Cut sections showed a lobulated yellow and/or grayish-colored appearance. The histological features were predominantly those of the sclerotic and lipoma-like variants of WD liposarcoma. The cytoplasm of most spindle cells was diffusely immunoreactive for CD34, while fat cells were positive for S-100 protein. Some spindle cell nuclei were positive for CDK4, and a few were positive for MDM2. The average Ki-67 proliferation index in tumor cells was 10%, and androgen receptor expression was detected in tumor cell nuclei. The present case and 11 cases identified from a literature search were reviewed. The WD mesenteric liposarcomas developed in patients in the fourth to seventh decades of life (mean age 57.9 years). The patients consisted of 7 men and 5 women. All tumors were larger than 10 cm in diameter at the time of surgery. Complete resection might be the only curative therapy for WD liposarcomas of the mesentery, but long-term follow-up is needed because of the possibility of a local recurrence of the tumor
Reimei Satellite Observations of AlfvĂ©nic Interaction Modulating InvertedâV Electrons and Filamentary Auroral Forms at the Poleward Edge of a Discrete Arc
We present an event based on Reimei satellite observations in the low-altitude midnight auroral region, showing that intense and clear energy-dispersed electron precipitations, repetitively generated by field-aligned accelerations due to dispersive Alfvén waves, were modulating inverted-V electrons. These Alfvénic electrons had peak energies equal to or slightly larger than those of the inverted-Vs and were associated with the filamentary auroral forms rapidly streaming at the poleward edge of a broad discrete arc. This arc was caused by the inverted-V accompanied by ion depletions produced by quasi-electrostatic parallel potential drop. Assuming instantaneous electron accelerations over a wide energy range in a single location and a simple time-of-flight effect for the energy-time dispersions, the Alfvénic source distances were estimated 1, 500 ± 500 km above the satellite altitude of -- 676 km, a lower bound since the interaction locations are realistically distributed in altitudinally extended regions. The electron characteristics in detailed energy-pitch angle distributions obtained at high time resolution can be categorized into: (a) original inverted-V fluxes energized by quasi-electrostatic upward electric field, (b) accelerated and decelerated/reduced inverted-V fluxes, (c) field-aligned energy-dispersed precipitations accelerated by dispersive Alfvén waves, and (d) upwelling secondary components effectively produced by the field-aligned precipitations particularly at energies of a few tens of eV. This event is useful to reveal the interactions between the inverted-V and Alfvénic electrons and their related ionospheric effects in the magnetosphere-ionosphere coupling processes. The detailed energy-pitch angle distributions presented here provide constraints for models of these interactions and processes
Classifying breast masses in volumetric whole breast ultrasound data: a 2.5-dimensional approach
The aim of this paper is to investigate a 2.5-dimensional approach in
classifying masses as benign or malignant in volumetric anisotropic voxel
whole breast ultrasound data. In this paper, the term 2.5-dimensional refers to
the use of a series of 2-dimensional images. While mammography is very
effective in breast cancer screening in general, it is less sensitive in detecting
breast cancer in younger women or women with dense breasts. Breast
ultrasonography does not have the same limitation and is a valuable adjunct in
breast cancer detection. The current study focuses on a new 2.5-dimensional approach in analyzing the
volumetric whole breast ultrasound data for mass classification
Impairment of bimanual in-phase movement during recovery from frontal lobe tumor surgery: a case report
The mechanisms underlying bimanual coordination have not yet been fully elucidated. Here, we evaluated the clinical features of bimanual movement impairment in a patient following surgery for a frontal lobe tumor. The patient was an 80-year-old man who had undergone subtotal tumor resection for a tumor in the right superior frontal gyrus. Histological examination of the resected specimen led to the diagnosis of malignant lymphoma of the diffuse large B-cell type, and the patient subsequently received high-dose methotrexate-based chemotherapy. Postoperatively, the patient had difficulty with bimanual movement, and on the 5th postoperative day we found that the impairment could not be attributed to weakness. Temporal changes in the characteristics of manual movements were analyzed. Bimanual diadochokinesis (opening/closing of the hands, pronation/supination of the forearms, and sequential finger movements) was more disturbed than unilateral movements; in-phase movements were more severely impaired than anti-phase movements. Bimanual movement performance was better when cued using an auditory metronome. On the 15th postoperative day, movements improved. The present observations show that in addition to the disturbance of anti-phase bimanual movements, resection of the frontal lobe involving the supplementary motor area (SMA) and premotor cortex (PMC) can cause transient impairment of in-phase bimanual diadochokinesis, which can be more severe than the impairment of anti-phase movements. The effect of auditory cueing on bimanual skills may be useful in the diagnosis of anatomical localization of the superior frontal gyrus and functional localization of the SMA and PMC and in rehabilitation of patients with brain tumors, as in the case of degenerative movement disorders
The Possible Role of TASK Channels in Rank-Ordered Recruitment of Motoneurons in the Dorsolateral Part of the Trigeminal Motor Nucleus.
Because a rank-ordered recruitment of motor units occurs during isometric contraction of jaw-closing muscles, jaw-closing motoneurons (MNs) may be recruited in a manner dependent on their soma sizes or input resistances (IRs). In the dorsolateral part of the trigeminal motor nucleus (dl-TMN) in rats, MNs abundantly express TWIK (two-pore domain weak inwardly rectifying K channel)-related acid-sensitive-K(+) channel (TASK)-1 and TASK3 channels, which determine the IR and resting membrane potential. Here we examined how TASK channels are involved in IR-dependent activation/recruitment of MNs in the rat dl-TMN by using multiple methods. The real-time PCR study revealed that single large MNs (>35 ÎŒm) expressed TASK1 and TASK3 mRNAs more abundantly compared with single small MNs (15-20 ÎŒm). The immunohistochemistry revealed that TASK1 and TASK3 channels were complementarily distributed in somata and dendrites of MNs, respectively. The density of TASK1 channels seemed to increase with a decrease in soma diameter while there were inverse relationships between the soma size of MNs and IR, resting membrane potential, or spike threshold. Dual whole-cell recordings obtained from smaller and larger MNs revealed that the recruitment of MNs depends on their IRs in response to repetitive stimulation of the presumed Ia afferents. 8-Bromoguanosine-cGMP decreased IRs in small MNs, while it hardly changed those in large MNs, and subsequently decreased the difference in spike-onset latency between the smaller and larger MNs, causing a synchronous activation of MNs. These results suggest that TASK channels play critical roles in rank-ordered recruitment of MNs in the dl-TMN
