    Plant Species Diversity along a Precipitation Gradient in Temperate Grasslands of China and Mongolia

    Variations in species diversity can be linked to several ecological gradients (Huston 1994). Plant functional type is characterized by an adaption of plants to certain ecological conditions (Galan de Mera et al. 1999). In addition, patterns of species richness along an environmental gradient might be more interpretable by considering both species richness of different functional types and total species richness (Pausas and Austin 2001). Water availability generally signifies total precipitation available to support plant growth (Adler and Levine 2007), and its temporal distribution is the main driver of species composition and species diversity in arid and semi-arid environments (Shmida and Wilson 1985; Kutiel et al. 2000). Therefore, understanding how precipitation influences species diversity at a spatial scale will be critical for predicting the impacts of altered precipitation on vegetation patterns.     Obesity and the risk of diabetes mellitus in middle-aged Japanese men.

    The morbidity of diabetes mellitus is increasing gradually in Japanese populations. It is important to clarify the risk factors of diabetes in Japanese populations in order to take adequate measures against the increasing morbidity of diabetes. In order to evaluate the link between past and concurrent obesity and diabetes in middle-aged Japanese men, we conducted a worksite-based historical cohort study in Okayama, Japan in 1999. Annual health examination data of middle-aged male workers in a worksite were collected. The relative risks of past and concurrent obesity for developing diabetes were calculated. Subjects with a past history of obesity at between 40 and 50 years of age had a significantly higher risk of developing diabetes by age 55 than did subjects in the normal weight group. These results suggest that, in order to prevent diabetes in middle-aged Japanese men, health guidance for normal weight maintenance should be provided not only for middle-aged men, but also for men under age 40.</p

    推量アプローチを求める問題がリスニングテストに占める割合

    話し手の意向を推量する能力は、コミュニケーションを円滑に行うためには不可欠である。今回の調査で明らかになったTOEFLと英語検定の推量型会話問題の占める割合における有意差の存在は、我が国の、実際のコミュニケーション場面を想定しないリスニング学習の在り方を露呈させた。我が国では、話し手の意向を推量する能力に対して、語彙や文法の知識に対してほど関心は払われず、推量の能力を育成するリスニング指導は体系的に行われてこなかった。国際社会に通用するコミュニケーション能力を育成するためには、リスニング学習における推量アプローチによる活動の比重を高めていくべきであろう

    Distributed Intelligence の概念と外国語教育への適用

    The transformation from the Industrial Age to the Information Age has brought in a so-called "Distributed Intelligence" (DI), a new concept for educational psychology. DI believes intelligence is being shared by individuals, and all the human and nonhuman resources they use. The application of this concept to foreign language teaching, however, remains murky. New teaching methodologies following the policy of Communicative Language Teaching has appeared since the 1980s. Among them, Community-Based Learning (CBL) has something in common with DI from a philosophical point of view, though CBL is only a small stream in the field. The purpose of this paper is : 1) to discuss the evolution of the old learning theory to the new one : 2) to clarify the differences between CBL and the Audio-Lingul Approach which is based on the old learning theory, and : 3) to examine the characteristics of CBL through its practices. The discussion shows behaviorism has limitations in the new learning environment and CBL has much potentiality as an effective teaching methodology to promote foreign language learning in the Information Age
