Evolution of the public opinion on COVID-19 vaccination in Japan
Vaccines are promising tools to control the spread of COVID-19. An effective
vaccination campaign requires government policies and community engagement,
sharing experiences for social support, and voicing concerns to vaccine safety
and efficiency. The increasing use of online social platforms allows us to
trace large-scale communication and infer public opinion in real-time. We
collected more than 100 million vaccine-related tweets posted by 8 million
users and used the Latent Dirichlet Allocation model to perform automated topic
modeling of tweet texts during the vaccination campaign in Japan. We identified
15 topics grouped into 4 themes on Personal issue, Breaking news, Politics, and
Conspiracy and humour. The evolution of the popularity of themes revealed a
shift in public opinion, initially sharing the attention over personal issues
(individual aspect), collecting information from the news (knowledge
acquisition), and government criticisms, towards personal experiences once
confidence in the vaccination campaign was established. An interrupted time
series regression analysis showed that the Tokyo Olympic Games affected public
opinion more than other critical events but not the course of the vaccination.
Public opinion on politics was significantly affected by various events,
positively shifting the attention in the early stages of the vaccination
campaign and negatively later. Tweets about personal issues were mostly
retweeted when the vaccination reached the younger population. The associations
between the vaccination campaign stages and tweet themes suggest that the
public engagement in the social platform contributed to speedup vaccine uptake
by reducing anxiety via social learning and support
Morphological evidence for an invasion-independent metastasis pathway exists in multiple human cancers
BACKGROUND: We have previously described an alternative invasion-independent pathway of cancer metastasis in a murine mammary tumor model. This pathway is initiated by intravasation of tumor nests enveloped by endothelial cells of sinusoidal vasculature within the tumor. In this study, we examined whether evidence for the invasion-independent pathway of metastasis is present in human cancers. METHODS: Archival specimens of 10 common types of human cancers were examined for the presence of sinusoidal vasculature enveloping tumor nests and subsequently generated endothelial-covered tumor emboli in efferent veins. RESULTS: A percentage of tumor emboli in all cancers was found to be enveloped by endothelial cells, but these structures were particularly prevalent in renal cell carcinomas, hepatocellular carcinomas and follicular thyroid carcinomas. A common feature of the vasculature in these tumors was the presence of dilated sinusoid-like structures surrounding tumor nests. A high mean vascular area within tumors, an indication of sinusoidal vascular development, was significantly related to the presence of endothelial-covered tumor emboli. CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that an invasion-independent metastatic pathway is possible in a wide variety of human cancers. Further investigation of this phenomenon may present new therapeutic strategies for the amelioration of cancer metastasis
Lack of association between the CARD10 rs6000782 polymorphism and type 1 autoimmune hepatitis in a Japanese population
Background: Previous genome-wide association studies have evaluated the impact of common genetic variants and identified several non-HLA risk loci associated with autoimmune liver diseases. More recent genome-wide association studies and replication analyses reported an association between variants of the CARD10 polymorphism rs6000782 and risk of type 1 autoimmune hepatitis (AIH). In this case-control study, we genotyped 326 Japanese AIH patients and 214 control subjects. Results: Genomic DNA from 540 individuals of Japanese origin, including 326 patients with type-1 AIH and 214 healthy controls, was analyzed for two single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the CARD10 gene. We selected CARD10 rs6000782 SNPs and genotyped these using PCR-RFLP method and direct sequencing. The Chi square test revealed that the rs6000782 variant alle (c) was not associated with the susceptibility for AIH in a Japanese population [p = 0.376, odds ratio (OR) 1.271, 95 % confidence interval (CI) 0.747-2.161] in an allele model. Our data also showed that CARD10 rs6000782 variants were not associated with AIH or with the clinical parameters of AIH. Conclusions: In this study we examined an association between rs6000782 SNPs in the CARD10 gene and type-1 AIH. Results showed no significant association of rs62000782 with type-1 AIH in a Japanese population. This study demonstrated no association between CARD10 rs6000782 variants and AIH in a Japanese population
Further extensions of characterizations of chaotic order associated with Kantorovich type inequalities (Operator Inequalities and Related Area)
FURTHER EXTENSIONS OF CHARACTERIZATIONS OF CHAOTIC ORDER ASSOCIATED WITH KANTOROVICH TYPE INEQUALITIES
Abstract. We showed characterizations of chaotic order via Kantorovich inequality in our previous paper. Recently as a nice application of generalized Furuta inequality, Furuta and Seo showed an extension of one of our results and a related result on operator equations. In this paper, by using essentially the same idea as theirs, we shall show further extensions of both their results and the following our another previous result which is a characterization of chaotic order via Specht's ratio. "Let A and B be positive invertible operators satisfyin
Clinical features of outpatients with somatization symptoms treated at a Japanese psychosomatic medicine clinic
Abstract Background Somatization is produced due to the summation of psychological factors, irrespective of the presence or absence of physical factors. A group of diseases with severe pain and other disorders exhibit so-called Medically Unexplained Symptoms (MUS), and the characteristics of patients with MUS are largely unexplained. In this paper, the characteristics of a series of new patients with somatization treated in a Japanese university hospital are discussed. Method The subjects were 871 patients who newly visited the Department of Psychosomatic Medicine, Toho University Omori Medical Center between January and December of 2015. Under the assumption that the definition of somatization is same as that of MUS, the correlation between somatization and the age, sex, academic background, chief complaints, reasons for visiting the medical center, diagnosis, symptoms, presence or absence of a referral form, continued treatment after the first visit, and marital status of these patients at the time of their respective examinations were evaluated. Results Of the patients studied, 68% suffered from somatization. Among them, 11% met the definition of Functional Somatic Symptoms (FSS) and 74% had somatization associated with mood disorder or anxiety disorder. Digestive symptoms were reported by 33%, headaches by 24%, and unusual sensations by 21%. Whereas no correlation was found between somatization symptoms and the patients’ academic background, marital history, or medical history after the first visit, a positive correlation (p < 0.05) was found between somatization and patients who had been referred by their doctor. Conclusion Many of the studied patients who suffered from somatization, regardless of age and sex, were referred to us by doctors from other hospitals. It was concluded that many patients difficult to diagnose or deal with are referred the Department of Psychosomatic Medicine of Japanese university hospitals, thus these hospitals must assume great responsibility for preventing mistaken diagnoses by conducting effective psychological treatment and thorough medical examinations
Corrosion-Resistant Amorphous Alloy Ribbons for Electromagnetic Filtration of Iron Rusts from Water
An attempt was made to use corrosion-resistant amorphous Fe-9Cr-13P-7C alloy ribbons as an electromagnetic filter material for trapping various iron rusts suspended in water at 40℃. The ferrimagnetic Fe_3O_4 rust was trapped with the 100% efficiency and paramagnetic rusts such as α-Fe_2O_3, α-FeOOH and amorphous ferric oxyhydroxide were trapped with certain efficiencies at the magnetic field strength of 0.5-10 kOe. The regeneration of the filter by back-washing was easy. The trapping capacity of electromagnetic filter was proportional to the edge length of the filter material where the high magnetic field strength existed. Therefore, melt-spun thin and narrow amorphous alloy ribbons having the high corrosion resistance have the potential utility as electromagnetic filter material
A Partition-Based Heuristic Algorithm for the Rectilinear Block Packing Problem
This paper focuses on a two-dimensional strip packing problem where a set of arbitrarily shaped rectilinear blocks need be packed into a larger rectangular container without overlap. A rectilinear block is a polygonal block whose interior angles are either 90∘or 270∘. This problem involves many industrial applications, such as VLSI design, timber/glass cutting, and newspaper layout. We generalized a bottom-left and a best-fit algorithms to the rectilinear block packing problem in our previous paper. Based on the analysis of the strength and weakness of these algorithms, we propose a new construction heuristic algorithm called the partition-based best-fit algorithm (PBF algorithm), which takes advantages of both the bottom-left and the best-fit algorithms. The basic idea of the PBF algorithm is that it partitions all the items into groups and then packs the items in a group-by-group manner. The best-fit algorithm is taken as the internal tactics for each group. The proposed algorithm is tested on a series of instances, which are generated from benchmark instances. The computational results show that the proposed algorithm significantly improves the performance of the existing construction heuristic algorithms and is especially effective for the instances having large differences in the sizes of given shapes
