A primary aorto-duodenal fistula associated with an inflammatory abdominal aortic aneurysm: a case report.

    Get PDF
Primary aorto-enteric fistula (PAEF)is a serious complication of abdominal aortic aneurysm(AAA). We report a patient with PAEF associated with inflammatory AAA who underwent emergent surgery. A 52-year-old male presented with recurrent hematemesis. A computer tomography scan showed a sealed rupture of the AAA adjacent to the duodenum. At surgery, a coin-sized PAEF was noted. The aorta was replaced with a Dacron graft in situ . Histological examination revealed the characteristics of an inflammatory AAA. The postoperative course was uneventful, and there has been no evidence of infection during a follow-up period of 3 years. We discuss the etiologic and surgical considerations regarding this unusual entity.</p

Development of gelatin hydrogel nonwoven fabrics (Genocel®) as a novel skin substitute in murine skin defects

    Get PDF
Introduction: Genocel is an emerging material, used in cell culture, with high mechanical strength and good cytocompatibility. Based on these characteristics, Genocel is considered a promising skin substitute for wound healing. In this study, we explored the possibility of using Genocel as a skin substitute for murine skin defects and compared it with a conventional skin substitute. Methods: Sheets of Genocel and Pelnac were applied to skin defects created on the backs of mice. On days 7, 14, and 21, the remaining wound area was evaluated and specimens were harvested for HE, Azan, anti-CD31, CD68, and CD163 staining to assess neoepithelialization, granulation tissue, capillary formation, and macrophage infiltration. Results: No significant differences in the wound area or neoepithelium length were observed between groups. The number of newly formed capillaries in the Genocel group was significantly higher than that in the Pelnac group on day 7 (p < 0.05). In contrast, granulation tissue formation in the Pelnac group was greater than that in the Genocel group on day 14 (p < 0.05). Regarding macrophage infiltration, the pan-macrophage number, M2 macrophage number, and M2 ratio in the Pelnac group were higher than those in the Genocel group on day 14 (p < 0.05). In other aspects, the two materials displayed comparable behavior. Conclusions: Genocel can be used as a skin substitute equivalent to the conventional one. In addition, Genocel accelerated capillary formation, which is more appropriate than conventional treatments for chronic skin ulcers, such as diabetic ulcers

Impact of deposition pressure and two-step growth technique on the photoresponsivity enhancement of polycrystalline BaSi2 films formed by sputtering

    Get PDF
We investigate the influence of deposition pressure in the range 0.25–1.0 Pa on the photoresponsivity of 200 nm thick BaSi2 films grown by sputtering at 600 °C. BaSi2 films formed at 0.8 Pa exhibit a high photoresponsivity. The deposited Ba-to-Si atomic ratio depends significantly on the sputtering pressure. That\u27s why the pressure influences the photoresponsivity. BaSi2 films grown by a two-step growth technique show much higher photoresponsivity almost equivalent to those grown by molecular beam epitaxy. The photoresponsivity reaches 0.75 A W−1 at 2.0 eV at a bias voltage of 0.5 V applied between the top and bottom electrode

Significant photoresponsivity enhancement of polycrystalline BaSi2 films formed on heated Si(111) substrates by sputtering

We fabricated approximately 200-nm-thick BaSi2 films on Si(111) substrates at 600 °C. The formation of BaSi2 was demonstrated by X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. A reduction in the electron concentration (n = 2 × 1016 cm−3) by 3 orders of magnitude compared to that previously reported (n = 7 × 1019 cm−3) and resultant photoresponsivity enhancement by more than two orders of magnitude were achieved. The photoresponsivity increased with the bias voltage V bias applied between the top and bottom electrodes, and reached approximately 0.19 A/W at 2.0 eV, room temperature, and |V bias| = 0.5 V

Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) analysis of primary ocular adnexal MALT lymphoma

    Get PDF
BACKGROUND: It remains unknown whether primary ocular adnexal extranodal marginal zone B-cell lymphoma of mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT lymphoma) is a homogeneous entity, as there are few reports of the results of cytogenetic or molecular analyses of these tumors. METHODS: We performed interphase fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) analysis to detect translocations and aneuploidy in 34 cases of primary ocular adnexal MALT lymphoma, and reviewed the histopathological findings. Correlations between the results of FISH analysis, the histopathological features and the clinical data were also analyzed. RESULTS: Among the 34 cases, FISH analysis revealed t(14;18)(q32;q21) in one case, trisomy 3 in 21 cases (62%), and trisomy 18 in 16 cases (47%). The cases with trisomy 18 had significantly more prominent lymphoepithelial lesions (LELs) and less nodularity in the tumors. In regard to the clinical correlations, tumors with trisomy 18 were observed predominantly in females and younger patients; also, in the majority of the cases, the tumor was of conjunctival origin. All the cases with recurrence showed trisomy 18 in the tumor. CONCLUSION: Primary ocular adnexal MALT lymphoma is a significantly heterogeneous entity. Cases with trisomy 18 may have unique clinicopathological features

Functional Fv fragment of an antibody specific for CD28: Fv-mediated co-stimulation of T cells

    Get PDF
AbstractThe most predominant co-stimulation pathway, which is critical for T cell activation and proliferation, is the CD28-B7 pathway. The anti-CD28 monoclonal antibody (mAb) also provides a co-stimulatory signal to T cells. In order to construct a functional Fv fragment (complex of VH and VL domains) of anti-CD28 antibody using a bacterial expression system, cDNA encoding the variable regions of immunoglobulin from 15E8 hybridoma cells was cloned and expressed in Escherichia coli. The Fv fragment was obtained as a soluble protein from the periplasmic fraction and showed a binding pattern similar to parental IgG. The Fv fragment induced proliferation of peripheral blood mononuclear cells in the presence of anti-CD3 or anti-CD2 mAb and enhanced anti-tumor activity of anti-MUC1×anti-CD3 bispecific antibody when tested with lymphokine-activated killer cells with T cell phenotype. Thus, the anti-CD28 Fv fragment will be promising not only for the study of co-stimulation, but also for cancer immunotherapy
