    Epitaxial growth of FeSe0.5_{0.5}Te0.5_{0.5} thin films on CaF2_2 substrates with high critical current density

    In-situ epitaxial growth of FeSe0.5_{0.5}Te0.5_{0.5} thin films is demonstrated on a non-oxide substrate CaF2_2. Structural analysis reveals that compressive stress is moderately added to 36-nm thick FeSe0.5_{0.5}Te0.5_{0.5}, which pushes up the critical temperature above 15 K, showing higher values than that of bulk crystals. Critical current density at TT = 4.5 K reaches 5.9 x 104^4 Acm2^{-2} at μ0H\mu_0H = 10 T, and 4.2 x 104^4 Acm2^{-2} at μ0H\mu_0H = 14 T. These results indicate that fluoride substrates have high potential for the growth of iron-based superconductors in comparison with popular oxide substrates.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures, to be published in Applied Physics Express 4, 053101 (2011

    Importance of oral food challenge and identification of atopic dermatitis in child with Netherton syndrome: A case report

    Children with Netherton syndrome are likely to be sensitized to multiple allergens due to skin barrier dysfunction. Owing to substantial increases in total and food allergen-specific IgE levels, some children with Netherton syndrome are diagnosed with food allergies (FAs) and advised to avoid particular foods. However, it is unclear whether such children actually have FAs. We report a child with Netherton syndrome without atopic dermatitis (AD) who was able to stop avoiding certain foods (hens’ eggs and peanuts) after undergoing oral food challenge (OFC). A 5-year-old Japanese boy with Netherton syndrome without AD consulted at our hospital to evaluate the possibility of allergies to hens’ eggs and peanuts. Netherton syndrome had been diagnosed at birth. At 1 year old, the levels of specific IgE for egg white and peanuts were >100 and 14.6kU/l, respectively. He had not consumed or experienced allergic symptoms to these foods. However, he was instructed to completely avoid these foods in his diet. At 5 years old, he still completely avoided these foods. The levels of specific IgE for egg white, ovomucoid, and peanuts were 34.5, 9.4, and 17.4kU/l, respectively. Since the serum-specific IgE levels and the serum-specific IgE/total IgE ratio decreased, we performed OFCs for hens’ eggs and peanuts. The results of the OFCs using half a baked egg and 10g of peanuts were all negative. The same dosing schedule was repeated at home, again with negative results. Therefore, the avoidance could be stopped. This report suggests that we should identify whether patients have AD or not, and OFCs should be performed before requesting food restriction in patients with Netherton syndrome

    Photoacoustic in vivo 3D imaging of tumor using a highly tumor-targeting probe under high-threshold conditions

    Three-dimensional (3D) representation of a tumor with respect to its size, shape, location, and boundaries is still a challenge in photoacoustic (PA) imaging using artificial contrast agents as probes. We carried out PA imaging of tumors in mice using 800RS-PMPC, which was obtained by coupling of 800RS, a near-infrared cyanine dye, with PMPC, a highly selective tumor-targeting methacrylate polymer having phosphorylcholine side chains, as a probe. The conjugate 800RS-PMPC forms compact nanoparticles (dDLS = 14.3 nm), retains the biocompatibility of the parent polymer (PMPC) and exhibits unprecedented PA performance. When applied to mice bearing a 6 × 3 × 3 mm3 tumor buried 6 mm beneath the skin, the probe 800RS-PMPC selectively accumulates in the tumor and emits PA signals that are strong enough to be unambiguously distinguished from noise signals of endogenous blood/hemoglobin. The PA image thus obtained under high-threshold conditions allows 3D characterization of the tumor in terms of its size, shape, location, and boundaries

    Exploring the capability of mayenite (12CaO·7Al₂O₃) as hydrogen storage material

    We utilized nanoporous mayenite (12CaO·7Al₂O₃), a cost-effective material, in the hydride state (H⁻) to explore the possibility of its use for hydrogen storage and transportation. Hydrogen desorption occurs by a simple reaction of mayenite with water, and the nanocage structure transforms into a calcium aluminate hydrate. This reaction enables easy desorption of H⁻ ions trapped in the structure, which could allow the use of this material in future portable applications. Additionally, this material is 100% recyclable because the cage structure can be recovered by heat treatment after hydrogen desorption. The presence of hydrogen molecules as H⁻ ions was confirmed by ¹H-NMR, gas chromatography, and neutron diffraction analyses. We confirmed the hydrogen state stability inside the mayenite cage by the first-principles calculations to understand the adsorption mechanism and storage capacity and to provide a key for the use of mayenite as a portable hydrogen storage material. Further, we succeeded in introducing H⁻ directly from OH⁻ by a simple process compared with previous studies that used long treatment durations and required careful control of humidity and oxygen gas to form O₂ species before the introduction of H⁻

    Superconductivity of FeSe0.5Te0.5 Thin Films Grown by Pulsed Laser Deposition

    FeSe0.5Te0.5 thin films with PbO-type structure are successfully grown on MgO(100) and LaSrAlO4(001) substrates from FeSe0.5Te0.5 or FeSe0.5Te0.75 polycrystalline targets by pulsed-laser deposition. The film deposited on the MgO substrate (film thickness ~ 55 nm) shows superconductivity at 10.6 K (onset) and 9.2 K (zero resistivity). On the other hand, the film deposited on the LaSrAlO4 substrate (film thickness ~ 250 nm) exhibits superconductivity at 5.4 K (onset) and 2.7 K (zero resistivity). This suggests the strong influence of substrate materials and/or the c-axis length to superconducting properties of FeSe0.5Te0.5 thin films.Comment: 24 pages, 5 figure

    Conditioned medium from stem cells derived from human exfoliated deciduous teeth ameliorates NASH via the Gut-Liver axis

    Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) occurrence has been increasing and is becoming a major cause of liver cirrhosis and liver cancer. However, effective treatments for NASH are still lacking. We examined the benefits of serum-free conditioned medium from stem cells derived from human exfoliated deciduous teeth (SHED-CM) on a murine non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) model induced by a combination of Western diet (WD) and repeated administration of low doses of carbon tetrachloride intraperitoneally, focusing on the gut-liver axis. We showed that repeated intravenous administration of SHED-CM significantly ameliorated histological liver fibrosis and inflammation in a murine NASH model. SHED-CM inhibited parenchymal cell apoptosis and reduced the activation of inflammatory macrophages. Gene expression of pro-inflammatory and pro-fibrotic mediators (such as Tnf-α, Tgf-β, and Ccl-2) in the liver was reduced in mice treated with SHED-CM. Furthermore, SHED-CM protected intestinal tight junctions and maintained intestinal barrier function, while suppressing gene expression of the receptor for endotoxin, Toll-like receptor 4, in the liver. SHED-CM promoted the recovery of Caco-2 monolayer dysfunction induced by IFN-γ and TNF-α in vitro. Our findings suggest that SHED-CM may inhibit NASH fibrosis via the gut-liver axis, in addition to its protective effect on hepatocytes and the induction of macrophages with unique anti-inflammatory phenotypes

    Evaluation of oral immunotherapy efficacy and safety by maintenance dose dependency: A multicenter randomized study

    Background Generally, oral immunotherapy (OIT) aims for daily administration. Recently, the efficacy of treatment with OIT at a low dose has been reported. However, the optimal dose and the evaluation of dose-dependent OIT outcome have not been described. Methods A multicenter, parallel, open-labeled, prospective, non-placebo controlled, randomized study enrolled 101 Japanese patients for treatment with OIT. We hypothesized that target dose OIT would induce short-term unresponsiveness (StU) earlier than reduced dose OIT. StU was defined as no response to 6200 mg whole egg, 3400 mg milk, and 2600 mg wheat protein, as evaluated by oral food challenge after 2-week ingestion cessation. To compare the two doses of OIT efficacy, the maximum ingestion doses during the maintenance phase of OIT were divided into 100%-dose or 25%-dose groups against their target StU dose, respectively. A total of 51 patients were assigned to the 100%-dose group [hen's egg (HE) = 26, cow's milk (CM) = 13, wheat = 12] and 50 to the 25%-dose group (HE = 25, CM = 13, wheat = 12). Primary outcome was established by comparing StU at 1 year. Secondary outcome was StU at 2 years and established by comparing allergic symptoms and immunological changes. Results The year 1 StU rates (%) for the 100%- and 25%-dose groups were 26.9 vs. 20.0 (HE), 7.7 vs. 15.4 (CM), and 50.0 vs. 16.7 (wheat), respectively. The year 2 StU rates were 30.8 vs. 36.0 (HE), 7.7 vs. 23.1 (CM), and 58.3 vs. 58.3 (wheat), respectively. There were no statistically significant differences in StU between years 1 and 2. The total allergic symptom rate in the 25%-dose group was lower than that in the 100%-dose group for egg, milk, and wheat. Antigen-specific IgE levels for egg-white, milk, and wheat decreased at 12 months. Conclusions Reduced maintenance dose of egg OIT showed similar therapeutic efficacy to the target dose. However, we were not able to clearly demonstrate the efficacy, particularly for milk and wheat. Reducing the maintenance dose for eggs, milk, and wheat may effectively lower the symptoms associated with their consumption compared to the target OIT dose. Furthermore, aggressive reduction of the maintenance dose might be important for milk and wheat, compared to the 25%-dose OIT

    Results of laparoscopic subtotal cholecystectomy by laparoscopic linear stapler in difficult cases with severe cholecystitis

    Laparoscopic subtotal cholecystectomy (LSC) has been recognized as a safe and feasible alternative surgical procedure for a difficult laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) with severe inflammation in Calot’s triangle. We compared the surgical outcomesof cholecystectomy for acute cholecystitis between standard LC and LSC using laparoscopic linear stapler. 172 patients were diagnosed as acute cholecystitis, among them, 16 patients who underwent LSC and other 156 patients who underwent standardLC were enrolled in this study. The severity grading of acute cholecystitis in LSC group was significantly higher than LC group. Operation time was longer in the LSC group than LC group. LSC had significantly more intraoperative blood loss compared to LC. However, there was no significant difference in the postoperative complications between two groups.
