Homes form the basis of families’ everyday lives, as well as the growth of children as members of society. In order to realize more fulfilling lives, it is necessary for children to develop knowledge of home living. While knowledge of home living is taught as part of various subjects in school, home economics is the only subject in which it is taught as a specific educational topic as housing education. However, due to the difficulty of teaching housing education and a lack of teaching materials among other issues, the content that is taught varies among teachers, and these issues have not been sufficiently addressed. In the present study, we organized and analyzed the descriptive content of home economics textbooks used at senior high schools, six on “General Home Economics” used in academic year 2014.Based on the results, we summarized the housing education content that should be taught in senior high schools, and proposed a teaching plan

As society undergoes a rapid process of informatization, people need to be able to select the necessary information from the great volume that is available in their daily lives and to be able to output that information using the appropriate means. Schools, moreover, are promoting the informatization of education, and the new government course guidelines have sought to develop students’ ability to use information, which is an important life skills. In teaching each course of study, educators need to promote information education along with achieving the objectives of that course. The purpose of using information is to live better. This is also a purpose of home economics, which aims to develop the ability to lead a better life. The objective of this research was to set out and examine what types of learning activities can be incorporated to develop the ability to use information in home economics as a discipline that covers all aspects of life including food, clothing, shelter, family, home, consumption, and the environment. The research found that in all areas of home economics education, the perspective on acquiring the ability to use information correlates to learning activities. It is believed that it will become more and more important in home economics education in the future for instructors to be conscious of developing their students’ ability to use information as they teach

Natural disasters are occurring more frequently and have intensified in recent years, resulting in emphasis on safety and the surrounding environment in the selection of housing. The new lifestyle brought about by the coronavirus pandemic has also led to growing interest in diverse ways of living. People’s housing needs are changing considerably. Housing is the foundation that supports daily life, and housing education has mainly been carried out in home economics classes in school education to date. Home economics teaches fundamental and basic knowledge and skills related to comfortable living and aims to guide students toward living a safe and environmentally conscious lifestyle. The entire school education system needs to be addressed to enhance housing education in the future. We therefore attempted to reconsider housing education from a cross-curricular perspective. We organized descriptions of curriculum guidelines for each subject and considered the ideal state of housing education in school education, with a focus on home economics. The results revealed scattered content pertaining to housing education throughout the learning content of each subject

As society undergoes sweeping changes, the circumstances surrounding school education are also changing. Issues such as the deterioration of children’s desire to learn and academic ability, bullying, and nonattendance have emerged. To appropriately respond to these issues, improvement of teacher qualifications and skills is required now more than ever. Because teacher qualifications and skills are formed continuously during the stages of teacher development, hiring, and training, the present study focuses on university, which represents the “development” stage. Using case examples of practical teaching, we consider the potential for improvement of the qualifications and skills cultivated at university. We continuously conducted group discussions on various education issues with volunteers, primarily graduate students. The findings of a questionnaire study administered to the participants indicated that group discussion had high effectiveness for the items “The social skill of trying to cooperate with others,” “The ethical perspective of awareness of behavior that serves as a model,” and “Sense of mission as a teacher,” suggesting that discussion can result in improvement in teacher qualifications and skills. In addition, 95% of students answered that they were able to acquire “Ability to speak in front of people” and “Listening skills.” These findings suggest that group discussion is effective. In the future, we intend to further examine the nature of practical teaching that takes advantage of the characteristics of students at teaching colleges

Home economics is the study of lifestyle in general, including food, clothing, housing, family, consumption, and environment. Few teaching hours are devoted to home economics, so little time is spent on each of these topics. One report stated that less focus is given to housing field in particular than to other topics, and instruction in this topic differs depending on the teacher. What to teach and how to teach it are important factors for effective instruction in a limited time. This paper therefore lays out what should be taught about housing field under current government curriculum guidelines. To do this, the authors determined instructional contents by comparing and studying the written contents of textbooks, the main teaching materials used for this subject. In all, 22 textbooks were used for this study, all from the 2014-15 school year : two used at the elementary school level, three in junior high school, and 17 in senior high school(consisting of 10 focusing on “Home Basics,” six on “Comprehensive Home Economics,” and one on “Life Design”). Analysis of the textbooks clarified what contents students should learn in elementary, junior high, and senior high school

In recent years, consumers have gravitated toward lower prices for clothing. One of the reasons for this is the rise of “fast fashion,” a term used to refer to brands that sell new products in large quantities at low prices. At present, the large number of clothing items deemed unnecessary is exacerbating the burden on the environment. Schools are promoting education that incorporates perspectives on building a sustainable society. There is a need to design classes that will cultivate environmentally friendly clothing habits. This study reports on a survey that sought to clarify university students\u27 awareness of fast fashion and the challenges it presents in order to obtain basic materials for curriculum development. It was determined that university students were keenly interested in clothing and fashion, but had a low level of comprehension about fast fashion. They held a favorable view of fast fashion brands, which they associated with an abundance of simple clothing items incorporating trendy designs at low prices. On the other hand, they were unable to make the connection between clothing habits and the environment

The annual number of suicides in Japan has exceeded 30,000 since 1998, including approximately 300 children. While this may be a small proportion of the overall number, suicide among children is an important issue in school education given the vulnerability of children to influence from others and the risk of suicide clusters. Home economics is a subject that covers life in general and captures the lives of individuals from the perspective of lifelong development. It is a subject that cultivates the strength to live, and may provide opportunities for in−depth implementation of “education on life”. In the present study, we aimed to explore possibilities for implementation of “education on life” in home economics by analyzing case examples of implementation in Hyogo Prefecture, which has taken a leading role in education concerning life. Analysis revealed the following 25 case examples in the 5−year period between 2007 and 2011: elementary school, n=11; junior high school, n=8; and senior high school, n=6. Education on life was implemented in settings such as class subjects, moral education, and overall learning, and often involved hands−on activities and was in some cases provided in conjunction with school events. As learning effects, the joy of living derived from enhancement of self−esteem and self−worth was seen in many cases. In addition, implementation of “education on life” in home economics education was considered sufficiently feasible based on its relevance to independence in life, which is the objective of home economics, and these approaches were thought to play an important role in education

Rapidly declining birthrate, population aging, and population decline entail issues such as deterioration in the quality of the living environment resulting from an increase in the number of vacant houses and weakening of ties in local communities. Japan's housing policy has shifted markedly from securing housing quantity to improving housing quality. To improve the quality of housing, residents must appropriately manage their residences to enable comfortable occupancy for long periods of time. Acquisition of knowledge about housing management is necessary to appropriately manage and maintain residences. Housing education in home economics mainly focuses on housing management in the senior high school subject Katei Sogo. Accordingly, we conducted research for the purpose of organizing what content about housing management is studied from what perspectives and obtaining basic information for lesson development concerning housing management by performing analysis of the descriptive content of textbooks. The necessity of housing management was described in textbooks from the perspective of extending the service life of housing for the purpose of living comfortably and safely. Differences in the descriptive content of specific methods of maintenance were found among textbooks.departmental bulletin pape

We made a video about thread and French knots which are the basic hand-sewn skills of garment making, based on the actual skills of university students. As a result of a survey of university students\u27 skills, it was found that the students are generally less skilled in thread-knotting than in French-knotting. Video search on the YouTube website showed that the most are explained for the right-handed, and few are for the left-handed. A video for right- and left-handed students were newly created as a teaching material. Students\u27 performances of knotting were evaluated by the teachers and compared according to whether the videos were watched or not. The group who practiced while watching the video had a higher and lower percentages of good A ratings and the poor C ratings, respectively. In particular, watching the video was rather more effective to improve the skill of thread-knotting than that of French-knotting. The video was useful than pictures in repeatedly watching the fingering of knotting

As families grow more diverse in form and have fewer children, home life has changed. Now there are very few opportunities for junior high school students to interact with preschool-age children. Home economics classes could include opportunities to interact directly with those children. The aim in providing such experience would be to help junior high schoolers understand persons of a different generation than themselves, and develop compassion and kindness. Anticipating situations in which it would be difficult to provide childcare experiential activities in the school environment, this research consisted of classes that included hands-on activities like role-playing instead. The benefits were then verified. To better understand the junior high schoolers, they were administered a questionnaire before the classes began. They were asked about their experience and interest in interacting with infants and small children. Then a one-hour class was given to four different classes of second-year junior high schoolers. Changes in the students following the class were analyzed in comparison with earlier answers. The results indicate that after the class, students were more interested in small children and had a better understanding of them. Additionally, role-playing gave students new awareness and made them think effectively about relevant matters during interactions with small children
