    Suppression of MIP-2 or IL-8 production by annexins A1 and A4 during coculturing of macrophages with late apoptotic human peripheral blood neutrophils

    AbstractAnnexin A1 (ANXA1) is a well-known anti-inflammatory protein that is expressed on the surface of apoptotic cells. Annexin A4 (ANXA4) is also recruited from the nucleus to the cytoplasm in apoptotic cells, although it is not known whether or not ANXA4 is expressed on the surface of apoptotic cells. In this study, we obtained rabbit anti-human ANXA1 and ANXA4 antibodies, and then examined whether or not ANXA1 and ANXA4 are expressed on the surface of early and late human apoptotic cells. ANXA1 and, to a lesser extent, ANXA4 were detected on late but not early apoptotic HeLa cells, whereas ANXA1 and a small amount of ANXA4 were detected on both early and late apoptotic human neutrophils. We then examined the effects of the anti-human ANXA1 and ANXA4 antibodies on the mouse or human macrophage response to human apoptotic cells. Upon coculturing of mouse or human macrophages with late apoptotic human neutrophils, anti-human ANXA1 antibodies and, to a lesser extent, anti-human ANXA4 antibodies increased MIP-2 or IL-8 production significantly, suggesting that ANXA1 and ANXA4 suppress MIP-2 or IL-8 production by macrophages in response to late apoptotic human neutrophils

    An interdisciplinary approach to teaching common and shared English in DWCLA was explored to determine its usefulness and possible application as a means of enhancing students’ incentive to learn English. A gathering of a small number of students from multiple faculties was set up as a base for free participation. It was expected that students of various faculties would accept health and medical themes. The methods used were as follows. We investigated the differences in English vocabulary of each student using corpus analysis. The method in prosody was applied to improve the students’ hearing skills, which allowed them to recognize inaudible or altered sounds. Some theoretical hints were obtained from “A book of five rings,” written by a Japanese warrior long ago. The entity behind a word would be realized by learning a scenario or script of the word as if imagining a constellation from a flock of stars. These findings and the trial outcomes may provide a clue as to the evolution of our English teaching system on campus.研究プロジェクト論

    A profile of pro-inflammatory cytokine expression in human Delta-1-induced monocyte-derived Langerhans cell-like dendritic cells after stimulation with Toll-like receptor ligands

    Monocyte-derived Langerhans cell-like dendritic cells (Mo-LCs) are involved in epidermal disorders such as psoriasis in murine models. However, the roles of Mo-LCs in the pathogenesis of psoriasis in humans remain unclear. Also, the contribution of notch ligand delta-like 1 (DLL-1), expressed on keratinocytes, to Mo-LC functions requires clarification. Here, we established a new method of stimulating Mo-LCs derived from CD14+ monocytes with immobilized human DLL-1 to generate induced Mo-LCs (DI(+)Mo-LCs). The DI(+)Mo-LCs were compared to the dendritic cells derived from monocytes (Mo-DCs) cultured with interleukin-4 (IL-4) and granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF), and M1 macrophages (Mφ) derived from monocytes cultured with GM-CSF. The DI(+)Mo-LCs were found to produce significant amounts of IL15, IL23A, and interferon-β (IFNB1) in response to the Toll-like receptor (TLR)3 agonist Polyinosinic-polycytidylic acid (Poly(I:C)) or TLR4 agonist lipopolysaccharide (LPS) despite their low expression of tumor necrosis factor (TNF). In conclusion, we have established a new method to generate DI(+)Mo-LCs. We have also discovered that DI(+)Mo-LCs have a unique capacity for producing IL15 and IL23A, which are related to the pathogenesis of psoriasis. Our data contribute to a better understanding of the roles of Mo-LCs in epidermal defense and pathogenesis

    Fault-Injection Attacks against NIST\u27s Post-Quantum Cryptography Round 3 KEM Candidates

    We investigate __all__ NIST PQC Round 3 KEM candidates from the viewpoint of fault-injection attacks: Classic McEliece, Kyber, NTRU, Saber, BIKE, FrodoKEM, HQC, NTRU Prime, and SIKE. All KEM schemes use variants of the Fujisaki-Okamoto transformation, so the equality test with re-encryption in decapsulation is critical. We survey effective key-recovery attacks when we can skip the equality test. We found the existing key-recovery attacks against Kyber, NTRU, Saber, FrodoKEM, HQC, one of two KEM schemes in NTRU Prime, and SIKE. We propose a new key-recovery attack against the other KEM scheme in NTRU Prime. We also report an attack against BIKE that leads to leakage of information of secret keys. The open-source pqm4 library contains all KEM schemes except Classic McEliece and HQC. We show that giving a single instruction-skipping fault in the decapsulation processes leads to skipping the equality test __virtually__ for Kyber, NTRU, Saber, BIKE, and SIKE. We also report the experimental attacks against them. We also report the implementation of NTRU Prime allows chosen-ciphertext attacks freely and the timing side-channel of FrodoKEM reported in Guo, Johansson, and Nilsson (CRYPTO 2020) remains, while there are no such bugs in their NIST PQC Round 3 submissions

    Multiple-Valued Plaintext-Checking Side-Channel Attacks on Post-Quantum KEMs

    In this paper, we present a side-channel analysis (SCA) on key encapsulation mechanisms (KEMs) based on the Fujisaki–Okamoto (FO) transformation and its variants. Many post-quantum KEMs usually perform re-encryption during key decapsulation to achieve chosen-ciphertext attack (CCA) security. The side-channel leakage of re-encryption can be exploited to mount a key-recovery plaintext-checking attack (KR-PCA), even if the chosen-plaintext attack (CCA) secure decryption constructing the KEM is securely implemented. Herein, we propose an efficient side-channel-assisted KR-PCA on post-quantum KEMs, and achieve a key recovery with significantly fewer attack traces than existing ones in TCHES 2022 and 2023. The basic concept of the proposed attack is to introduce a new KR-PCA based on a multiple-valued (MV-)PC oracle and then implement a dedicated MV-PC oracle based on a multi-classification neural network (NN). The proposed attack is applicable to the NIST PQC selected algorithm Kyber and the similar lattice-based Saber, FrodoKEM and NTRU Prime, as well as SIKE. We also present how to realize a sufficiently reliable MV-PC oracle from NN model outputs that are not 100% accurate, and analyze the tradeoff between the key recovery success rate and the number of attack traces. We assess the feasibility of the proposed attack through attack experiments on three typical symmetric primitives to instantiate a random oracle (SHAKE, SHA3, and AES software). The proposed attack reduces the number of attack traces required for a reliable key recovery by up to 87% compared to the existing attacks against Kyber and other lattice-based KEMs, under the condition of 99.9999% success rate for key recovery. The proposed attack can also reduce the number of attack traces by 85% for SIKE

    Intestinal Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma in a Patient with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus

    A 44-year-old Japanese woman with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) presented to our hospital with abdominal pain. Radiological and endoscopic examinations led to the diagnosis of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma of the jejunum, which was subsequently resected. Patients with SLE reportedly have an increased risk of non-Hodgkin lymphoma, as demonstrated by our patient. Hence, lymphoma should be considered in the differential diagnosis of neoplastic lesions emerging in SLE patients. In addition, flow cytometry using endoscopically biopsied fragments is useful for the immediate diagnosis of lymphoma, leading to timely and accurate preoperative staging

    EEG resting-state networks in Alzheimer’s disease associated with clinical symptoms

    Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a progressive neuropsychiatric disease affecting many elderly people and is characterized by progressive cognitive impairment of memory, visuospatial, and executive functions. As the elderly population is growing, the number of AD patients is increasing considerably. There is currently growing interest in determining AD’s cognitive dysfunction markers. We used exact low-resolution-brain-electromagnetic-tomography independent-component-analysis (eLORETA-ICA) to assess activities of five electroencephalography resting-state-networks (EEG-RSNs) in 90 drug-free AD patients and 11 drug-free patients with mild-cognitive-impairment due to AD (ADMCI). Compared to 147 healthy subjects, the AD/ADMCI patients showed significantly decreased activities in the memory network and occipital alpha activity, where the age difference between the AD/ADMCI and healthy groups was corrected by linear regression analysis. Furthermore, the age-corrected EEG-RSN activities showed correlations with cognitive function test scores in AD/ADMCI. In particular, decreased memory network activity showed correlations with worse total cognitive scores for both Mini-Mental-State-Examination (MMSE) and Alzheimer’s Disease-Assessment-Scale-cognitive-component-Japanese version (ADAS-J cog) including worse sub-scores for orientation, registration, repetition, word recognition and ideational praxis. Our results indicate that AD affects specific EEG-RSNs and deteriorated network activity causes symptoms. Overall, eLORETA-ICA is a useful, non-invasive tool for assessing EEG-functional-network activities and provides better understanding of the neurophysiological mechanisms underlying the disease

    Integrable structure of box-ball systems: crystal, Bethe ansatz, ultradiscretization and tropical geometry

    The box-ball system is an integrable cellular automaton on one dimensional lattice. It arises from either quantum or classical integrable systems by the procedures called crystallization and ultradiscretization, respectively. The double origin of the integrability has endowed the box-ball system with a variety of aspects related to Yang-Baxter integrable models in statistical mechanics, crystal base theory in quantum groups, combinatorial Bethe ansatz, geometric crystals, classical theory of solitons, tau functions, inverse scattering method, action-angle variables and invariant tori in completely integrable systems, spectral curves, tropical geometry and so forth. In this review article, we demonstrate these integrable structures of the box-ball system and its generalizations based on the developments in the last two decades.Comment: 73 page
