Cuticular Hydrocarbon Content that Affects Male Mate Preference of Drosophila melanogaster from West Africa

Intraspecific variation in mating signals and preferences can be a potential source of incipient speciation. Variable crossability between Drosophila melanogaster and D. simulans among different strains suggested the abundance of such variations. A particular focus on one combination of D. melanogaster strains, TW1(G23) and Mel6(G59), that showed different crossabilities to D. simulans, revealed that the mating between females from the former and males from the latter occurs at low frequency. The cuticular hydrocarbon transfer experiment indicated that cuticular hydrocarbons of TW1 females have an inhibitory effect on courtship by Mel6 males. A candidate component, a C25 diene, was inferred from the gas chromatography analyses. The intensity of male refusal of TW1 females was variable among different strains of D. melanogaster, which suggested the presence of variation in sensitivity to different chemicals on the cuticle. Such variation could be a potential factor for the establishment of premating isolation under some conditions

A Fatal Aortoesophageal Fistula Caused by Critical Combination of Double Aortic Arch and Nasogastric Tube Insertion for Superior Mesenteric Artery Syndrome

Double aortic arch (DAA) is a rare vascular congenital abnormality. Since a vascular ring surrounds bronchus and esophagus, any oral or nasal intubation can physically cause fatal aortoesophageal fistula (AEF). We report herein the first case of association of DAA and superior mesenteric artery (SMA) syndrome and the second case of AEF caused by nasogastric intubation in an adult with DAA. A 19-year-old woman visited our hospital for nausea and vomiting. She was diagnosed with SMA syndrome by computed tomography (CT). Nasogastric intubation relieved her symptoms in 4 days. Extramural compression with top ulceration was found in esophagogastroduodenoscopy on the 5th hospital day. She suddenly showed massive hematemesis on the 12th hospital day. AEF was found by CT. Soon, she died despite of intensive care. Retrospective interview disclosed the fact that DAA was pointed out in her childhood. We conclude that intubation must be avoided in DAA and a detailed clinical interview about DAA is mandatory to avoid AEF

Cryptosporidiosis in a transplant recipient with severe intractable diarrhea : Detection of Cryptosporidium oocysts by intestinal biopsies

    Get PDF
Disseminated Cryptosporidium infection results in manifestations similar to those of graft‐versus‐host disease (GVHD), which hampers the detection of Cryptosporidium infection after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. Surveillance of oocysts on the surface of intestinal epithelial cells is needed for early and appropriate detection of Cryptosporidium infection in transplant recipients on immunosuppressants with severe intractable diarrhea. We present the first case of Cryptosporidium meleagridis infection in Japan after allogeneic cord blood transplantation

    Pusher現象例の主観的垂直認知にUSNが及ぼす影響

Pusher behavior (PB) impairs verticality in the frontal plane and is often associated with unilateral spatial neglect (USN). However, it is unclear whether USN affects verticality among patients with PB. We aimed to clarify the characteristics of verticality among PB, with and without USN. The study included 43 patients with right hemisphere stroke, including 12 without PB or USN, 10 with only USN, 10 with PB only, and 11 with PB and USN, and 15 age-matched healthy individuals. The subjective visual vertical (SVV), subjective postural vertical with eyes closed (SPV), and subjective postural vertical with eyes open were assessed. Under each condition, the mean (tilt direction) and standard deviation (variability) across trials were calculated. The variability of SVV was significantly greater among patients with only USN (6.9°±5.9°) or those with PB and USN (7.6 ± 4.3°). On SPV, the contralesional tilt was significantly greater, with higher variability, in patients with only PB (-2.2°±1.1° and 6.3°±1.4°, respectively) and those with PB and USN (-2.1°±2.0° and 6.6°±2.0°, respectively) than in the other groups. In patients with PB, SVV differed depending on the presence of USN, but it was suggested that SPV might not be affected by USN. These findings are important to plan PB treatment.首都大学東京学位論文甲第966号副論

Multiple myeloma with high adenosine deaminase expression

A 50-year-old man with immunoglobulin A type multiple myeloma (MM) was referred to our hospital after bortezomib therapy. He had high alkaline phosphatase and lactate dehydrogenase levels. Computed tomography showed osteolytic and osteoblastic bone lesions. Response to salvage chemotherapy was temporary, and he developed a right pleural effusion with high adenosine deaminase (ADA) levels. He died from bleeding associated with a pelvic bone fracture 9 months later. ADA mRNA expression and ADA secretion of the MM cells from the patient were higher than those from myeloma cell lines tested. Clinical relevance of high ADA expression in MM cells is warranted

Busulfan for lymphoma with CNS involvement

The prognosis of relapsed or refractory lymphoma with central nervous system (CNS) involvement remains poor because of the lack of anticancer drugs with sufficient CNS penetration. [Case 1] A 65-year-old man was diagnosed with Stage IV mantle cell lymphoma. After two courses of chemotherapy and autologous hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) collection, urinary retention with fever developed. Cerebrospinal fluid analysis revealed leptomeningeal involvement, which was refractory to high-dose methotrexate therapy. Autologous peripheral blood stem cell transplantation (ASCT) was performed, followed by intravenous busulfan (ivBU), cyclophosphamide, and etoposide ; thereafter, no relapse has been detected for over six years. [Case 2] A 40-year-old woman with right lower hemiplegia was diagnosed with primary CNS lymphoma. Although four courses of high-dose methotrexate therapy were administered, the cerebral tumor increased in size. HSCs were collected after methotrexate therapy, and ASCT was performed in addition to conditioning using ivBU, cyclophosphamide, and etoposide, followed by whole-brain and local boost irradiation. She achieved complete remission, but relapsed two years after ASCT. High-dose ivBU-containing conditioning regimens with ASCT may be useful for refractory B-cell lymphoma with CNS involvement
