Large Polarization Degree of Comet 2P/Encke Continuum Based on Spectropolarimetric Signals During Its 2017 Apparition

Spectropolarimetry is a powerful technique for investigating the physical properties of gas and solid materials in cometary comae without mutual contamination, but there have been few spectropolarimetric studies to extract each component. We attempt to derive the continuum polarization degree of comet 2P/Encke, free from influence of molecular emissions. The target is unique in that it has an orbit dynamically decoupled from Jupiter like main-belt asteroids, while ejecting gas and dust like ordinary comets. We observed the comet using the Higashi-Hiroshima Optical and Near-Infrared Camera attached to the Cassegrain focus of the 150-cm Kanata telescope on UT 2017 February 21 when the comet was at the solar phase angle of 75.7 deg. We find that the continuum polarization degree with respect to the scattering plane is 33.8+/-2.7 % at the effective wavelength of 0.815 um, which is significantly higher than those of cometary dust in a high-Pmax group at similar phase angles. Assuming that an ensemble polarimetric response of 2P/Encke's dust as a function of phase angle is morphologically similar with those of other comets, its maximum polarization degree is estimated to > 40 % at the phase angle of ~100 deg. In addition, we obtain the polarization degrees of the C2 swan bands (0.51-0.56 um), the NH2 alpha bands (0.62-0.69 um) and the CN-red system (0.78-0.94 um) in a range of 3-19 %, which depend on the molecular species and rotational quantum numbers of each branch. The polarization vector aligns nearly perpendicularly to the scattering plane with the average of 0.4 deg over a wavelength range of 0.50-0.97 um. From the observational evidence, we conjecture that the large polarization degree of 2P/Encke would be attributable to a dominance of large dust particles around the nucleus, which have remained after frequent perihelion passages near the Sun.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysic

Photometry and Polarimetry of 2010 XC15_{15}: Observational Confirmation of E-type Near-Earth Asteroid Pair

Asteroid systems such as binaries and pairs are indicative of physical properties and dynamical histories of the Small Solar System Bodies. Although numerous observational and theoretical studies have been carried out, the formation mechanism of asteroid pairs is still unclear, especially for near-Earth asteroid (NEA) pairs. We conducted a series of optical photometric and polarimetric observations of a small NEA 2010 XC15_{15} in 2022 December to investigate its surface properties. The rotation period of 2010 XC15_{15} is possibly a few to several dozen hours and color indices of 2010 XC15_{15} are derived as gr=0.435±0.008g-r=0.435\pm0.008, ri=0.158±0.017r-i=0.158\pm0.017, and rz=0.186±0.009r-z=0.186\pm0.009 in the Pan-STARRS system. The linear polarization degrees of 2010 XC15_{15} are a few percent at the phase angle range of 58^{\circ} to 114^{\circ}. We found that 2010 XC15_{15} is a rare E-type NEA on the basis of its photometric and polarimetric properties. Taking the similarity of not only physical properties but also dynamical integrals and the rarity of E-type NEAs into account, we suppose that 2010 XC15_{15} and 1998 WT24_{24} are of common origin (i.e., asteroid pair). These two NEAs are the sixth NEA pair and first E-type NEA pair ever confirmed, possibly formed by rotational fission. We conjecture that the parent body of 2010 XC15_{15} and 1998 WT24_{24} was transported from the main-belt through the ν6\nu_6 resonance or Hungaria region.Comment: Resubmitted to AAS Journals. The effects of trehalose was studied on the properties of rice flour muffins where 5 to 15% of trehalose (flour basis) was added and sugar was adjusted to give the same sweetness. The volume of muffins tended to increase as trehalose level increased. Trehalose lowerd water activity and improved storage property. Hardness of muffins increased during storage but T-10 muffin was softer than other rice flour muffins after 96hr of storage. Evaluating muffins by pair test, the taste of T-10 was significantly prefered to that of T-0

Spectral Type and Geometric Albedo of (98943) 2001 CC21, the Hayabusa2# Mission Target

We conducted optical polarimetry and near-infrared spectroscopy of JAXA's Hayabusa2# mission target, (98943) 2001 CC21, in early 2023. Our new observations indicated that this asteroid has a polarimetric inversion angle of ~21 deg, absorption bands around 0.9 and 1.9 um, and a geometric albedo of 0.285 +- 0.083. All these features are consistent with those of S-type but inconsistent with L-type. Based on this evidence, we conclude that JAXA's Hayabusa2# spacecraft will explore an S-type asteroid with albedo and size (0.42-0.56 km when we assume the absolute magnitude of 18.6) similar to (25143) Itokawa.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, Submitted to MNRAS Letter on 2023 April

Multicolor and multi-spot observations of Starlink's Visorsat

This study provides the results of simultaneous multicolor observations for the first Visorsat (STARLINK-1436) and the ordinary Starlink satellite, STARLINK-1113 in the UU, BB, VV, gg', rr, ii, RCR_{\rm C}, ICI_{\rm C}, zz, JJ, HH, and KsK_s bands to quantitatively investigate the extent to which Visorsat reduces its reflected light. Our results are as follows: (1) in most cases, Virorsat is fainter than STARLINK-1113, and the sunshade on Visorsat, therefore, contributes to the reduction of the reflected sunlight; (2) the magnitude at 550 km altitude (normalized magnitude) of both satellites often reaches the naked-eye limiting magnitude (<< 6.0); (3) from a blackbody radiation model of the reflected flux, the peak of the reflected components of both satellites is around the zz band; and (4) the albedo of the near infrared range is larger than that of the optical range. Under the assumption that Visorsat and STARLINK-1113 have the same reflectivity, we estimate the covering factor, CfC_{\rm f}, of the sunshade on Visorsat, using the blackbody radiation model: the covering factor ranges from 0.18Cf0.920.18 \leq C_{\rm f} \leq 0.92. From the multivariable analysis of the solar phase angle (Sun-target-observer), the normalized magnitude, and the covering factor, the phase angle versus covering factor distribution presents a moderate anti-correlation between them, suggesting that the magnitudes of Visorsat depend not only on the phase angle but also on the orientation of the sunshade along our line of sight. However, the impact on astronomical observations from Visorsat-designed satellites remains serious. Thus, new countermeasures are necessary for the Starlink satellites to further reduce reflected sunlight.Comment: 31 pages, 9 figures, published in PAS

The effects of sugars were studied on the properties of muffins where 5 to 15% of sugar was replaced with trehalose to give the same sweetness. The volume of muffins tended to increase as trehalose level increased. Water activity in the crumb decreased during 96 hr of muffin storage. Trehalose lowered water activity and improved storage property. Hardness of muffins increased during storage but T-33 muffin was softer than T-0 after 96 hr of storage at 5℃. Enthalpy for melting amylopectin crystallites in the crumb of T-33 was significantly less than T-0. So it is supposed to be one of the reasons why T-33 muffin was softer after sotrage. Evaluating muffins by sensory test, it was possible to add trehalose up to 33% (flour basis)

A NOVEL MOUSE WOUND MODEL FOR SCAR TISSUE FORMATION IN ABDOMINAL MUSCLE WALL

    No full text
Hypertrophic scars found on the human body rarely develop in experimental animals, possibly due to their looser skin structure. This makes it difficult to understand the genesis of scar lesions. Therefore, appropriate animal models are urgently needed. In this study, we established a novel experimental model of a scar-forming wound by resecting a small portion of the abdominal muscle wall on the lower center of the abdomen in C57BL/6N mice, which are exposed to contractive forces by the surrounding muscle tissue. As a low-tension control, a back skin excision model was used with a splint fixed onto the excised skin edge, and granulation tissue formed on the muscle fascia supported by the back skeleton. One week after the resection, initial healing reactions, such as fibroblast proliferation, occurred in both models. However, after 21 days, lesions with collagen-rich granulation tissues, which were also accompanied by multiple nodular/spherical-like structures, developed only in the abdominal wall model. These lesions were analogous to scar lesions in humans. Therefore, the animal model developed in this study is unique in that fibrous scar tissues form under physiological conditions without using any artificial factors and is valuable for studying the pathogenesis and preclinical treatment of scar lesions
