    Valence and Na content dependences of superconductivity in NaxCoO2.yH2O

    Various samples of sodium cobalt oxyhydrate with relatively large amounts of Na+^{+} ions were synthesized by a modified soft-chemical process in which a NaOH aqueous solution was added in the final step of the procedure. From these samples, a superconducting phase diagram was determined for a section of a cobalt valence of \sim+3.48, which was compared with a previously obtained one of \sim+3.40. The superconductivity was significantly affected by the isovalent exchanger of Na+^{+} and H3_{3}O+^{+}, rather than by variation of Co valence, suggesting the presence of multiple kinds of Fermi surface. Furthermore, the high-field magnetic susceptibility measurements for one sample up to 30 T indicated an upper critical field much higher than the Pauli limit supporting the validity of the spin-triplet pairing mechanism.Comment: 4 figures and 1 tabl

    Characteristics of Clinical and Imaging Findings of Epidermoid Cysts under the Skin of the Mental Region

    Epidermoid cyst often arises in the fl oor of oral cavity; however, it is relatively rare to arise subcutaneously in the mental region. We reported characteristics of clinical and imaging fi ndings of epidermoid cysts under the skin of the mental region. The patient was a 53-year-old male. He complained of a subcutaneous mass without pain in the left mental region. A palpable soft and movable thumb-sized mass without pain was observed at the fi rst examination. Ultrasound examination revealed a well-demarcated mass with heterogenous hyper-echoic internal echo and posterior echo enhancement. On power Doppler sonography, a small amount of blood supply was found around the periphery of the mass. Plain CT scan revealeda globular soft-tissue mass with peripheral high and central low CT values area. The mass was removed under local anesthesia using intraoral approach. A histopathologic diagnosis was epidermoid cyst. Recurrence is not observed 2 years after surgery. There were only 3 reports of epidermoid cysts in the mental region, including our case in Japan, clinically characteristics of age ranging 20 to 66 years of age and the mean age of 46 years, with 2 males and 1 female. The size wasfrom 20 mm to 12 mm in diameter and from the tip of a thumb up to the tip of a small fi nger. Ultrasound images of the inside of epidermoid cysts that we experienced this time showed enhancement of relatively uniform hyperechoic image and posterior echo, which was characteristically slightly diff erent from fi ndings of epidermoid cysts generally reported

    Characterization of a Novel Bat Adenovirus Isolated from Straw-Colored Fruit Bat (Eidolon helvum).

    Bats are important reservoirs for emerging zoonotic viruses. For extensive surveys of potential pathogens in straw-colored fruit bats (Eidolon helvum) in Zambia, a total of 107 spleen samples of E. helvum in 2006 were inoculated onto Vero E6 cells. The cell culture inoculated with one of the samples (ZFB06-106) exhibited remarkable cytopathic changes. Based on the ultrastructural property in negative staining and cross-reactivity in immunofluorescence assays, the virus was suspected to be an adenovirus, and tentatively named E. helvum adenovirus 06-106 (EhAdV 06-106). Analysis of the full-length genome of 30,134 bp, determined by next-generation sequencing, showed the presence of 28 open reading frames. Phylogenetic analyses confirmed that EhAdV 06-106 represented a novel bat adenovirus species in the genus Mastadenovirus. The virus shared similar characteristics of low G + C contents with recently isolated members of species Bat mastadenoviruses E, F and G, from which EhAdV 06-106 diverged by more than 15% based on the distance matrix analysis of DNA polymerase amino acid sequences. According to the taxonomic criteria, we propose the tentative new species name "Bat mastadenovirus H". Because EhAdV 06-106 exhibited a wide in vitro cell tropism, the virus might have a potential risk as an emerging virus through cross-species transmission

    Antitumor effect of WEE1 blockade as monotherapy or in combination with cisplatin in urothelial cancer

    Overcoming cisplatin (CDDP) resistance is a major issue in urothelial cancer (UC), in which CDDP-based chemotherapy is the first-line treatment. WEE1, a G2/M checkpoint kinase, confers chemoresistance in response to genotoxic agents. However, the efficacy of WEE1 blockade in UC has not been reported. MK-1775, a WEE1 inhibitor also known as AZD-1775, blocked proliferation of UC cell lines in a dose-dependent manner irrespective of TP53 status. MK-1775 synergized with CDDP to block proliferation, inducing apoptosis and mitotic catastrophe in TP53-mutant UC cells but not in TP53-WT cells. Knocking down TP53 in TP53-WT cells induced synergism of MK-1775 and CDDP. In UMUC3 cell xenografts and two patient-derived xenograft lines with MDM2 overexpression, in which the p53/cell cycle pathway was inactivated, AZD-1775 combined with CDDP suppressed tumor growth inducing both M-phase entry and apoptosis, whereas AZD-1775 alone was as effective as the combination in RT4 cell xenografts. Drug susceptibility assay using an ex vivo cancer tissue-originated spheroid system showed correlations with the in vivo efficacy of AZD-1775 alone or combined with CDDP. We determined the feasibility of the drug susceptibility assay using spheroids established from UC surgical specimens obtained by transurethral resection. In conclusion, WEE1 is a promising therapeutic target in the treatment of UC, and a highly specific small molecule inhibitor is currently in early phase clinical trials for cancer. Differential antitumor efficacy of WEE1 blockade alone or combined with CDDP could exist according to p53/cell cycle pathway activity, which might be predictable using an ex vivo 3D primary culture system

    Radiological study on Garré osteomyelitis of the mandible in a child

    We report a case of Garré osteomyelitis of the mandible involving a child. The patient was a 12–year–old girl with symptoms of swelling and pain of the left face. She presented to our hospital with asymmetrical swelling and tenderness and redness from the left cheek to the lower jaw, and tenderness of the left submandibular lymph nodes. Panoramic radiography revealed a well–demarcated radiolucent lesion that continued to the periodontal space of the second molar of the left mandible and was surrounded by a diffuse osteosclerotic area. In addition, cone beam CT images showed an onion peel–like periosteal reaction on the buccal side of the left mandible near this radiolucent lesion. A diagnosis of cellulitis of the left cheek and Garré osteomyelitis of the mandible was determined based on clinical and imaging findings. A cephem antibiotic (D.I.V.) and oral antibacterial drugs were started to improve inflammation. The symptoms promptly improved on the 4th day after the starr of treatment. It was reported that conservative therapy is appropriate treatment to repair tissues from the viewpoint of jaw development as well as the process of tooth formation in children. An early diagnosis based on specific findings like an onion peel appearance on imaging is required for effective treatment of osteomyelitis of the mandible in childhood
