    METALIS, an OAI Service Provider

    Get PDF
METALIS is an OAI Service Provider for the Library and Information Science field. This paper describes the metadata harvesting process and the crosswalks designed to homogenize metadata, the web interface of the Service Provider METALIS and the OpenUrl usage. To homogenize metadata it is necessary to analyse the OAI-PMH output of Data Providers and write ad hoc crosswalks. In particular METALIS homogenizes the fields with subjects, source archives, languages, types of material. As for the web interface, this paper shows how it is structured. As far as the OpenUrl usage is concerned, METALIS offers an innovative service, reversing the standard use of finding full-text versions (that are already available at the connected repositories) and providing a tool to find online resources that have a relation with the results found during the search

A technology overview of a complex migration from Eprints 2 to Eprints 3

    Get PDF
In this poster we list and briefly explain the challenges of a complex migration from Eprints 2 to Eprints 3. The Eprints 2 installation of E-LIS is quite complex and personalized. With this migration we want to transfer all specific features into the new version. The migration is still ongoing and we have found those specific aspects: purge inbox buffer, changes on metadata, UTF-8, browsing of fields with long values and non-Latin-1 chars, specific modifications for editors. Others aspects are: alerts improved, statistics, scripts developed for particular tasks, setup of static pages, Paracit

DOI: uno strumento per costruire la biblioteca digitale

    Get PDF
The Digital Object Identifier t (DOI) is born to address to the needs of publishers in the context of digital documents and of the distribution via Internet of works protected by copyright. The syntax of DOI is quite simple; one of the most important characteristics is to be a ‘dump number’. The initial proposal sorts from the Association of American Publishers in 1996. DOI came as a common base that allows to connect among different identification systems, like ISBN, ISSN, PII, SICI, ect. With notable emphasis the fact is stressed that AAP did not intend to deal with DOI and with the DOI system but a specific foundation, born in 1998, the International DOI Foundation. The discussion about it was developed in particular between 1997 and 2002, when the infrastructure was built that served to manage and to promote the DOI. Several interventions specified the characteristics and the role of DOI. It was decided to use the indecs framework to describe the set of the metadata elements connect with DOI. Norman Paskin, director of IDF, emerges as referring officer of DOI. In the beginnig resolution was ‘one to one’, but DOI requests a resolution ‘one to many’. The change was done when the agency CrossRef started to offer its services to a wider public. This passage facilitates further developments, such as the integration of the standard OpenUrl. It is suggested that a possible competor for the DOI will be the OAI identifier. However it is less robust than the DOI. The future developments of the situation will depend from the quality of related services and from the proliferation of open archives

A World-Wide repository: the technical challenge of E-LIS

    Get PDF
E-LIS is the largest world-wide disciplinary repository for Library and Information Science. It stores and delivers metadata and digital papers in different Unicode scripts (Latin, Chinese, Greek and others). Contributions come from more than 80 countries in all continents. At present it contains around 4,500 full-text documents. The presentation describes the technical improvements implemented in order to manage linguistic differences in uploading, searching and disseminating contents, and to help the editors share their review tasks according to their country. We conclude with an analysis of the beta version of EPrints 3 against some problems that are still ope
