    RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN ACCELERATION OF THE FOOT AND LOWER-LEG MOVEMENT IN SOCCER BALL TRAPPING

    The purpose of this study was to extract motion characteristics from the changes in foot acceleration, ball velocity after trapping, and lower-limb joint angles with regard to inside trapping of the ball in soccer. Thirteen experienced male collegiate soccer players were asked to perform inside trapping of the ball 10 consecutive times in two different tasks. Acceleration of the foot and bodily movements in trapping were recorded using accelerometers and video cameras. There was a significant correlation between ball velocity after trapping and external rotation of both the hip and knee in the first task (hip, r=-0.62; knee, r=-0.65;

    Report of a study using phantom materials, and clinical experience with simultaneous radio-hyperthermotherapy.

    Simultaneous radiohyperthermotherapy (SRH) is a combined hyperthermia-radiation therapy in which irradiation is given during heating. Mutual interference between the high energy radiotherapy system (Toshiba LMR-15A) and the 13.56 MHz capacitive heating system (Omron HEH-500C) was tested with phantom materials prior to a clinical trial with SRH. The energy and flatness of irradiation were not affected by the heating system within the range of clinical use. The high energy radiotherapy system did not affect the increase or distribution of temperature during simultaneous treatment. The results of this phantom study indicated that these apparatuses would not produce clinically significant mutual interference during SRH. A clinical trial was performed on a 57-year-old woman with postoperative recurrence of rectal cancer. This is the first reported clinical case treated with true SRH in which external irradiation was administered during mid capacitive heating. Twelve SRH treatments were performed on the recurrent lesion at a frequency of twice a week for six weeks using the apparatuses described above. There was a significant reduction in pain after treatment. The tumor marker carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) level decreased after treatment. On CT images taken after treatment, the tumor site became a low density area which indicated necrosis. There were no side effects. These results suggest that further clinical study of SRH should be performed to clarify its advantages.</p

    Spatio-temporal distribution of environmental DNA derived from Japanese sea nettle jellyfish Chrysaora pacifica in Omura Bay, Kyushu, Japan

    We surveyed the spatial and temporal distribution of Japanese sea nettle jellyfish Chrysaora pacifica in Omura Bay, Japan, using an environmental DNA (eDNA) method. In 2018, the C. pacifica eDNA concentration increased from March?May at all depths. The seasonal pattern of C. pacifica eDNA was consistent with previous reports based on visual observations along the Japanese coast. Thus, the eDNA method might have advantages to follow the seasonal pattern of C. pacifica while being less time-consuming and less laborious compared with traditional methods. The eDNA concentrations tended to reach a maximum near and/or below the pycnocline throughout this study. Therefore, the vertical distribution of C. pacifica medusae may have been restricted by strong pycnocline formation in July and August 2018. However, even with a weak pycnocline, which C. pacifica should be able to swim across, the apparent distribution of C. pacifica eDNA seems to be restricted by the pycnocline. Therefore, the eDNA method cannot, currently, accurately assess the absolute vertical distribution pattern of C. pacifica, especially when a pycnocline is formed

    Hybrid Surgery for Portosystemic Encephalopathy in a Patient with Liver Cirrhosis: a case report

    Regarding the treatment for a portosystemic shunt, surgical or interventional radiological closure of the shunt was established. Interventional radiology including balloon-occluded retrograde transvenous obliteration can worsen portal hypertension and create a large thrombus close to the major venous system in the case of a huge portosystemic shunt. In contrast, it is also difficult to treat some cases through surgery alone when huge complicated shunts exist very deep in the body. Herein, we report a successful case of surgical shunt ligation for portosystemic encephalopathy in a hybrid operation room that enabled intraoperative angiography and computed tomography. A 62-year-old woman with chronic hepatitis C was referred to our hospital due to high levels of serum ammonia and hepatic encephalopathy. She had a massive, complicated portosystemic shunt from the inferior mesenteric vein to the left renal vein but did not have esophageal or gastric varices. It was difficult to occlude the portosystemic shunt by interventional radiologic techniques because the shunt had an extremely large amount of blood flow and many collateral routes. We performed the shunt ligation in the hybrid operation room. Intraoperative angiography provided detailed information about the portosystemic shunt, such as direction or volume of blood flow and collateral routes in real time. Her encephalopathy disappeared completely and she remains healthy with improved liver functional reserve to date. In conclusion, this is a successful case of a hybrid operation for an extremely large and complicated portosystemic shunt, providing for intraoperative angiography as a safe and reliable surgical treatment for portosystemic encephalopathy in patients with liver cirrhosis

    A new experimental system for irradiating tumors in mice using a linear accelerator under specific pathogen-free conditions.

    We developed a reliable system for the irradiation of xenografted tumors in mice which allows for accurate local irradiation under specific pathogen-free conditions. The system presented here consists of acrylic supports for mice and an acrylic box connected to a pump through 0.22 microns pore-sized filters. Mice with xenotransplanted tumors growing on their right hind legs were set on the supports and put into the box in a laminar flow hood. The tumors of 7 mice were irradiated simultaneously with X-rays of 6 and 10 MV generated by a linear accelerator at a dose rate of 3.1-4.7 Gy/min. The air was ventilated through filters during irradiation in the closed box. Microorganism tests confirmed that no bacteria entered or left the box. One of the significant characteristics of this setup is that it allows for irradiation under conditions of acute hypoxia, which is obtained using an integrated tourniquet. The dose variation among 7 tumors was less than 1%. The rest of the mouse's body was shielded effectively by a half-field technique and a lead block. As a result, the whole body dose for the mice was 0-4% of the total dose absorbed by the tumor. Due to the high dose rate and the ability to irradiate 7 mice simultaneously under specific pathogen-free conditions, this new system can be considered a time-saving and valuable tool for radiation oncology research.</p

    Genetic defects in SAPK signalling, chromatin regulation, vesicle transport and CoA-related lipid metabolism are rescued by rapamycin in fission yeast

    Rapamycin inhibits TOR (target of rapamycin) kinase, and is being used clinically to treat various diseases ranging from cancers to fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva. To understand rapamycin mechanisms of action more comprehensively, 1014 temperature-sensitive (ts) fission yeast (Schizosaccharomyces pombe) mutants were screened in order to isolate strains in which the ts phenotype was rescued by rapamycin. Rapamycin-rescued 45 strains, among which 12 genes responsible for temperature sensitivity were identified. These genes are involved in stress-activated protein kinase (SAPK) signalling, chromatin regulation, vesicle transport, and CoA- and mevalonate-related lipid metabolism. Subsequent metabolome analyses revealed that rapamycin upregulated stress-responsive metabolites, while it downregulated purine biosynthesis intermediates and nucleotide derivatives. Rapamycin alleviated abnormalities in cell growth and cell division caused by sty1 mutants (Δsty1) of SAPK. Notably, in Δsty1, rapamycin reduced greater than 75% of overproduced metabolites (greater than 2× WT), like purine biosynthesis intermediates and nucleotide derivatives, to WT levels. This suggests that these compounds may be the points at which the SAPK/TOR balance regulates continuous cell proliferation. Rapamycin might be therapeutically useful for specific defects of these gene functions

    Infectious Pneumonia and Lower Airway Microorganisms in Patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis

    The relationship between microorganisms present in the lower respiratory tract and the subsequent incidence of pneumonia in patients with rheumatoid arthritis is unclear. A retrospective cohort study was designed to include a total of 121 patients with rheumatoid arthritis who underwent bronchoscopy at three hospitals between January 2008 and December 2017. Data on patient characteristics, microorganisms detected by bronchoscopy, and subsequent incidences of pneumonia were obtained from electronic medical records. Patients were divided into groups based on the microorganisms isolated from the lower respiratory tract. The cumulative incidence of pneumonia was assessed using the Kaplan–Meier method, and decision tree analysis was performed to analyze the relation between the presence of microorganisms and the occurrence of pneumonia. The most frequently isolated microbes were Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, and Haemophilus influenzae. Patients whose samples tested negative for bacteria or positive for normal oral flora were included in the control group. The rate of the subsequent incidence of pneumonia was higher in the P. aeruginosa group than in the control group (p = 0.026), and decision tree analysis suggested that P. aeruginosa and patient performance status were two important factors for predicting the incidence of pneumonia. In patients with rheumatoid arthritis, the presence of P. aeruginosa in the lower respiratory tract was associated with the subsequent incidence of pneumonia
