Adiabatic Electroweak Baryogenesis Driven by an Axion-like Particle

An axion-like particle (ALP) offers a new direction in electroweak baryogenesis because the periodic nature enables it to trigger a strong first-order phase transition insensitively to the decay constant ff. For ff much above TeV, the ALP-induced electroweak phase transition is approximately described by adiabatic processes, distinguishing our scenario for electroweak baryogenesis from the conventional ones. We show that, coupled to the electroweak anomaly, the ALP can naturally realize spontaneous electroweak baryogenesis to solve the matter-antimatter asymmetry problem for ff in the range between about 10510^5 GeV and 10710^7 GeV. In such an ALP window, the CPCP violation for baryogenesis is totally free from the experimental constraints, especially from the recently improved limit on the electron electric dipole moment. Future searches for ALPs could probe our scenario while revealing the connection between electroweak symmetry breaking and baryogenesis.Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures, appendices added, published versio

KINEMATIC ANALYSIS OF GOLF SWING PERFORMED WITH INTENDED LATE HITTING

    Get PDF
The purposes of this study were to analyze and compare the kinematic parameters for standard and purpose golf swings. The purpose golf swing is characterized as intended late hitting and increase displacement of ball through the air (carry). Twenty-five male college golfers were recruited as sUbjects and Science eye field 3 camera system was used to measure the parameters of deterministic model. Paired t-test was used to compare between two different golf swings and correlation coefficients between selected parameters and carry were also computed. As results, a significant difference between standard and purpose golf swings was found in terms of increasing carry. Coefficients of correlation indicated that post-impact ball velocity, pre-impact club head velocity, and meet rate were positively correlated with carry. However, backspin, and angle of release were negatively correlated with carry. These results represented that the parameters of deterministic model were very useful indicators to determine performance and the purpose swing is beneficial to increase carry

Determination of optical and microstructural parameters of ceria films

Light-matter interactions are of tremendous importance in a wide range of fields from solar energy conversion to photonics. Here the optical dispersion behavior of undoped and 20 mol. % Sm doped ceria thin films, both dense and porous, were evaluated by UV-Vis optical transmission measurements, with the objective of determining both intrinsic and microstructural properties of the films. Films, ranging from 14 to 2300 nm in thickness, were grown on single crystal YSZ(100) and MgO(100) using pulsed laser deposition (both dense and porous films) and chemical vapor deposition (porous films only). The transmittance spectra were analyzed using an in-house developed methodology combining full spectrum fitting and envelope treatment. The index of refraction of ceria was found to fall between 2.65 at a wavelength of 400 nm and 2.25 at 800 nm, typical of literature values, and was relatively unchanged by doping. Reliable determination of film thickness, porosity, and roughness was possible for films with thickness ranging from 500 to 2500 nm. Physically meaningful microstructural parameters were extracted even for films so thin as to show no interference fringes at all

Malignant Pleural Effusion from Metastatic Prostate Cancer: A Case Report with Unusual Cytologic Findings

We present a case of 55-year-old man who complained of dyspnea and sputum for a month. He was an ex-smoker with a history of prostate cancer and pulmonary tuberculosis. Chest radiographs revealed bilateral pleural effusions of a small to moderate amount. Pigtail catheters were inserted for drainage. The pleural fluid consisted of large clusters and tightly cohesive groups of malignant cells, which however could not be ascribed to prostate cancer with certainty. We performed immunocytochemical panel studies to determine the origin of cancer metastasis. The immunostaining results were positive for prostate-specific antigen, alpha-methylacyl-coenzyme A racemase, and Nkx 3.1, consistent with prostate cancer. Pleural effusion associated with prostate cancer is rare. To our knowledge, this is the first case report in Korea to describe cytologic features of malignant pleural effusion associated with prostate cancer

EFFECTS OF GENDER AND FOOT POSITION ON ACCELERATION PATTERN OF KNEE AND HIP JOINT DURING DEEP SQUAT

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of gender and foot position on the acceleration patterns of the knee and hip joints during deep squat. Twenty-two male and 10 female collegiate students participated in this study. All the participants performed a deep squat two times in neutral foot position (NFP), with the foot rotated externally by 15° (ERFP). A wireless triaxial accelerometer was attached on the right-side knee and hip joints of each participant. Acceleration data generated in the anterior-posterior (AP), medio-lateral (ML), and superior-inferior (SI) directions during deep squat were collected through the attached acceleration sensor (2000Hz). Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS 24.0, and mixed analysis of variance (p \u3c 0.05) was used to identify the interaction and main effects of gender and foot positions. The acceleration patterns of the knee joint during deep squat according to gender indicated differences between the AP and ML directions. The acceleration motion of the hip joint under the ERFP condition indicated a difference in the SI direction

Treatment of Two Level Artificial Disc Replacement for Cervical Spondylotic Myelopathy

Cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM) is a common spinal disorder caused by compression of the spinal cord, due to degeneration of the cervical spine. We investigated post-operative results and suggest artificial disc replacement (ADR) as an effective surgical method for treating CSM. We present the case of a 36-year-old man, with nuchal pain; severe paresthesia of both upper and lower extremities; and pain, motor weakness, and difficulty in fine motor control of both hands. A cervical X-ray showed spondylotic changes at the C5-6, C6-7 level and MRI revealed cord compression at the C5-6, C6-7 level. ADR was performed at the C5-6, C6-7 level. After the surgery, the motor weakness of both upper extremities and paresthesia of both aspects improved. In addition, the JOA score and Nurick grade improved. A post-operative X-ray showed well positioned instruments, and post- operative MRI displayed no lesions of cord compression. Anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) is widely accepted as a leading treatment for CSM, but ACDF may cause adjacent segment disease (ASD). We suggest that ADR also can represent a good surgical procedure for the management of multilevel spinal cord compression, as it can preserve cervical motion while avoiding AS

Study DesignA prospective study.PurposeTo identify associations between psychiatric factors and patient-reported outcomes after corrective surgery in patients with lumbar degenerative kyphosis (LDK).Overview of LiteratureThus far, to the best of our knowledge, patient factors that may help predict patient-reported outcomes after corrective surgery for LDK have not been studied.MethodsWe prospectively investigated 46 patients with LDK who underwent surgical correction with a minimum follow-up of 2 years. Demographic data were collected. Short form-36, mental component scores (MCS), physical component scores (PCS), Scoliosis Research Society-22 (SRS-22) scores, and Roland-Morris Disability Questionnaire (RMDQ) scores were determined before the surgery and after 2 years of follow-up. Psychiatric conditions were preoperatively evaluated using the Zung depression scale (ZDS) and Zung anxiety scale (ZAS). Patients were divided into two groups (with or without psychiatric issues), according to baseline ZDS and ZAS scores.ResultsPatients included 43 women and 3 men. Twelve patients were deemed to have psychiatric problems (P group) and 34 patients had no psychiatric problems (NP group). No significant intergroup differences were found in MCS, PCS, SRS-22, and RMDQ scores preoperatively. However, at the 2-year follow-up, a significant intergroup difference was observed between PCS and RMDQ scores. Multiple regression analysis revealed that only the presence of a preoperative psychiatric problem can predict PCS and RMDQ scores. Other factors, such as, gender, age, body mass index, bone mineral density, osteotomy site, number of fusion segments, and instrumented levels did not affect PCS or RMDQ scores.ConclusionsThe presence of a psychiatric factor may be an important risk factor underlying poor physical and pain scores after corrective surgery in patients with LDK. The findings presented here suggest that psychiatric factors should be evaluated prior to surgery for determining the risk of a poor outcome

Linear Wave Reflection by Trench with Various Shapes

author's final versionTwo types of analytical solutions for waves propagating over an asymmetric trench are derived. One is a shallow water wave model and the other is an extended model applicable to deeper water. The water depth inside the trench varies in proportion to a power of distance from the center of the trench (where the center means the deepest water depth point and the origin of -coordinate in this study). The mild-slope equation is transformed into a second order ordinary differential equation with variable coefficients based on the longwave assumption or Hunts (1979) approximate solution for wave dispersion. The analytical solutions are then obtained by using the power series technique. The analytical solutions are compared with the numerical solution of the hyperbolic mild-slope equations. After obtaining the analytical solutions under various conditions, the results are analyzed

EFFECT OF SPORTS TAPING APPLIED FUNCTIONAL CORRECTION GARMENT FOR ADOLESCENT IDIOPATHIC SCOLIOSIS IMPROVEMENT

The purpose of this research was to analyze the effect of wearing underwear type functional garment for the correction scoliosis by conducting a case study. Two patients wore the garment for 8–week. Cobb’s angle and EMG activities during a gait were measured before and after the treatment for the analysis. Both subjects showed that the activities of the right psoas, biceps femoris and gluteus medius were increased. The Cobb’s angle was decreased after 8-week period of wearing. These results matched with the purpose of developed functional correction wear that induce the right psoas muscle contraction and the left psoas muscle relaxation. It seems to be useful wear for adolescent scoliosis patients who avoid using orthosis, and to use special functional underwear to improve their posture
