    A Higher-Order Calculation of npnp Scattering in Cut-Off Effective Field Theory

    We report a next-to-leading-order (NLO) chiral perturbation theory calculation of the neutron-proton scattering cross section in the 1S0{}^1S_0 channel using a cut-off regularization. The inclusion of two-pion exchanges in the irreducible diagrams -- or potential -- figuring at NLO is found to be important in enlarging the domain of validity of the effective field theory. We are able to reproduce the {\it empirical} scattering phase shift up to p=300 MeV -- which is comparable to the cutoff scale involved -- with an agreement which is superior to results of other effective field theory approaches. We also discuss the role of the cutoff as a renormalization prescription and the importance of the explicit pion degree of freedom in scattering process.Comment: Substantial changes made in texts and Fig.2.     Gap Analysis Between the Level of Heat Wave Adaptation Policy and Heat Wave Effects in South Korean Municipalities

    This study aims to analyze the gap between the level of heat wave adaptation policies and heat wave effects in South Korean municipalities. First, the types of industries in municipalities were classified using factor analysis and cluster analysis. Second, the level of heat wave adaptation policy in the municipalities was assessed using a fuzzy analytic hierarchy process analysis. Third, the gap between the level of heat wave adaptation policy and the heat wave effect was analyzed. The results show that the heat wave adaptation policies were established in accordance with the heat wave effects to at least some degree. However, closer to the long-term future (2095), the policies have not sufficiently matched the level of heat wave effects. The proportion of municipalities with insufficient levels of heat wave adaptation policies against the heat wave effects was higher among urban-type municipalities. The analysis results suggest two policy implications. First, the heat wave adaptation policies of municipalities should be established through continuous feedback on the predictions of future heat wave effects. Second, urban-type municipalities should strengthen their planning authority and competence by securing a professional workforce and budgets for the establishment of heat wave adaptation policies

    Reconstructive challenge of dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans in the female breast

    Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans is an uncommon locally aggressive malignant neoplasm that most frequently appears in the trunk, followed by the extremities, head, and neck. But occurrence in the breast is extremely rare. We present a case of a 28-year-old woman, who had a history of trauma 5 years previously and excision 1 year before presentation at our clinic. We performed wide excision, together with microscopic and immunohistochemical analysis. No postoperative oncologic treatment was used and she remains disease-free 1 year after the surgery without any tumor recurrence. Here, we report a case of dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans in the female breast and present a detailed discussion of the diagnosis and treatment with reference to available literatures

    Novel water filtration of saline water in the outermost layer of mangrove roots

    The scarcity of fresh water is a global challenge faced at present. Several desalination methods have been suggested to secure fresh water from sea water. However, conventional methods suffer from technical limitations, such as high power consumption, expensive operating costs, and limited system durability. In this study, we examined the feasibility of using halophytes as a novel technology of desalinating high-concentration saline water for long periods. This study investigated the biophysical characteristics of sea water filtration in the roots of the mangrove Rhizophora stylosa from a plant hydrodynamic point of view. R. stylosa can grow even in saline water, and the salt level in its roots is regulated within a certain threshold value through filtration. The root possesses a hierarchical, triple layered pore structure in the epidermis, and most Na+ ions are filtered at the first sublayer of the outermost layer. The high blockage of Na+ ions is attributed to the high surface zeta potential of the first layer. The second layer, which is composed of macroporous structures, also facilitates Na+ ion filtration.     Large area deep ultraviolet light of Al0.47_{0.47}Ga0.53_{0.53}N/Al0.56_{0.56}Ga0.44_{0.44}N multi quantum well with carbon nanotube electron beam pumping

    Large area deep ultraviolet (DUV) light is generated by carbon nanotube (CNT) cold cathode electron beam (C-beam) irradiation on Al0.47_{0.47}Ga0.53_{0.53}N/Al0.56_{0.56}Ga0.44_{0.44}N multi quantum wells (MQWs) anode. We developed areal electron beam (EB) with CNT cold cathode emitters. The CNT emitters on silicon wafer were deposited with an area of 188 mm2^2 , and these were vertically aligned and had conical structures. We optimized the C-beam irradiation conditions to effectively excite AlGaN MQWs. When AlGaN MQWs were excited using an anode voltage of 3 kV and an anode current of 0.8 mA, DUV with a wavelength of 278.7 nm was generated in a large area of 303 mm2^2 . This DUV area is more than 11 times larger than the light emitting area of conventional EB pumped light sources and UV-LEDs

    Effect of media and gelling agents on shoot organogenesis of Liriope platyphylla

    Liriope platyphylla can be multiplied either by planting seeds or dividing its tuberous roots. In this study, a method for L. platyphylla plant shoot organogenesis from meristem explants was developed employing medium and gelling agents. For the selection of optimal medium conditions for shoot organogenesis, the effects of full- and half-strength B5, SH, and MS media were examined. Different concentrations of the gelling agents such as phytagar (6, 7, 8, and 9 g L-1) and gellan gum (2, 3, 4, and 5 g L-1) were examined for efficient shoot formation. The results revealed the superiority of half-strength MS basal medium in shoot organogenesis and growth of Liriope platyphylla. But the half-strength B5 media performed poorly. Compared to plant agar, gellan gum performed well in terms of shoot regeneration and shoot length. When gellan gum was used at 3 g L-1 the maximum number of shoots explant-1 (5.8) and longest shoot (45.8 mm) was observed but the lowest number of shoots explant-1 (3.2) and shortest shoot (21.4 mm) was registered with 5 g L-1. It is proposed from our study that half-strength MS media and gellan gun gelling agent at 3 g/l could be applied in shoot organogenesis and growth of L. platyphylla

    Functional elements demarcated by histone modifications in breast cancer cells

    AbstractHistone modifications are regarded as one of markers to identify regulatory elements which are DNA segments modulating gene transcription. Aberrant changes of histone modification levels are frequently observed in cancer. We have employed ChIP-Seq to identify regulatory elements in human breast cancer cell line, MCF-7 by comparing histone modification patterns of H3K4me1, H3K4me3, and H3K9/14ac to those in normal mammary epithelial cell line, MCF-10A. The genome-wide analysis shows that H3K4me3 and H3K9/14ac are highly enriched at promoter regions and H3K4me1 has a relatively broad distribution over proximity of TSSs as well as other genomic regions. We identified that many differentially expressed genes in MCF-7 have divergent histone modification patterns. To understand the functional roles of distinctively histone-modified regions, we selected 35 genomic regions marked by at least one histone modification and located from 3 to 10kb upstream of TSS in both MCF-7 and MCF-10A and assessed their transcriptional activities. About 66% and 60% of selected regions in MCF-7 and MCF-10A, respectively, enhanced the transcriptional activity. Interestingly, most regions marked by H3K4me1 exhibited an enhancer activity. Regions with two or more kinds of histone modifications did show varying activities. In conclusion, our data reflects that comprehensive analysis of histone modification profiles under cell type-specific chromatin environment should provide a better chance for defining functional regulatory elements in the genome
