Scholarship as a Vocation: Reflections on the Past and Future of Social Science

    Get PDF
This essay seeks to expose readers from the social sciences to current debates in their fields, beyond the discussions of induction and deduction one learns about in a typical research methods course. It provides glimpses of social science from its dawn in 17th century empiricism, through the rise of postpositivism and antipositivism, to the infamous “science wars” in the 1990s, and expresses a hope for a broader and more inclusive future. Specifically, the paper compares the traditional positivist method of scientific inquiry to a phenomenological approach, and attempts to demonstrate the relevance of philosophical investigation in social science research

Communication – the master key to the patient’s heart

Speaking style and behavior towards their patients. Special attention is drawn to two basic directions of modern communication in medicine and healthcare: 1. Verbal communication: • 1.1. The sociolinguistic factors of oral communication discourse between medical staff and patients. • 1.2. Key concepts for effective communication in medicine and healthcare. • 1.3. Effective communication strategies and skills in medicine and healthcare, professional speaking and listening in medicine – key principles, functions. • 1.4.Verbal tools and techniques. Language registers and style. Positive and negative language. Professional medical terminology and slang. 2. Non-verbal communication: 2.1.body language in medicine and healthcare: kinetic signs, posture, gesture, mimics. International standards. 2.2.Personality of modern medical professional. Appearance and behavior in medicine and public healthcare. The study draws the conclusion that the positive and appropriate verbal and non-verbal communication can have a beneficial effect on sick people and can prove to be the best cure for the patient’s heart

"Digital Sanctums of Empowerment": Exploring Community and Everyday Resilience Building Tactics in Online Professional Communities for Women

    Get PDF
Work and learning are essential facets of our existence, yet women have and may continue to face multiple restrictions that hinder and impede their professional outcomes. These restrictions are especially pronounced in the technical domains of Information technology and Computer science. This paper explores the power of informal online communities to act as collective shields of care in the context of professional development, especially for women. Using a mixed-methods comparative investigation of 400,268 conversational traces from three professional development communities on Reddit, we report resilience and communal empathy-building tactics, as well as calls for inclusivity and belongingness, which drive the collective identity of these online channels. The long-term goal of this work is to address the way in which such channels can be designed and curated to offer spaces for enrichment, empowerment, and advocacy with a focus on the professional development of women, especially those engaged in technical domains

Teaching neuroanatomical terminology in english as part of the language of medicine

    Get PDF
Neuroanatomy is the study of the structural organization of the nervous system. Its terminology is closely related to the origin and development of medical terminology. Understanding linguistic phenomena such as etymology, synonyms, antonyms, paronyms, acronyms etc. helps the students in achieving a higher medical competence. The specific terms could be distributed into several categories related to: 1. geometric objects (pyramid, uncus, fornix); 2. colours (red nucleus, white matter, gray matter); 3. skull structures (lacrimal nerve – lacrimal bone, mandibular nerve – mandible); 4. author name (Schwann cells, Broca area, Parkinson disease). Some terms in the english terminology preserve their original latin form (substantia nigra, corpus callosum) but others are modified (red nucleus, latin - nucleus ruber). This model of investigation may be applied to other medical disciplines

E-GAMES IN ACADEMIC TEACHING ON BULGARIAN AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE FOR MEDICAL PURPOSES

    Get PDF
The study presents new ideas for using e-games in programmed teaching of Bulgarian as a foreign language at a medical university. The working hypothesis proves the possibility of developing scientific competence through language teaching by e-games focused on medical terminology, anatomy and some of the main clinical disciplines. The authors have classified the types of e-games from a didactical point of view and have given some examples of successful tasks from their teaching practice

The Present and Future of Embryo Cryopreservation

    Get PDF
Embryo freezing technologies have widely been used in human IVF practice and in animal industry. In this chapter, we will review the development of embryo freezing technology and the application of the method, which will concentrate on discussion of the arguments in favor of and against freezing, as well as the latest results of success rates, comparing them with the other basic assisted reproductive technologies methods. Then, we will present our viewpoint for the future application of embryo freezing methods and their place in reproductive medicine. The analysis of facts and suggestions should enable researchers to rethink the position of cryobiology in reproductive medicine. It should be considered that the method of cryopreservation is not only a technology for storing embryos but also a method of embryo treatment that can potentially improve the success rates in infertile couples. There is also a theory that describes the “treatment” effect of freezing an embryo, which may explain the higher success rates of frozen embryo transfer (FET) compared to fresh embryo transfer (ET). The authors of the “Theory about the Embryo-Cryo treatment” believe that freezing and thawing could activate endogenous survival and repair mechanisms in preimplantation embryos

OVERALL BRAND DESIGN OF ELITE SPORTS NAUTICAL RESOURCES – ITS ROLE AND IMPORTANCE IN INCREASING AND AFFIRMING UNIVERSITY REPUTATION

    Get PDF
Each university affirms its reputation in society not only by its scientific and professional achievements but also by certain PR strategies built with the help of well-selected and graphically designed printed and media-based editions, advert messages and signs on billboards and other devices in the sphere of external advertising. The present study of the opportunities offered by nautical sports resources for advertising, popularizing and enhancing the university prestige is part of a theme elaborated in a dissertation. It is also part of building an overall PR strategy

Post-translational Modifications of Newly Synthesized Histones H3 and the Role of H3 K56 Acetylation on Chromatin Assembly in Mammalian Cells

    Get PDF
Thesis advisor: Anthony T. AnnunziatoThe project I am presenting aimed to: 1. Elucidate the pattern of post- translational modification on the different variants of newly synthesized histones H3 in mammalian cells; 2. Reveal whether the acetylation of residue K56 on newly synthesized H3 histones plays a role in the incorporation of the histone into chromatin in mammalian cells; and 3. Determine whether the acetylation of residue K56 on newly synthesized H3 histones plays a role in the incorporation of the histone specifically in replicating chromatin in mammalian cells. The experiments to answer these questions were performed using HEK293 cells with inducible expression of FLAG-histones, enabling us to control the synthesis of new histones of interest and to detect and analyze their presence and relative levels in the cells. The results suggest that the acetylation of lysine 56 on histone H3 may play a positive role in the incorporation of the histone into new chromatin, and lack of acetylation may be reducing the efficiency of incorporation compared to acetylated histones.Thesis (MS) — Boston College, 2010.Submitted to: Boston College. Features of representative design for academic needs – development of conceptual models when designing symbols and regalia

    Get PDF
Abstract. Authority symbols play a significant role in building the internal structure and representative function in the various governmental organizations and in particular - high schools and universities. There is a growing need of creating and implementing a clear methodology for designing academic signs based on a thorough analysis of principles in the design of the academic regalia in a real high school
