E-Preferred Approval Plans – Is This the Right Choice for an Academic Library?

    Get PDF
Texas A&M University (TAMU) Libraries implemented an e-preferred approval plan in early 2000s with the goal to achieve better oversight of monograph purchases, while responding to users’ increasing demands for library resources in both print and electronic formats. To determine the impact of the e-preferred approval plan on the library’s monograph collections, an evaluation of the print and e-books purchased from GOBI Library Solutions (formerly known as YBP) over a time span of six fiscal years was conducted. Acquisition, usage data and collection development profiles have been analyzed. Study results support evidence-based collection acquisition and management decisions of monographs in print and electronic formats. The results also inform whether e-books effectively support the TAMU research and curricula and to what extent hybrid print and electronic collections should co-exist to support diverse user information needs. Finally, this poster provides some suggestions for how librarians can evaluate and tweak approval plans to adequately supply the monograph titles needed by an academic community. The project is scalable to an academic library of any size: large, medium or small

Course Readings: How Libraries Provide Value

    Get PDF
This poster was presented at ALA 21015, the annual conference of the American Library Conference.Academic libraries are continually being asked to demonstrate their value. To do this, libraries analyze and assess their services and resources using a variety of tools and methods. A source of data that is overlooked in this analysis is the course syllabus and, more specifically, course readings. Purchasing these readings on their own would add an additional financial burden on students. Focusing on journal articles, the authors have analyzed syllabi to determine the cost savings students received based on library access to readings. Additionally, the authors searched the web to ascertain how many of the readings are freely available, legally or otherwise

IMPACT OF NON-FORMAL EDUCATION ON THE EFFICACY OF SCHOOL LEARNING

    Get PDF
The paper is presenting an attempt to visualise how out-of-school learning could be dealt with in the in-school system and if it could enhance the content required by formal education. Study aims and hypothesis are to highlight the impact of non-formal activities on learning results as well as the importance of linking non-formal to formal education and cognitive, attitudinal and affective aspects of non-formal learning. The question the research is posing refers to how closely related to learning outcomes is the choice of reframing school activities in a non-formal approach We run a psychosocial survey based on a questionnaire elaborated by us in compliance with validity and reliability criteria. The questionnaire aimed to identify teachers' opinion regarding the impact and the efficiency of non-formal activities on learning outcomes.

Seasonal Moulting in Deer Mice (Peromyscus maniculatus) in the Rocky Mountains, Alberta

We recorded seasonal moulting in North American Deer Mice (Peromyscus maniculatus) in the Kananaskis River valley, Alberta, Canada, to test the hypothesis that moulting is restricted to the times of year that do not overlap with other high-energy demands, such as reproduction (spring and summer), or with low nutrient availability (winter). Although a seasonal trend showing a peak in moulting in the post-breeding period provided support for our prediction, a low level of continuous moulting did occur throughout the year

Strategies for Developing Collections through Multiple Acquisition Models: Assessment and Benefits

    Get PDF
This presentation describes an assessment of the English language and literature monographs acquired by a large research library through multiple acquisition methods: Approval Plan, Demand Driven Acquisition (DDA) Program for ebooks, Purchase on Demand Program for print and ebooks, and subject librarian selections. The assessment focuses on answering this question: How close do approval plan and subject librarian selections match the materials requested by users? The usage of the English materials purchased prior to and after the implementation of the Purchase on Demand Program were compared by subject and topics using ILS circulation data and vendor reports. The assessment reveals areas of the approval plan profile that need to be changed to better align with users’ needs. Among benefits of using multiple acquisition methods to developing collections are significant cost savings to the library materials budget, improved library collections, and more efficient use of subject librarian’s time. This approach can serve as a model for any discipline and can be scaled to a variety of libraries regardless of their size and collection budget
